I first heard this song just weeks after I turned 24 years old, and it's amazing how the lyrics hit me right in the feels. I'm now a month from turning 32 and I'm happy to say that I'm FINALLY marrying the woman of my dreams in March 2017!
About 10 years ago, I was not in a very good place. Long story short: it was not a very good time for me to get into a relationship. But I met someone. Even though I knew within days of meeting him that he was the person I should be with, I thought I should push him away because it was such crappy timing. Then I sat and really, truly listened to this song, and these lyrics just struck me: "You'll sit alone forever if you wait for the right time / What are you hoping for? / I'm here and now I'm ready, holding on tight." What was I hoping for, indeed? I was hoping for him. I had always been hoping for him, even before I met him. 10 years later, we are very happily married with two beautiful kids. There are so many JEW songs that have resonated with me over the years, but none of them mean as much to me as this one.
I totally hear everything you've said about this song. Ten years ago, I also wasn't in a good place and I basically had this song on repeat (I was only 20/21 at the time, so I wasn't even 23 yet), but it gave me the motivation I needed to get up every day, to shower, to do what I had to do, and then to try again the next day. Eventually, I climbed out and got away, but this song made a lot of that possible. It's funny how music can do that to someone, but it can. It really can.
I remember listening to this when I was 16 or 17. The lyrics were pretty meaningful for me at that time of my life. I still think they're pretty awesome to this day. It also made me think "damn, It'll be a long time until I'm 23. Wonder what it'll be like". welp, I'm 26 now. Crazy how fast time goes. It's strange actually. Since i turned 23, time just seemed to hit fast forward.
I'm 28, Not to rehash what everyone has probably told you... It seriously feels like each year speeds up incrementally. Value and cherish every moment.
They played this last night in Lowell, MA. The only reason I bought the tickets and sat through Paramore. I loved Dear and the Headlights though. Such a good night.
This song is so emotional, it effects me so much and I dont know why, I seem to be listening to it a lot recently and each time it blows me away. Truly one of the greatest songs to be released in the last decade.
I love the way he shows so much passion in his voice, many singers lose that playing live everytime iv seen them live he blows me away just with the fact he cares so much and as if hes playing it for you individually at the show
The most emotion put into a song live i've ever seen. I caught these at Leeds Fest, Donnington Download, Give it a name and the Academy and everytime it's blown me away. Jimmy Eat World have to be the most underated band EVER. Sublime
Haha! You can see Zach's lips at 5:11 right when he hits the snare two times, he says bum bum or something. I love this band! Say what you want about live performances, there's so much personality in this. They put on the best show I've ever been to.
The sweat, the ferocity, the emotion, the delivery, the pure intensity & soul Jim puts into this is really gut-wrenching. This is my favourite song of all the songs I've ever heard.
i love that he still delivers the lyrics with such feeling. some artists lose that touch wen they play a huge venue. .. merrr im dying to see jimmy eat world live already!
this song makes me choke up every time. and he sings with such raw emotion in this particular version. a truely incredible song, and an amazing performance of it.
this song will always mean so much to me from its strong emotive guitar lines and ominous but pain stricken lyrics today something horrible happened and this song was the only thing i could sing even the fucking lyrics were just like lit up signs in my head
My favorite band. Only band I would see more than once for a new CD release. Saw them 4x when Futures came out. Saw them 2x for CTL. If it wasn't for finals, I would do anything to get those Kroq night 2 tickets.
Coming back from time to time, and summoning old and sweet memories from 18 years old Barcelona travel. Memories of friendship, love and good times. I can't say anything else than THANK YOU.
23 is an absolute masterpiece, and JEW are the greatest on Earth. The show in Milan I went to was a real surprise, i didn't think they'd be that amazing people. I talked with everyone, got signs, photos, setlist. Jimmy Eat World for life.
I saw JEW about 7 years ago when they were relatively "unknown" here,(Australia). They played a small pub venue, I was up front...so clsoe that Jim spat and sweated all me. By far the best gig I have ever been to. I think a lot gets lost in big venue. Too bad ill never get to see them like the good old days again - but the memories will last a lifetime!
Let me spill on Zak Lind (drummer). Zak is everything a modern rock drummer should be. He's not flashy or adds extra solos. He's what every rock band needs...a SOLID drummer that's not gonna showboat, but give an amazing performance every time. Every time I see Zak play on RUclips or live he just keeps it real. Young drummers need to study Zak and how he plays. Remember, sometimes you need to remind yourself what's more important: a great performance for your band or your own agenda.
Year 2020: this song is still in my playlist. The lyrics of this song have always touched me in so many ways. This even helped me in my decision to get married. Bottomline: this will be my most fave song of JEW but then again all of their songs are sooooo timeless..
this concert made me start listening to Jimmy Eat World. five years down the road, I'm pretty happy I saw them that day. amazing band. can't wait to see them again in November!
Got to meet and hang out with the members of JEW last winter. Super chill dudes. One of the most exhilarating shows I've ever been too. 40 Watt Athens.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SONG!! It is by far the best Jimmy Eat World song. Powerful, epic, beautiful!! I can't get enough of it. I melt everytime I hear it. These guys are amazing.

How did that come out?
Never gets old
Timeless song, only problem with this song is that it eventually ends lol.
But it is always here for when you want another round!

One of the most intense songs ever. He must have really loved someone to write a song this great. It really breaks me down:'(
This song... breaks me every time I hear it. Incredibly cathartic.
This song helped get me over my first real break up that I took terribly.
What happened? Did you meet someone better?
They played this tonight in Atlantic City... they totally blew minds. People were shouting 23 between every song then after a short pause... it began.
Remember listening to this song when I was 18... I'll be 26 tomorrow.
Remember listening this song when I was 23, now Im 31 and still love it the same... One of my fav songs of all times
How the hell did they manage to create such an awesome song?? HOW?! Best song ever. EVER.
Still one of the best recordings of "23" I have heard, if not THE best.
I remember listening to this when I was 16 or 17. The lyrics were pretty meaningful for me at that time of my life. I still think they're pretty awesome to this day. I turned 33 yesterday. I want to start a band again. Growing old is a mindset, keep doing fun shit, keep making money. do what you love.
This is the most beautiful I have ever heard!
One Tree Hill brought me here.
2024 baby! Still can't get enough
first heard that song in 2008..i was wondering how life would be with 23...time passes by. Im 23 now..
Favorite Jimmy Eat World song hands down!
I first heard this song in the early hours of my 23rd birthday. That was almost a month ago, and I can't stop listening to 23.
The different riff was awesome! If I could get a band to do a cover of this song, I would play the alternate riff at the end like they did here.
I never did put that band together, unfortunately.
They played this last night in Lowell, MA. The only reason I bought the tickets and sat through Paramore. I loved Dear and the Headlights though. Such a good night.
I just turned 23 today. I love this song so much :)
Now 37 😵💫

its hard to think of any band that have more passion in their music than jimmy at times like this. with one of their greatest songs. long live jimmy.
