  • In this video I look at some common beginner table tennis mistakes.
    These include:
    - Holding the bat too tight
    - Standing too close to the table
    - Standing with right foot too far forward
    - Big follow-through
    - Reaching for balls
    In the video I demonstrate the mistakes, explain why they need fixing and show you what you should do instead. So if you are a beginner player, this video is for you…

    I've been playing since I was 12... but these tips are always a refresher. We all tend to get lazy as we get older unless we stay fit. So, getting back to these basics helps to ensure we don't drop our game as we age.

      That's so true. I will say, I try not to let age stop me. I do plyometrics to increase leg and core strength when I am off of the table.

    I've been playing for 3 years and still tend to stay too close to the table, specially after serving. The loose grip is huge as it helped me get rid of chronic shoulder pain on top of enhancing my feel for the ball as you mentioned. Awesome advice.

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  6 лет назад +6

      Thanks Alexis. I have been told by a couple of coaches that I have a 'distance problem', i.e. I play too close to the table sometimes. This is something I am working on too. For the serve, try to include a step back into the service motion. So you serve and just after you contact the ball, you step back straight away. This should get you into a better position.

    Very informative and doable tips. I am from Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan and during this COVID-19 lock down, I am coaching my nieces. I have played squash and was captain of my university team. Table tennis is by far the best game you can play at home under such unpresidented circumstances. Your online lessons have improved our game a lot. Thanks

    Experience teaches you not to make any of these mistakes. At least that´s how I learned. But instead of waiting for experience to kick in and correct your own mistakes, Tom breaks it down for you in 10 minutes, so you can become a much better player the next day, rather than next year. Thank you Tom!

    I add a mistake for beginners, hitting the ball only by their arm without turning waist, the power of hitting ball is from legs.

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  6 лет назад +38

      Well it depends what shot you are playing. Some shots (e.g. FH topspin) need a good twist and transfer of weight / power from the legs. For other shots, like blocking or quick counter-hitting close to the table, you don't need really need to twist. You can play these with mainly forearm and wrist.

    Wow, I never realized how much I reach! I’m a very new player and have been playing for maybe a month and found some of your advice pretty helpful, especially the reaching part!

    • @JinJeonFitnesss
      @JinJeonFitnesss 4 года назад

      The reaching part is a big deal! The stroke should only be initiated once you have moved your feet into position. Anticipate > move feet to ball > stroke. Most people do the following: get anxious > lean/reach for the ball > get off balance > make a weak shot.
