  • Made primarily from photos, video clips and interviews all found on the Internet, many only recently available, "Anthology Zero: The Beatles at their Best" provides viewers with the opportunity to meet The Beatles at the time that John Lennon says they were at their best.
"We were at our best when we were playing in the dance halls of Liverpool and Hamburg. The world never saw that." - John Lennon
The Best family home gave birth to The Beatles and Pete Best's "Atom Beat" became the new Liverpool sound. When Pete joined the Beatles, they were a bum band nobody wanted. A year later they were the #1 band in two different cities in two different countries. They had released a single recorded in Hamburg Germany and on the second anniversary of the group, were recording their British debut, "Love Me Do". They were already well on their way to superstardom and Pete Best was the most popular member of the group.
The summer of 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of The Beatles decision to replace original drummer Pete Best with Ringo Starr during the recording of "Love Me Do", the Fab Four's first hit record. It is also the 50th anniversary of the closing of the legendary Casbah Coffee Club. The Casbah was the launching pad of The Beatles and the entire Merseybeat sound, events that forever changed the world.
"I think it's a good idea to let people know about The Casbah. They know about The Cavern, they know about some of those things, but The Casbah was the place where all that started." - Paul McCartney
To commemorate these anniversaries, the critically acclaimed short film The Beatles at their Best, best documentary winner at the 2011 New England Underground Film Festival, made its final festival showing this June 23, 2012 at the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival and now is offered free to the public via RUclips.
When it is finally finished, it will be more than a film. It will be an index movie. Viewers will be able to watch it and then 'click' on it at anytime to be redirected to the source material it contains. A full crediting of all of the content will be made available at www.TheUltimateTrip.net. You can help by sending information to Press@TheUltimateTrip.net.
"The Beatles at their Best" is the true story you've probably never heard about the group you thought you knew everything about!!!
    Enjoy!

Since 1964 I have never heard anyone say that the Beatles were overrated. Actually, the exception to that might be John Lennon himself in an interview. In an interview that the Beatles were just a band that made it very big. Wow it’s true that they were a band that made it very big there was a lot more going on and just that and he knew it. There were only four people who did not experience Beatlemania the way the rest of the world did so I can understand that they might have a different perspective, but that’s the closest I’ve ever come to hearing anything about overrated. I don’t know where you got such an idea.

It was great being a young kid when the Beatles changed Rock and Roll forever. When they had 14 songs on the billboard charts at one time you got a Beatles song every 15 minutes on the radio. Then England sent us about a dozen more great bands. The 60s rocked.... I was 14 years old when they ruled the world of music, and NY in 1964. Fast forward to 2019..., there's a Beatles CD in my car waiting for me to turn the key. When the Beatles broke up, Pink Floyd filled in for them. Yes it was good to be a kid back then.

I have always thought Ringo’s drumming was unique and spot on. He had great timing that was just as important as anything else in the band. The Beatles really needed Ringo, especially when they got into the more psychedelic style. He was right there binding everything together with unconventional percussions. Any drummer can do 4/4 blues and rock and roll. They went beyond that. You know it’s perfect when it all just blends together seamlessly and no one part sticks out except an intentional lead. They did that so well.

