In the first episode especially, they really lean into the comic book looking style of people with the square, Superman like jaws and character poses and positioning in scenes. In the second episode there is some of that too, but after that, they go full-on "Dexter's Lab" art style.
I loved the character design on all those villains. You basically knew exactly what they were about before they even spoke. Dexter's Lab excelled like few other shows in translating the personalities of their cast into their final designs. Great stuff.
@@ItsTheGooseItsTheGoose yes! Her blank body gave me that same uncanny valley apprehension as the aliens in Are You Afraid of the Dark, the one with the faceless aliens pretending to run a toy factory. (Tale of the 13th Floor)
Something about the shape of a body without any of the features is off-putting for sure. The "Are You Afraid of the Dark" that always got me was the Crimson Clown. No thanks!
This was one of the things that made these Cartoon Network shows so great. They had their star attraction, then were like, let's make other shows in here as well. I Am Weasel was so successful that it became its own spin-off.
They should’ve kept these around in the later seasons. I don’t get why they pretty much got rid of them after season one. Three Dexter episodes is way too much for me. Making Dexter’s Lab without Justice Friends and Monkey is like making Pink Panther without Ant and the Aardvark and Inspector Closeau or making Rocky and Bullwinkle without Mr. Peabody and Dudley Do-Right.
It was a shame they ended up getting phased out rather quickly it seemed. I would have loved to have seen some new "Monkey" and "Justice Friends" adventures. Seeing them crossover with Dexter was always a fun treat though!
Yeah, there were only a handful of Justice Friends episodes in Season 2, and only one Dial M for Monkey episode, "Peltra". Shame. It was fun seeing them all come together in Last But Not Beast, even though... you know... 😭
And of course, Monkey's gibberish monkey noises are provided by the legendary and unequaled Frank Welker, pretty much redoing the vocal performance he gave Abu in Disney's Aladdin films and animated TV series. Dial M for Monkey actually got quite a few legendary voice actors and notable personalities on its cast, from Randy "Macho Man" Savage as Raslor to Maurice LaMarche (doing a slightly altered version of his Brain voice from Animaniacs/Pinky and the Brain) as Simion.
(7:30-8:08) I totally agree with what you said about, Simion. I also wish he showed up more & he's my favorite character (Oh, and he looks pretty good in Just his yellow underwear)
Great video my friend! Dude I love both shows!! I also wanted to share Rob Paulson roles on these great side shows! He plays Major Glory, The Silver Spooner with Barbequer( don't ask😂) and my personal fave SAM--MUU--AIII!!!!!! Also, the Wolverine like head mounted on the hunters wall, was probably meant to be Hanna Barbara's other super hero, Bird Man! btw any chance we'll talk about the Cusalagoopagoop? Didi's Imaginary friend?😂
The amount of voice talent in the show spread across so many characters is ridiculous! And it wouldn't surprise me on bit if it was indeed Birdman! I originally had the video to include Dee Dee's imaginary friend and Action Hank, maybe I'll make a follow up including them sometime, but at the very least we'll talk about them in the next live chat. (Sam-R-I was also my favorite!)
6:08 I'd like to mention he also appeared in Samurai Jack as a Cameo.
I wasn't aware of that one! For some reason that crossover makes too much sense.
It's fitting that Dexter's Lab was made by Hanna-Barbera, because Dial M For Monkey looks exactly like an action show from their Space Ghost era

Very true! Although I have to say I was surprised by the "twist" regarding Peltra at the end of that episode. It was honestly kind of creepy!

Mental Mouse was my favorite of them. That opening scene of Can't Nap where he's got Valhallen beaten made a big impression on me as a kid.

You forgot to mention that major glory is a nephew of uncle sam
That is a true fact that he is!

Thank you for explaining the word Infraggable. This has plagued me for years.
It had bothered me ever since I first heard it. I am finally at peace with its definition unless an official one comes out.

Am I a bit off for thinking "Monkey" would actually benefit from a tongue-in- cheek, "gritty" live-action reboot?
I didn't know that bonesaw from Sam Rami's Spider-Man (2002) himself Randy Savage voiced rasslor.
The man himself!

He has so much story telling potential. A series about him growing and developing his powers would be awesome!
Holy shit i was hooked watching this (im 35) shame you’re such a small channel i was expecting 100k you’ll be there soon 🔥
Much appreciated! Got something super fun planned for the next video on March 10th aka Mario Day, so stay tuned!
