- Does you dog really love you? According to Marc Bekoff, cognitive ethologist and author, dogs most likely think and feel similarly to humans. However, not all dogs will automatically show you their love and affection.

Following is a transcript of the video:
Your dog is the best. You go on long walks together, cuddle up on the couch, and enjoy sloppy kisses. You really love that pup. But … is there any way to know if your dog loves you back?
Well, first let’s address the bigger question: does your dog love anything? Can your dog love?
Marc Bekoff: “I think we can, in many ways, apply the same criteria to dogs as we do to human animals.”
Marc Bekoff spent a lifetime understanding animal minds. From coyotes and wolves to domestic dogs like yours, and he says that dogs probably think and feel similar to humans.
Marc Bekoff: “A lot of new research on neuroimaging using functional magnetic resonance imaging- fMRI’s, is showing that the same parts of dog brains and human brains light up when for example, they’re feeling jealous.”
So the difference between how your dog feels joy, and other emotions, and how you experience them, might be like the difference between you and another human. So dogs can likely experience what we’d think of as loving relationships and studies show that dogs are pretty good at building relationships with us, too.
One study found that dog brains are highly adapted to recognizing human faces and interpreting our social cues. So, maybe that’s how your dog always knows when you had a bad day.
But are those puppy dog eyes just for you or is your dog only pretending to love you for food?
Marc Bekoff: “That, I think, is really ridiculous. Are there dogs who use people for certain things? I’m sure there are, just like there are some people who use people for certain things. But i don’t think that would characterize the overall nature of dog-human relationships.”
So yes, your dog can love you!
But just because they can doesn’t automatically mean they do.
Marc Bekoff: “To say that they’re unconditional lovers is just ridiculous. Each dog is a unique individual and it’s not one-size-fits-all. Even the most brutally abused dogs I’ve met who took months to get them to even make eye contact with me have the capacity to love. But there’s just very good reasons why they don’t. In order for you to feel the love, you have to earn that trust.”
And like everything worth having in life, that trust will take time and work. But it can be done.
Marc Bekoff: “It’s sometimes just telling them they’re a good dog when they’ve done nothing. I did a study about the frequency with which people say no, stop that, versus “good dog.”
And, don’t worry, you’ll know once you’ve gotten to that special point in your relationship.
Marc Bekoff: “Do they follow you around, do they just hang out with you, not only when you’re feeding them or walking them. Do they seek you out? When you’re not there, is it clear that they miss you?
Oh yeah, that’s one happy dog. So can your dog love you? Absolutely.
Does your dog love you? Well, that’s on you.

Dude, you ask if dogs can love as a philosophical question. Philosophers still debate whether humans truly feel love.
I love my dog the way I love the rest of my blood related family, and I feel the same connection from my dog, I know she loves me as well as everyone else in my family, my parents, my siblings and my grandma. She greets me when I come home from a long day, I kneel down and she jumps onto my shoulders to give me a big hug and some kisses, and she's very selective of who she gives affection too, obviously she gives the same attention to my other family members but the same can't be said about other visitors, she often growls and gets aggressive towards complete strangers, she does that to protect us, and I can only assume she does that because she cares and loves us enough to have the instinct to protect us. She follows me around the house, she always wants to be where most of the family is, people who say dogs can't love must be out of their minds. Dogs are born to be good creatures, they deserve just as much love as they give, and then more. I know no one will probably care enough to read this, but I love my dog so much I just can't help but express how much I truly love her.
I read that and i agree wif you
My dog loves everybody and will jump in any car.
Muh Russian Bot they clearly show emotion, they show happiness, sadness, fear, tenseness, why wouldn’t they be able to feel love either?