Years ago, I worked for the Ambulance service in Liverpool, we were taking home a patient who just happened to be Bob Wooler. He would have been well into his late 60's at that time, he lived in the Sefton Park area of south Liverpool and was talking about his time at the 'Cavern'. He very much regretted not taking up the offer of management for the Beatles to the point of having 'Mugs' produced with the logo 'I gave away the Beatles' (or something to that manner).
Another time, we were transporting a very elderly lady home to Woolton village, so I'm sitting there all quite and muttered something about Mendips, as we past on Menlove ave. And she piped up nonchalantly: "Oh that's Mrs Smith's old house".
    Me: "Yer wha'?"
Her: "Mrs. Smith, my friend lived there years ago with her husband and nephew John".
Me:"You knew John Lennon's, Aunt Mimi?"
Her: 'Yes, of course, I remember him too!"
She went on to describe him as a "nice boy" and tell both my partner Debbie (Ambulance crew) and I about the Woolton fete, when John met Paul for the first time. She didn't really remember much about the music being played, as she was busy selling home made cakes at a stand. My response to her was: "You were there when history was being made! You need to record this information on tape for future generations".
Both Debbie and I, were totally gobsmacked, we wanted to chat longer with her, but duty called and off we went....
On a more personal note, as a child we were told that a branch of our family (on my Grandad's side) had once owned a music shop and were told it was located "over the water" in Birkenhead. I found out a number of years ago from my Dad and Uncle, that it wasn't located in Birkenhead, but in Walton road, Liverpool. What's this got to do with anything I hear you ask? Well that Music shop, just happened to be 'North End Music Shop' (they sold musical instruments), also known as N.E.M.S. in later years by the new owners. My Great, great Grandparents sold the business to a local Jewish family by the name of Epstein. And the rest is history...

It's good to hear Lennons comments in here about only having best in the band because they were desperate and needed a drummer so they could go to Hamburg, and his comment about wanting to dump Pete as soon as they came back.
Pete considers himself closest to John, yet neither made any attempt to speak to each other after he was booted, Pete was obviously very traumatised by everything, this pain he carried for many years, as a failed artist desperate for some kind of recognition right up until his attempted suicide in 1965.
He was paid when he was in the band and did very well out of them becoming famous, without there fame he would not be a wealthy man now, so I guess he's offering some gratitude through gritted teeth.

I've always felt sorry for what happened to Pete, and the lousy way they ditched him on the eve of what turned out to be incredible success. But you only have to listen to Pete's drumming on that first recording of "Love Me Do" to realize they made the right decision by switching to Ringo, who also had the perfect personality for the band. Still, I'm glad Pete finally got some money through the ANTHOLOGY 1 release -- seems only fair.

I can't say wow what a surprise, but knowing the music industry, we weren't there and we don't know first hand the ego clashing, were hearing things third and fourth hand how many years later... i played, worked in studios, toured with a lot of acts mixing the mains, i know from experience, the members who wrote the music and lyrics recorded with studio musicians and then hired musicians to tour with them, problems came out of the wood work when they would do what ever they could to outshine the original band members, not staying with the theme or even trying to play as a constructive band member, they decided they were better. the bands would only end up having to hire a new back up band after the tour.
I'm sure it was a heart break for Pete and it worked on his confidence and he was left with no closure and that can be unnerving and create a lot of mental duress, but after all these years his name is still alive, I'm sure the few million he received from the sales of anthology 1 is no consolation to the experience he would of much preferred, but it's a couple million and in truth, any one of a billion things could have happen! one thing we know, Pete Best is 72 alive doing well making on his own.
Paul McCartney sure has had his share of ups and Downs, Paul has proven himself still to this day 'along with his awesome band', Paul is what I call A Singers Singer I've already beat Lyme disease and cancer, Paul will always be my inspiration, to try. John and George, they touched us all! and Ringo, he's still doing what Ringo does best. and we all collectively can leave the past where it is and give peace a chance. to the future everyone, Cheers!.

