  • This video shows how to use an astrolabe to take a sighting of the sun, and determine the local time and true north using the sighting. You can make your own astrolabe, too! The astrolabes I show in the video are laser cut using the files at

      Great! Thanks. By the way, laser cutting plans mentioned in description also work on paper. You can have students print them out and pin them together.

    Ancient people were so smart to invent and use things like this, without calculators or mathematical notation or accurate astronomical models

    • @michaelkuzelka8903
      @michaelkuzelka8903 7 месяцев назад

      This WAS the calculator and mathematical notation and accurate astronomical model. So yeah, they already had that. They didn't make this WITHOUT those things. They made this WITH those things. They had to have those things first, before they could build this.

    Love your video, wish you could the same but with a medieval planisphere.
    Thought your lining up to the sun was very clear. Not sure whether it would have been really used to tell the time, would have been easier to do that by observing the Sun's direction and how high it was in the sky and the season.Much easier. But the other 1000 uses, as this was used to serve astrology.