Filip Omeljaniuk are you sure your dog doesn’t just love food?
I feel like if you've ever had a pet Dog, cat or even a rat, you know these creatures are capable of what we consider high level emotions. I wouldn't say the same of something like a Hamster or a fish, but I've never had them as pets. My brother's fish seem to recognize him, they won't come to me unless I have food, but will swim toward him. I used to have pet rats and they had personalities, showed fear and happiness, friendliness and sadness. It wasn't me projecting my feelings unto them, and even if it was just them reacting to me or the people around them, that shows they can read and react a accurately to emotion, they have empathy. Yes, rats do laugh when you rub their bellies. A well trained rat is a palmed sized dog (without the genetic deformities of a...palm sized dog)
Tasty Treats *my dog licks my feet when I get out the shower*
Eww, you got a Pettigrew as a pet? YUCK.
I actually had a betta who was very personable! He would swim around to get our attention and look at us all the time when we would talk to him. Maybe he just wanted to be fed but I always thought he loved us. Rest in peace, my lil fitzy

Well, my betta fish is quite the character. He follows me (or my hand to

NMGTOW Morpheus: No dogs, no heaven.
But no heaven anyway. So you're right, but not for the reason I think you think.
MGTOW Morpheus: right, that's what I thought you thought. It's scriptural. It's a religious thing. But in my opinion, a heaven without at least some dogs wouldn't be a heaven worth being in.
AND, there isn't any heaven, anyway.
But the video isn't about dogs in heaven, it's about dogs here on earth loving or not loving their owners, so it's beside the point of this video to go into religion. Have a good week!
MGTOW Morpheus: not a dog-lover, I see. Never known the love of a good dog. Oh, well, we can't all be lucky. And as for other people's dogs, I agree with you. Mine do all those things, too, but just like parents MAY love their own children's green boogers, I love my dogs and their foibles. I assume they love me in return. But I know not everyone loves dogs.
Have a good week.
MGTOW Morpheus: being a dog lover generally doesn't mean you're into bestiality...which is having sex with an animal--and which the animal can't really consent to...I don't advocate bestiality! Maybe one of the things you object to is "neoteny," the retention of juvenile tgraits into adulthood? Where people make "babies" out of their dogs?
Purse dogs and dogs that always wear clothes because their owners think it's cute? Talking baby talk to dogs, not making them mind but putting up with nasty little doggy habits because the owners think they're so darling? I'd have to agree with that. Though I'm not agains the occasional Halloween or parade costume--for people or dogs. Or warm coat when it's too cold out for little short-haired dogs.
Wolves are cool, but they're probably not really great pets. They're very strong, for one thing, and one quick bite can really do damage to a person...and they tend to know what they want and not want to accept something or someone weaker than they are as a leader. They don't obey well, and they can sometimes outthink a person. Hard work to keep a wolf around. They don't bark like dogs, and I love their howls. Especially on a misty, early morning...
Admiring them from afar, great. Keeping them in the wild without trying to kill them off, fine. Respecting them, yes.
When my dog was 14 1/2 and I was 24 I realized her arthritis was really really bad and she was losing control of her bladder what I couldn't/refused to see hit me
She will be dead soon
I sat down really sad and started crying I've had this dog since I was 10 and despite having no food to offer my dog walked to me as fast as she could and put her head on my knee THAT IS LOVE PEOPLE

😀
Seems to be an obsolete question in the present day?
They've spent 30,000 years learning how to love humans. I think they've become quite good at it!
Muh Russian Bot the clocest thing to love is respect. A dog is nothing like you. People have unrealistic expectations over animals which is why so many dogs die every year. Those are the people who get a bite in the face for kissing their dog and then it gets euthanized
@Muh Russian Bot ,I've told people I love them without actually loving them ....so I guess that doesn't mean much, you can convey love quite a few different ways....verbal is probably the least genuine way
Derek Scanlan research proves dogs evolved less than that amount. Fossils date back to 1500 years. That’s not that long ago. Dogs have not been around with us long enough.
Also that’s too many years. It’s less than that.
I love him and he loves me
I leave for 5 mins to the grocery store and when I come back he greets me as if we haven't seen each other for years, hugs, wet kisses and he nibbling on my ear which tickles and makes me laugh. Such a good pooch (my first dog too, by the way)
Omg I literally thought my dog only liked me for treats and toys. I’m so glad I watched this because my dog does follow me and miss me sometimes. Yay!!
I am so sorry you're brainwashed your dog only tolerate you because you are free shelter food and masseuse your dog will not follow you if you stop giving it free stuff
I know my dog loves me. At night before bed, I usually read. My girl dog will jump up on the couch and curl up next to me, let out a very loud breath and fall fast asleep.
Yesterday i saw a street puppy that was left by his mom. I adopted him and since then without me he starts crying.
Lol i think i'm aging in reverse. As I get older i find myself treating animals more like other people and have strong opinions of those who don't. 😢