I've been drumming 46 yrs. and I've been in many bands, since 1970, I believe the Beatles would have been as successful with Pete or Ringo because of the writing of "Lennon and McCartney", I've sit in many bands over the years, I will say "Ringo had his own feel ", and that matters in writing songs, as a drummer that grew up to "Ringos" style, and feel", he put into the "Beatles" that no other drummer could have. Every drummer has their feel, and I don't think anybody could have put in what "Ringo did", he helped me as a young drummer of 12 yrs.old, in 1970, to be the best drummer I could have become. Ever since I became a Beatles fan(DEC, 1980-after John's death), I have been somewhat intrigued by this part of Beatles history. There have been many documentaries, movies, this has even been discussed around college campuses around the country(as a class)talking about why Pete Best was fired, released, sacked, let go, etc. My opinion was he never really fit in. As much as I love Ringo, he was the right fit at the right time. He was in the right place at the right time as well. When the Beatles were in Hamburg the 1st time(AUG-NOV, 1960), George befriended Ringo and would invite him over to watch them perform after he finished performing with Rory Storm and The Hurricanes. Sometimes Pete wouldn't show up and the Beatles would ask Ringo to stand in for them(on rare occasions Paul would play the drums). When they changed their hairstyles to mop tops, Pete turned it down, to me, that was a sign that he wasn't going to fit in anyway. Whether or not he was better than Ringo, I'm indifferent to it. Ringo was a "perfect" replacement and was a better technical and studio drummer, he was obviously good enough because when George Martin asked for another drummer during the "Love Me Do" sessions, they didn't hesitate to ask for Ringo.

  • @Cosmo-Kramer

Here's what a contemporary drummer of Pete's said when he was asked in an interview what he thought of Pete's drumming: *"He was a genius. You could sit Pete Best on a drum kit and ask him to play for 19 hours and he'd put his head down and do it. He'd drum like a dream with real style and stamina all night long, and that really was The Beatles' sound, forget the guitars. At their Decca audition, Pete had so much power that the engineers didn't know how to record him. That’s why so many Merseyside discs are icky, all thin and weedy, because so few engineers knew how to do it. I was amazed when The Beatles replaced Pete. I even thought about learning guitar so he could be the drummer in my band. John, Paul and George didn't hate Pete Best, but they didn't want to be outshone by their drummer. Ringo was a good drummer but he was more ordinary."* -- Chris Curtis, drummer for The Searchers, a great Liverpool band who scored a 1964 Top 3 Hit in the US charts with their classic, "Love Potion # 9". Chris saw Pete Best play many times in both Hamburg and Liverpool during Pete's two years as The Beatles' drummer.

Ah...the lads...the changed popular culture, worldwide. They changed the music industry, songs weren't written in the Brill Building as much anymore, then recorded by someone else. They introduced the "singer/songwriter" phenom...James Taylor, Carole King, Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens, Elton John...and the Beatles changed the definition of Rock & Roll, no longer just R&B-based, Chuck Berry covers. Rock was any song performed by a rock band. It was as simple as that. The Who didn't have to ape James Brown anymore. They could just be The Who.
John: The cool one. The smart-ass. That great voice. Claimed he was "a rocker" at heart, but Paul could have Rocked him under the table from day one. Composer? John more or less had one song form (This Boy, No Reply, etc.)...and few cha-cha-cha numbers. His few few solo albums were classics...but something went wrong. Not unlike Clapton, when Lennon cleaned up from heroin, he had lost his spark. He & Nilsson (who auditioned to replace Paul) became drinking buddies.
Paul: The only one with enough talent to front a second super group for the next decade. In fact, even if the Beatles had never existed, Paul might have become the Elvis from the UK? Almost Mozart for the 20th Century. He learned at the feet of George Martin (whom was mostly responsible for the impeccable arrangements Beatles tunes evolved into); could play many instruments. Most importantly, without Paul the lads would have had very little traction with my parents' generation. Michelle. Yesterday. When my folks bought me my first album, Sgt. Peppers, I knew they'd come around to respecting the Beatles. Did Paul write some dreck? You bet! But with hundreds of diamonds, what's a few zircons?
George: When Harrison died I was dismayed at the few inadequate tributes offered. George and his Chet-style guitar playing (not unlike Steve Howe of YES many years later) could cover ANY rock & roll tune, note for note...a big deal in those days. He was the one "in charge" of the BBC's "Pop-Go-The-Beatles" radio show, which popularized the lads in the UK, and showed they could not only cover other tunes, but could make them their own. George's idea of melody was...unusual, and he was not the composer Lennon & McCartney were...but anyone who could pen Something was no slouch. And his All Things Must pass album may have been the most impressive post-Beatles solo work.
Ringo: Perhaps the luckiest human being in the 20th Century? Pete Best was "the handsome one" in the Cavern Club days, but Ringo was a rock solid drummer, with a charming baritone voice...and the rings & the nose...who imparted some vulnerability & humanity to these larger than life icons.
But few give credit where credit was due. Talent, coolness notwithstanding, the Beatles would have died on the vine if not for Brian Epstein's insight & foresight. Maybe he was queer on John? Maybe he was hurt when the lads outgrew his management style? But he cleaned up the lads and made them presentable to the world at large.

