Exactly what I wanted. I have an old cloth eyepatch from ages ago from an eye injury. The elastic wore out so I said "I'll add a sturdy strap to it some day." Well I've started playing with leather and found the eye patch and said "maybe I should just make leather eyepatches to sell" and here I am. Looking at your video. And now I just have to design my own actual design so I don't get into trouble and Bob is not my uncle, he may be yours though.
I might never make this bc I don't have some of the materials but this video was great! Thank you!
Thank you from Australia, I enjoyed the eyepatch video and will make them in a craft session at work (a small library in a small town). Maybe for talk like a pirate day
Glad you enjoyed it!!
This is a great tutorial thank you, now to convert this to horse size 😅
well i have some leather and a injured eye, so i guess might at least try to make one
pretty cool! I wish I had the tools to make one, I'm blind on my right eye.
Now for a more general comment. Been buying custom made eye patches for awhile now and they are the most comfortable. The metal rivets tho, not sure those would be comfortable wearing for 16 hours, they may dig in. Going to try making my own now thanks for the vid. I always wondered how they shaped the patch. 10 yrs ago the 1st guy actually had me make a plaster mold of my left side so he could shape the patch to my eye socket, but he got good enough shaping the leather that he no longer needed that. Also wondered how he sealed the edges, now I know, so kool. Subscribed and now will join to get the pattern. Also, one more and I will shut up, I’ll use different dies to match my different clothes so I can be color coordinated, lol. Do not wear it much, but I have a dark blue suit I always wanted to match my patch to, and tooling like a good ‘fk off’ on the matching patch will surprise some folks - again, lol. I have a black one now with white lettering now, ‘SYLO’
Glad the video helped! Thanks for subscribing and please post pictures on Facebook or Instagram when you get some completed.
It's the collagen in the Kangaroo Lace.
Every animal has a unique way their skin produces collagen.
Once its tanned into leather the collagen determines how the leather stretches or not.
Kangaroo hide has a very tight collagen matrix.
Which makes it very tough stuff.
I had no idea. Thanks for that Ryan!
can I post this video on the canadian leather crafters group or is that considered spam?
@@DrawbridgeProps beat you to it.
Post it to the SCA group as well please!
Ryan McEwen this is really useful info. The strap is really important, I will make sure I get that.
That is most likely a Hollywood story. I never heard of this until a year or two ago, and I consider myself to be alright with sailor history. If this was true, it wouldn't have been just pirates or sailor's, but a lot of people who have similar scenarios outside the deep blue pond
OMG! You just saved Halloween! ;)
Also, I got lotsa kangaroo lace. Hahahaha!
Pirate props coming up? :D No but seriosly, its lookng great!
You never know what I'm going to be building next.
Awsome! ha ha!
Thanks for always leaving a comment! Hope you had a great week.
Like this idea. Going to use the laser to put "eyes" on the front (lizard, or demonic) then finish them that way. Nice vid.
love a laser etched leather project!!
Daniel Kingsley laser? Please elaborate? Eyes on patches are so normal, everybody says that.... Maybe a dragon eye, but be more creative. I hear pirate jokes all day long, butt I tell people I like to be more creative than, ‘where’s your parrot?’. That’s how I got the roadname ‘DeadEye’. Years ago, like 20, I took some Miami Dolphins fabric and glued it to a normal over the counter eye patch once, that was hit every where I went, but especially at the stadium....
Let's see you in an eye patch with the beard beads!!!
I would like to buy some
Do you oil the patch after? How long does the shape last after it's formed? I'd like to add white to the top of the black color can I add alcohol white paint as well? Thanks
They can be oiled but it’s not necessary. The shape lasts forever in less you try to flatten it with something heavy. Paint after dye, before waxing.

