I've tried the red banana before and it's good. You can find them in American grocery stores once in a while but now I definitely need to see if I can find the blue Java banana!
I know someone whose mom tried her first banana on the ship from Italy to Canada after World War Two and thought it was horrible. Years later she discovered that she was supposed to peel it first.
If I did not have a latex allergy, this would be one of my fruits. Its great for smoothies! Also, goes well with cereal like Wheaties or Cheerios or something more local not in the United States. I can eat them, but they give me a stomach ache as if I ate dairy, just without the throat closing part.
I grew up with dwarf banana, prata banana, gold banana, apple banana and plantain. The Cavendish is by far my least favorite and one of the reasons I rarely eat bananas in the US.
There are about 600 varieties of banana worldwide. As I understand it, in India they refer to the Cavendish as "hotel bananas" because that is the only place you find them. This speaks to the variety of bananas in the local market. As to which banana will replace the Cavendish in the western market? I suspect it will be the Ladyfinger or Baby banana that is the best choice. Sweeter than Cavendish, but smaller, which may be appealing.
I said to the kid stocking bananas at the supermarket "Every time I come in here you're stocking bananas." He said "Yeah we sell more bananas than anything."
What made Cavendish the standard is that it ripens within period it takes to ship from Tropics to Temperate markets (about 2 weeks). So if that quality is inherent in the Blue Java and Red varietals, they would be candidates to replace the Cavendish. In the Philippines farm to market is only 2 days at most, so varieties we eat known locally as Lakatan, Latondan, and Señorita cannot be exported (they ripen w/in 3 days) so could never replace Cavendish. The time to ripen is the economic factor not discussed in the video. Thus if no replacement to Cavendish (w/ the ripen slow quality) is found only Tropically countries would enjoy cheap bananas in the future. Only airlifted bananas which would be expensive would be found in temperate markets.
So Rockefeller's goons shot down miner's children with machine guns? So what? Worship your masters! Do as you're told! Keep your mouth shut! Every company has people like this. They become managers and they're deeply hated.
Ice cream banana not being the one most countries purchase is very much a massive flaw in capitalism. I mean healthy fruit that tastes like ice cream?! That needs funding to be an American food. Plus, the red banana and blue banana skins alone are exciting but if they are both very tasty bwtter than current banana types why not make them at least a luxury store reality? 😮
You generously omit the video where two evangelical Christians declare the banana an "atheist's nightmare" because it's so perfectly suited to human consumption after 10,000 years of human cultivation. The same way God gave us the IKEA rocking chair.
I’ve been telling anyone who will listen about this crisis. They don’t care. They will when their precious fruits are gone. But by then it’ll be too late. Fungus will end the rein of the Cavendish. I’ve never had a gros michel like my grandparents. My descendants will have no bananas. But maybe the cost is too high. Perhaps these bananas, like the colonialism that supported their production, are doomed from the start, destined to cause only exploitation and misery. There’s better sources of potassium. Alas.
I never understood why the clothing company Banana Republic would choose that name. It has no positive connotations.
Thank you for exposing some harmful practices through this educational format
Both the red banana and blue java look amazing!
I NEED to try the blue and red banana ASAP!!

red is a bit of an acquired taste, since they're stickier texturally than what western people think of as bananas
Forgot to say - awesome video! Fun to watch and informative 😊
India has amazing bananas, differing from region to region. I found bananas with spines, big ones, little ones, all kinds, and all delicious.
Learned so much thank you

Lady Finger bananas are the best tasting, even if they are smaller. So much better for anything cooked like a pie or banana bread.
Yes, those are delicious.
lol 1:17 when someone asks for a banana for scale 😂

I really liked the banana split screen.

Love the Apple Banana, personally!
Manzano bananas for the win!
Because monocultures have historically worked out so very well...
Blue Velvet. Smooth, creamy, pale blue in color. A bit fibrous but if you can get past the texture, you're in for a treat.:)
Thank you
The blue java please!
To have the saba banana (fresh) available anywhere other than my home country would be wonderful.
"Intellectual property has the shelf life of a banana." - Bill Gates. 😋💛🍌🍌🍌🍌
How is not working better than a company building a town and gave them a way to earn money

Bananas are technically Berries
I have always thought that mangoes (or apples) are the most popular fruit. 🍎😀🥭
Geven a good idea❤

Trader Joe's should try them.

Pretty sure the mango is the most popular fruit globally.
For flavor, I agree, but for trade volume they’re way behind bananas, apples, oranges, tomatoes and watermelon

while gros michel are virtually extinct, they still exist here in few amounts of shrubs in our place.