Some are missing the point here.
    Ringo didn’t need to be
    Billy Cobham, or Buddy Rich.
    What made Ringo great,
is that he created the kind of patterns which fit the songs
    Paul and John were writing-
    Perfectly.
Ringo evolved past the pedestrian early rock ‘n’ roll covers the lads were doing
    right along with them
    Therefore he was

It's an interesting story but if you've been involved with bands you know that this kind of stuff happens all the time. Bands break up, they get new musicians, they have issues amongst themselves. There's jealousy, egos. These guys were young. They were working pretty hard. Nothing was so malicious or unusual. It's a shame that Best has a bit of an attitude about it. Maybe his melancholy nature (see Letterman show) was not conducive to working well with the other guys. He's a least making some money from having been associated with them at one time.

So true. Keeping a band together is an art unto itself. George was a teenager on the first Hamburg trip. They were actually ordered to leave when the German authorities found out. I never liked Best making it personal by blaming it on jealousyby the others. That was actually his mother's excuse. She was not happy to lose her house band to real clubs. There was so much h lateral moment by musicians in the late 60s into the 70s, that if Pete had any value as a drummer, somebody of note would have used him. Never happened. That's not the Fab Four's fault.

At the time the Beatles began playing those covers, the original '50s rock and roll in the USA was passe'. The Beatles revived it by performing those songs with more energy and verve than the original artists had. The Beatles were also attractive and were clever and funny, and that's what endeared them to the fans over any other artists. They were kind of a four-headed Elvis.

As to the question of did Best get a Raw Deal?Hell no He got to be part of history and eventually made a few million bucks. the dynamic between a rhythm and Lead section in a band is solely held together by the drummer. PB did not keep good time. his metering is off on everything I've ever heard with him playing. The Beatles are beyond iconic. They are an institution. Anyway.. What he really cared about, was that people said,he was fired for not playing right.

This is the best retrospective I've seen on this band's history. It should be noted that part of getting Ringo to play drums properly on the "Please Please Me" session was for George Martin to arrange drum lessons for Ringo Starr, as reported in Mersey Beat, fall of '62. It is my private theory that the flip side is either Pete's supposedly "lost" recording from June '62... of "Ask Me Why" ... or one last time that Alan White filled in... simply because Ringo did not have Pete's light touch, as demonstrated in that nasty, brash version of "Ask Me Why" at The Starr Club in December '62, while Pete's playing (which was imitated on the official release, if it is not Pete playing)... was perfect in the song on his mid-62 BBC appearance, which most of us have heard. Ringo was not a slick player who could handle a light beat that "Ask Me Why" called for. It's that simple, and the Starr Club tape, which came later than the EMI recording of "Ask Me Why" proves that. Months later, after his lessons, yes, Ringo was cutting the song fine on BBC.

George Martin was in it to make a name for himself He didn't think Pete Best OR Ringo were good enough to use at the sessions. Ringo was NOT up to playing as good as what we hear on "Ask Me Why". The Starr Club tapes which were recorded AFTER the studio version of "Ask Me Why" reveal that Ringo was just banging his way through that song as if it was a Punk tune. I didn't doctor those tapes. It is what it is,. So what part is the joke?