It's the cutest and most heart warming thing I've ever seen. He knows I'm not home but he'll sit in front of the window. He just sits there relaxing and looking around and enjoying the weather.
He doesn't have seperation anxiety and has never had it(he's 11 years old). It's like his way of being with me when I'm not home. I seriously love my dog lol.
The fact that this video was in my recommendations almost gave me a heart attack, I don't think I could function normally if my dog didn't love me back.
Dogs are heavenly!
It doesn't matter what science says. I feel my dogs love. That's it. Period.
I wish I could show this to a "therapist" I once had who kept insisitng that my pets didn't care about anyone but themselves.
Dogs will be attached to anyone that provides food, shelter, etc. It’s not rocket science to know that they get excited to see you only because it signifies that positive aspects of the animals life. You represent food and protection.

I saw this expert on 60 mins. It went into the study more. I'm glad that he did this study. 🐕 Dog's Rule 👏👏👏👏
Yes they do. Dogs are highly social creatures. "Love" is an evolutionary mechanism to an extent to create social bonds and dogs exhibit all the characteristics of loving their pack. owner, etc. even beyond "they give me food".
@@jonathanr72 That is empirically not true. Not everything that dogs do is directly related to their social hierarchy. The heavy focus on "alphas" in dog packs is somewhat misinterpreted. They have alphas but most of the time (in wolf pack-where this behavior is documented) the alpha is the familial head in a sense (the father) and they definitely do care for their offspring. It is virtually undeniable that dogs form bonds with humans. This isn't an emotional point. There are several studies on this.

clockwork gamma sigh
25 thousand people a year are killed by mans best friend
Dogs can't feel regret and remorse, so technically humans feel empathy on a whole other level
Erik Carias Why the sigh? We can all agree that’s it far easier to get a dog, an animal made by/for humans, to love you than a person because humans are far more complex when it comes to our likes/dislikes/emotions.

Is it just me or does anyone think about if dogs have a name for us?
U know cause we have a name for our dogs but do our dogs have a name for us?
:o
I’d like to think that all animals name humans that they have a certain relationship with. I’d also like to think that the names they’d give us would be certain sounds they make since they can’t speak languages (yet). Dolphins name each other with certain sounds.
Some parrots actually name us so maybe
My dog knows that if my family says " go get your mom" that means he's supposed to find me, so I like to think he calls me mom.
What I'm sure of is that my pupper is certainly capable of love because sometimes when I or my family greet him after a long day he will pee himself out of excitement (he's still a puppy)! No human is ever that excited to see me, let me tell you 😂😂😂 my pup is too pure for this world!

This video goes into describing how dogs can behave around people and how they can grow bonds with them. It even goes into explaining that dogs have similar neurological processes as humans when they feel emotions. Despite how descriptive it may be, one of the biggest flaws about this video is the lack of a description for what love really is.
So it begs the question, what is love?

Cats are generally selfish creatures that put themselves and their own needs ahead of their owners. Dogs on the other hand are the exact opposite, they put their owners over themselves and will gladly do anything to please their owner, even sacrifice their own life to save their owner if need be. So I think dogs are more capable of truly loving their owner.

Whenever I visit my mom, the dogs all climb over me for a while. And when I even think of getting up to leave, all of the dogs go ballistic with howling and barking. They know when I'm getting up to leave before I'm actually up. I have never fed them myself, so it's not that they would recognize me as the one who provides food. I think they see me as part of the pack who is out most of the time, and they know that when I leave, it will be a long time before they see me again.
