  • How to make Samurai Sandals. Step by step tutorial on how to make traditional rice straw samurai sandal called zori. Japanese straw sandals were the samurai's footwear of choice and are a great addition to any samurai cosplay or authentic costume armor. I'm touring around Japan building things and exploring samurai armor displays in museums. This Samurai Sandal Airbnb Experience was one of my favourite things to do in Tokyo and I would totally recommend doing it yourself. Join me for future build vides as we build samurai armour and other movie inspired props and costumes on our tour around Japan.

That's really interesting. I learned to make waraji (the more complex sandal you tried on at the beginning) during my middle school "ninja" phase back in the early 2000's, but I never managed to find resources on how to make proper zori back then. This video answers so many questions I had back then about how you're supposed to attached the thong portion to make it more "flip-flop" than "Chaco" lol

I love doing crafts now that I'm getting older in my hands are not as good as I used to be, like I'm doing small yarn work like crochet makes it hard on my hands but something like this with the cord which is bigger looks like it would be easier to do. Please would make great gifts for people for beach sandals.

Any full footage in more detail of how to make the Zori sandal?
Because all the others are only in Japanese, this is the only video with English but it’s not full and doesn’t show you step by step how to make Zori...

Here's a good guide similar to how I learned to make waraji: the fancier type with the more complex lacing that he tried on earlier in the video:
      commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Waraji_sandals_instructions.jpg
To make a pair of zori (the simple flip-flop variant they actually made in the video), follow the picture until step #6 in the linked photo, and then just follow Drawbridge Prop's video to attach the straps and finish the sole.
Overall either sandal design is very simple: make two loops, and then take a "weft" rope and weave it over-under until you have a sole as long as you want. (As seen in the linked guide.) Once you've made the sole as long as you want, trim the weft cord (the "under-over" cord) and tuck the remaining portion along the warp part, (The cord serving as the frame for the weft cord) and then follow the video from hereon out: pull the warp cord until all the slack is gone, and tie/weave those loose ends into the sandal as well.

there was also plate armour that existed for feet. And ones with fur (better for winter)

Samurai would have worn the flipflops outside of battle during peacetime.