If that was true, The Pacemaker's drummer, Gerry;'s brother would not have been asked to replace Pete Best before Ringo was asked. If you can read... read Gerry Marsden's book, "Never Walk Alone"... then decide who's the fool.

    • @CastleOfThoughts
      @CastleOfThoughts 8 лет назад

Strawberry7Lynn No. Before Best was sacked. They could not sack Pete without having a new drummer who agreed to jump into Pete's spot. They were a working band. Gerry Marsden goes into this in his book. He says in his book the whole idea to get to #1 was by destroying the competition. Ringo's band was The Beatles fiercest competition and it was crippled after The Beatles stole Ringo from it and that band soon faded into oblivion. Gerry's brother was wise not to allow The Beatles to screw Pete by destroying his band who were also fierce competitors with The Beatles. How? Drummers were very hard to come by. But they had to let Pete go due to personal problems. So the plan was to kill the competition while solving their own band problem. Gerry was there. He should know.

@Steve Shortridge YES - more than grain of truth there. IF you love John you definitely have to accept that truth about him. He just as. I always found Paul to be Mr PR conscious and George to be mostly much more considered and nuanced in what he chose to say. He knew he was something of a side man in the big scheme of things and so it wouldn't do to make a major faux pas and have to have the others or Brian clean it up for him. regardless of his spiritual views, I doubt George would ever have been so impulsive to have uttered those immortal words to a reporter about the Beatles being bigger than Jesus. George was a smart and hard-working guy and he just was never that dumb, nor full of himself to spout from the cuff like John sometimes did. But when John was on - boy, was he on. Whipsmart, scathing and funny one minute and seemingly either vulnerable or prophetic the next. A grade r'n'roll voice and beautiful writer of heartfelt ballads like This Boy, If I Fell, Julia, AtU and Because. A complex and almost split down the middle who left some real really extraordinary songs, But then they all did really.

Paul and John would not have tolerated an average talent. Greats know greats.

There are many versions but sifting through the information and stories here's how it came about as far as I'm concerned, being an authority on all things Beatles.
Pete had been the drummer for 2 years, was an integral part of the initial sound, created his own stamp of percussion and did the whole Hamburg residencies and the Northern circuit of shows as they made their name and then the Cavern residency.
However back to Hamburg, when Ringo occasionally played with the John, Paul & George for fun whilst he was on his own residency with Rory Storm and The Hurricanes, they all sensed and instinctively knew he was the glue that was yet to be set, but Ringo had his own gigs and for now with Pete they WERE The Beatles.
Fast Forward to getting the Parlaphone record contract and producer George Martin it appears said by all means use Pete on the road but we need someone more professional for the recordings meaning a session drummer. George Harrison for a time had been championing Ringo as a replacement (they had become firm friends) and now this was the moment, remember that although it was a fairly democratic band, John was the boss, and what he said went.
They all sensed what they already knew that Ringo was the final piece of the jigsaw but he was currently doing a season at Butlins with Rory Storm and although they had established themselves and had a recording contract in the bag it was no means a done deal with Ringo as he was very established himself with a good set up and was considered one of the best drummers in the Liverpool scene and beyond, and quite a name in his own right.
With this suggestion by George Martin then set a chain of events in motion and so the approaches began with even John Paul & George all personally going to see Ringo in person at Minehead where he was working to convince him this was the right deal for all of them.
Once agreed they left the face to face firing to their manager Brian Epstein.
Yes, they were cowards for not doing it themselves, but these were young men in their early twenties, making it up as they went, and that's what managers are there for, to do and make the hard decisions. To be fair to Epstein, he did do his best to keep Pete Best in work through his own company but such was the momentum of The Beatles and his other projects like Gerry Marsden & The Pacemakers and Cilla Black that Pete soon fell by the wayside.
John said years later they bastards for the way they treated Pete and said though The Beatles had to be the biggest bastards of all to accomplish what they did besides having God given talent.
Remember this is all fine with hindsight. The Beatles could have had some initial success but could have faltered early on though no fault of their own, they may never have broken big and
just had a few hit singles and then faded back into obscurity.
I think it was great that years later that Pete got some final financial reward from The first Anthology album. Apparently Paul did call him (the first time since his firing) and said do you want to have a slice it's there if you want it and of course Pete happily accepted.
It's all part of music history now and Pete just played one part as they made their way to world success and as John said years later, It wasn't so much that Ringo wasn't a better drummer it was just that Ringo was a better Beatle and perhaps that's the real answer.