It's true! Often times eyepatches were simply for better vision during the night/dark places in the ship! NIGHT VISION!
I can at least confirm that it works. When going from the bright outside to a dark inside having one eye used to the dark already helps you to see in the dark.
The military in general uses similar techniques, infantry at night when flares pop, ships crews going out on watch at night, etc
How long did you leave the steel wool in the vinegar for the stain you made?
24 hours minimum. But I leave it forever. I have vinagroon that I mixed up years ago that still works.
Please I could get the templates
I rather like the one David Morrissey wore on The Walking Dead.
His is a pretty cool patch!
😎🖤👌
Masamune date eye patch style
hope people with blinded eyes can proudly wear EYE PATCH. Medical should be made out of EYE PATCH in people with impaired eyes wear it looks very BEST.
Thank you for your amazing video tutorials. I’m from Philippines and I lost my right eye during my work in Iraq and I’m using an eye patch on glasses. It’s irritating to wear everyday. Does the eye patch available on your website is ready to wear or the pattern only for making it? And last can I pay it through Western Union? Thanks and godbless
This is very cool. Do you feel the rivet against your face with the rivet setup? I'm looking for a good pattern for my friend who went blind in one eye (but can still see some light that confuses his brain) & I want it to be comfortable. I don't have any leather this thick so I'm wondering if it can be done with thinner leather in multiple layers?
Thinner leather with layers is a great idea.
I just bought a nice white bone color eye patch.... I had the front half of my eye removed at 19. Is it ok to paint it w acrylic paint?? Like paint a design on it?? I kinda already started...
It depends on the finish but I would just do it. Worst that could happen with acrylics is that it will run off and you’ll have to do it again.
Where I can buy from your Etsy account, can you give link??

Ok your beard is fabulous...thanks great video...talented & humble... rare...😊😊😊

Thank you kindly!
I heard the same story, or they used the covered eye at night for better vision.
Supposedly the navy seals still employ this technique.
I need one of your black biker patches for my right eye. Just recently had an eye injury and it needs to be covered. The patches I've found look to medical and make me look sick. I want to look cool. How do I find your store?? Right eye, black with smooth strapping.
I can send one out to you right away! Hope your eye heals soon!

Hello :) do you think these designs would be comfortable to be used on a daily basis? I’m 25 with a glass eye/prosthetic (right eye) and I was thinking on switching to an eye patch. Sadly the standard ones where I live (New Zealand) are just these terrible medical ones.
Thank you very much for the video and the suggestions for tools and materials required! Very very interesting. Subscribed!
PS your videography/editing is such high quality dude! Seriously, awesome!
Hey Jared! Thanks for the kind words. I would think the style that sits up on your eyebrow would be slightly better than the small ones that sit inside the eye socket. I would imagine like anything, you would end up with a couple of different patches for different occasions. I would also consider a smooth lining leather glued on the black if you’re going to wear them a lot.
Drawbridge Props & Armoury thank you so much! I really appreciate the guidance :)
Same ...! And this problem has greatly affected my life and my thoughts and I am looking for a solution
This story is true. Special forces using the same trick
Nice!! Thanks for the confirmation.
No way would anyone go w/o any depth perception for any time just to see in the dark. I have one usable eye and wear eye patches every day of my life and no depth perception while working with my hands is difficult. Imagine if you will being on a rolling and rocking ship and choosing to give up depth perception so you can go into a dark hold.... special forces, lol....
It's pretty cool. Mythbusters tested it. Unfortunately I can't recall which episode.
@@garydavisson2691 this is a true story. it started as a british navel policy that got carried onto pirate ships. and it does work.
Pirates would also wear an eye patch for protection from the flash of the black powder from the muskeett
Del McRea I have been wearing custom made eye patches like the one he said over the eyebrow w/o rivets for years and they are the most comfortable of any I have worn since 1981. Like u say, it was life transforming for me to find a comfortable stylish one vs the over the counter ones I’ve bought. When working and sweating, I use the cheap ones, but even during break I find myself slipping on the leather ones. Now I plan on making my own thanks to the vid and patterns. I will use different color dies too, and man the fun I can have with the tooling and sayings.. like NYB - none yer business, lol....
having a problem finding your eye patch pattern please help

Drawbridge Props & Armoury thank you!
I lost my eye, I have no other choice, it looks better than the medical fabric ones
I lost my left eye November 2021 to a freak accident. How can I order a patch from you? Thank You
Yeah I really want to make an eye patch.......yawn
sorry?
Make something betterer
I wish I could show you any of the things that came out of the workshop in last month.... but sadly you will have to wait for them on tv. Prop and costumes building for Legends of Tomorrow, Charmed, Omens (working title), Upside Down Magic, and The Order. And that was just in the last 4 weeks. Unfortunately my film clients are very private about their upcoming projects. I'll try to make something better for you soon.
come on man! your betterer than this! Stop holding out on us
