Rent control is not really the answer many studies in other countries show once the government starts rent control the amount of people willing to rent houses/ landlords stop purchasing housing and it lowers the inventory in the market in places like Argentina that’s what the have done and now they have a thriving housing and rent situation, I think your second option of affordable housing is a better option plus it will cause landlords to have some competition and then rent prices will drop as other landlords will fight to attract tenants

Aside from the fact that rent control was actually eliminated under the previous 1990's Mike Harris Conservative government, no subsequent government fixed that, and Ford doubled down by eliminating the annual rent control guideline for units built and occupied after 2018 - there are a host of other issues when it comes to trying to end homelessness. When he says "if you are unhealthy, we will take care of you" he is completely ignoring the concurrent disorders and mental health challenges faced by many persons that are chronically unhoused - these are serious issues that need intensive and ongoing funding and it isn't happening.

There should be no encampments; if our federal government and the media had not pushed ideology, we would not have shelters filled to overcapacity with people; but instead, we have them attacking anyone who dares speak to what some of the problem is. All businesses and companies in Canada need to treat employees better, and pay more. No one wants to work 45+ hours a week, and after pay you can barely afford food.
So they bring in foreign workers, who work for half the amount and no benefits, who then take the jobs from the Canadians who want better.
    Make it make sense. 🤷‍♂️

@DeltaH-9 That's how economies work... that's why our economy is falling apart. Back when the economy boomed through 1940-1990, people made alot more money than they do now, because money went further because it was worth more technically.
As time has gone by businesses, employers haven't adjusted what they are paying employees. But inflation continues and the amount employees make has become less and less in the face of rising costs.
This is how inflation works, man... this is how the economy becomes this bad. The employees aren't getting a big enough slice of the pie to return the money back into the system in a large enough amount to profit all these companies. So companies are raising prices because they are selling less product, because young people don't make enough money to return large amounts back into the system... feeding the companies selling the products.

@DeltaH-9 That's a ridiculous ask for a generation put into massive debts through school debts and costs of living being insane. Most young people these days are near 15, 000 to 20 000 in debt by the end of going to school. And with that much debt, you think anyone who doesn't get a fair wage can ever escape that sort of debt?
So basically, you're saying generations of people can't have a decent living wage because they didn't find an amazing job after school? And those people deserve to never make it out of debts? Because there aren't enough decent paying jobs out there?
Yeah, think about it... and you might understand why it seems like American and Canadians don't want to work. Because they can't make enough in Canada at an average job to make a decent living.
So instead of treating Canadians better... the government goes, "OH, since you feel that way well, just forget all our young Canadians that are in debt and need jobs... and we'll gove them to foreigners to do for half the wages and no benefits."

    • @kyloren3693
      @kyloren3693 Месяц назад +2

@DeltaH-9 Yeah, adjusting all wages to the economy as inflation happens and the dollar falls and rises, is a nuts concept right? And giving people reasonable living wages is just insane right? Lol funny stance man.
That's exactly the attitude that's gotten us here.
Meanwhile minimum wage workers get replaced with robots/self serve operations, they get terrible wages, they struggle to afford food, and you wonder why entire generations are saying... naw were good... we'd rather watch the economy grind itself down while we wait for better. 🤷‍♂️
Your attitude definitely isn't going to encourage young students in massive debts to flock to job sites, for their minimum wage, which you admit is subhuman.... 🤷‍♂️

I'm sure the premier, who's had a silver spoon in his mouth his entire life, knows all there is to know about the difficulties of being at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder. For a start, he might consider how his own brother would have ended up without his privileged start in life. We all know people in our lives that would be in big, big trouble if they didn't have huge support from their families and friends behind them. Anyone with a learning disability, a physical disability, a drinking problem... so many are a slight change in circumstance away from being absolutely fucked and far away in life.
The more we get squeezed, the more of us drop off the map and become homeless. It's not rocket science. Why anyone would think Ford would be on top of this issue is beyond me. He'll do nothing but use it for sound bytes like the above, and then complain later when nothing changes.

You know what's interesting is that there are homeless people that do have jobs...
Yes... they just can't find a place to live with the existing barriers... No affordable housing availability, ridiculous prices for rent, (even in very tiny accommodations and rough neighborhoods,) very few people would choose to live in tents in Canada. Winter, it's a thing and it's very cold out there.
Also, no one in their right mind is going to have their children living in tents if there were options.
The tunnel vision of entitlement. 🤦

I would love to see these mystery employers who do not require a home address on the application, will overlook a person's state of appearance at the interview due to lack of water and facilities for hygiene, who will overlook days off during the first few weeks of employment before they receive pay for the person whose tent and belongings are stolen while at this miraculous 'new job' forcing them to have to seek emergency shelter in the interim or sleep rough on the street. Even if they get an interview with no address on the application (unlikely), past the interview where they are disadvantaged by hygiene/ professional appearance etc. , and by some miracle get hired? We have folk working several jobs who still cannot pay rent and even if they do? Have to get their food from Food banks. THIS SITUATION WAS CREATED BY A FORD GOVERNMENT. One that wants to give you beer in corner stores while people - even working people- struggle to pay rent and get food. He has not put rent control back, no purpose built affordable rentals. He is not just ignorant, he is evil. Out of touch failure of a human being and Premier. Shameful.

He's going to take care of the unhealthy? Then why are they living 50% + under the poverty line? Living in slums, relying on food banks & rescued food that they wait 2-4 hours in line outdoors regardless of weather conditions to acquire. Electricity that they can't afford, essentials of living are out of reach, soap, shoes, clothing, hair maintenance all unaffordable. Vitamins & essential supplements not possible. Being out in public & socializing is full of anxiety and shame because of their lack of financial support. This applies to Disabled & Seniors as well. All of this perpetuates illness and exacerbates the disability because the person CANNOT work. Disability is not a choice, in Ontario its a sentence to life of misery and shame.

Has he found many homeless that are healthy? If you are homeless there is stress and depression at the very least! Him making such statements helps drive it, because he encourage resentment, hate or bias to the public. Lowering the self esteem of someone homeless, struggling, is going to cause more struggle to overcome. There is also other possible factors when facing homelessness ( its not just about lazy or physical ability) such as addiction, mental health, lack of AFFORDABLE housing set to an individual making minimum wage (because thats what is meant affordable) Also, getting and maintaining a job does have requirements as well that clearly he hasn't considered. What an immature perspective he has as the leader of Ontario. I guess him thinking booze and no rent increase limits were a good idea tied into this perspective he has. Wonder if he heard that alot growing up " your lazy, get a job"

I think an investigation into why are they homeless are in order ? Unless he knows something we don't, then it's important to find out the why and how people are homeless in the greatest country in the world. Rent for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment shouldn’t be more than $1000. Most people don't even make that on ODSP or welfare. Getting a job, yes, would help, but most don't pay over $30 a hr, and yes, that's basically what you need to live in ontario now. It's not all Ford's fault. it's the federal government with high payroll tax and carbon tax. The government needs to do better.