Everything's taken out of context here to make Pete Best look as if he had a bigger part of the beatles history than he did.
Pete's effort in Beatles history is negligible .Mona Best is the person who comes into The Beatles history in a significant way.She pawn all her jewellery and
sold most of her items in 1954 to raise cash to back a horse called Never say die ridden by a then famous 18year old called Lester Piggott in The Epsom derby.
The horse was 33/1 and won that day watched by the Queen Elizabeth II.
Mona Best used the money to buy a very large house and later opened the cellar of the house as a music club called The Casbah.
Mona encouraged young lads in Liverpool groups the play at her club. The Beatles played many times at the Casbah and Mona introduced the Beatles to Pete(her son)
when The Beatles needed a drummer for Hamburg.Later after Pete was sacked Mona Best still supported the Liverpool groups including The Beatles.
Mona accepted her son Pete's sacking but Pete held his anger against The Beatles for decades even after he became a millionaire after The Anthology was released.
Remember there was no guarantee of success for The Beatles when George Martin signed then same as there was no guarantee that mona's horse 'never say die'
would have won the espom derby that day under the ride of lester piggott. The more I listen to Pete the more I agree with the Georges Martins decision
to sack Pete Best and have him replaced with someone else.Pete Best's path in life was already set out for him and his part in The Beatles was never meant to be.

@@tedmacj7z I think you've alluded here what some seem to be missing. A great, or even an adequate gigging drummer is not the same as a great recording drummer. Some drummers have a great feel and can hold it all together on stage but they lack the technical skills to create truly great tracks that will last the test of time - like a house. the foundation IS important. so essentially Pete had the look and could play adequately for the small-time club scene - but once they had what they really really wanted (and needed) to go to the top - a recording contract! - he was gone. The technicians and the Beatles themselves came to accept the inevitable - Pete was not up to snuff in the studio. They opted not to fake it with Alan White - they wanted to be true, not a fake outfit. Good choice. If Ringo had troubles during the White Album, imagine how long PB would have lasted if he'd only played live and did to actually play on any of the studio work. Untenable - and NEVER going to be the best band in the world. Can you imagine the Stones without Charlie, the Eagles without Don H, or the Band without Levon Helm. As for the early Who...? Led Zep? Need I go on!
The right drummer is critical especially in terms of a break-through original sound think Clem from Blondie, and think the Police, though that excellent drummer pretty much broke that band up as he just couldn't/wouldn't sit under Sting. Stew C didn't exactly go on to set the world on fire in a new band. The only one who has really done that from the drum chair to stardom as a band leader - well there are actually two, aren't there? Phil Collins and Mr Foo Fighter. Well done, lads.

So if Pete was so magnificent, why didn't he become a phenomenon instead of just a footnote?

Pete Best did finally make some money from recordings he played on which were released on the 'Anthology' album. It's interesting to compare the three versions of 'Love me do'. You have one with Andy White on drums and Ringo on tambourine, one with Ringo, and one with Pete. It's hard to compare Ringo and Pete. Ringos drumming got so much better and complex as the years went on and there are so few Pete Best recordings to make a fair judgement.

The last line of the video is John saying ‘we became efficient recording artists’. 😂

1:29 - who knew both John and Paul had nightclub ceiling decoration skills in their youth.

I'm glad Pete finally got paid.
