As were tracks. It focussed the mind to have 22 tracks as a practical maximum on most projects. If you had the money, you could get around 44 tracks max but it was more than twice as complex to do that, given we had to get two machines lined up and often patched if the studio you worked in didn’t have two machines in the studio as standard. Where I worked we had a floating A-800 for those who could afford the time and equipment to use more than the one machine.
As I mentioned on your Tears For Fears Linndrum video, it would be great to see a tutorial on the compressor and reverb that you’re using. Great video again!
To this day, I consider Rebel Yell one of the best sounding albums ever made. Forsey created a masterpiece. My favorite part of this song was always the claps. Thanks for this video 🙏❤️
I've learned more about the linn drum from this channel (embryonic as it is!) Than i learned from endless interviews with Rodger, & almost all drum machine videos on RUclips! Thanks man!
Excellent series! Would love to see a future video on any of the songs from Def Leppard’s Pyromania album. All of the drums were Linn with the exception of some of the cymbals.
It is kind of ironic, that this heavy drum machine utilisation was for the last album from _before_ Allen’s accident and made him want to consider quitting the band. whilst almost immediately after his accident, he became fully onboard and a deeply committed band member.
Great channel liking the linn drum ,really into 80s electronic music . Steve hillage album for to next and not or is full of linn drum sound . Brilliant cd
Please continue with these. So great and so well done. Any of U2’s stuff would be deeply appreciated. I know there isn’t much for them but some of the work with Eno (or other stuff) would be great.
The Linn drum is so bad ass.. I F$&cking love this song. My favorite Idol track. Steve nails it on the bass and guitar. The lyrical content is also very solid. Nice breakdown on the drum track. 👌🏼
The best drum machine ever. Just an idea,I always loved how powerful the drums in the Sisters of Mercy Album-Floodland where they used mostly the Yamaha RX-5 Maybe for a later episode but I do understand it might not appeal to a broader audience. Or even if you have one ?
This could well be an excellent series of videos. Straightforward info with no unnecessary fluff. One thing I would ask is that could you please add the tempo to the info you flash on the screen re the processing? Excellent work, keep it up.

You Spin Me Round by Dead or Alive, please! The kick and hi-hat is a Linndrum, clap is a Oberheim DMX, cowbell is a Fairlight CMI, but the source of the snare sound is a mystery.
0:52 : as a frenchman, i can say your french prononciation is quite good (and likely better than my english skills 😅) ! And in fact, i really enjoyed both of your two videos so far... i love drummachines (my dearest wish is to have a Oberheim DMX/DX one day), and you give a good ligtht about some littles things who make a drum pattern sound so much good (like the reverb on a Linn). I hope someday you will make some videos about some Oberheim DMX drums patterns, because i think it is so interesting to dive into the songs who used alternative eproms (electric snare, congas, etc.) or complex arrangement (like the songs produced by Leon Sylvers III or David Frank). 😊 Thumbs up mate, i will definitively coming back on your channel ! 👍🏻
You can't be serious. The way he pronounced Yeux wasn't even close. I'm not native French and I cringed very hard. Look, I'm not about calling out someone on his/her bad pronunciation but let's not give compliments for crappy examples either. That's very deceptive to others.
Love these videos!.. subscribed tarzana, california... Linn Drum Santa Clara, califronia ... Sequential Circuits now we are quickly moving to the new Ai oscillator .. thanks to Santa Clara.. Nvidia
Ah, brilliant! I started recreating that song a couple months back. I love the vibe of the song. I now know I need too change my hihat pattern! Thanks! Love these videos, btw!
I'd love to hear you cover any iteration of Doktor Avalanche from the Sisters of Mercy! First and Last and Always has some of the best drum machine beats ever imo
@@CVsoundlabs The entire "Control" album is insane, the song "Black Cat" - cant go wrong with any of her stuff really. So loo forward to further videos!
Thank you for the video, it's awesome! I always wondered about the sound of two artists: Thompson twins albums "quick step & sidekick" & "into the gap", and Paul hardcastle's "19". I'd love to watch videos cover for both. Thanks (:
Rebel Yell album is great, but not all the drums were from the Linndrum as had some of it played with a live kit on it played by Thommy Price! Have you ever seen him live on stage??

I didn't realize just how easy Roger Linn made the Linn Drum to program. Very cool, indeed! I'd love to know if those samples are available for purchase anywhere... including the Digi Drums and other samples made for the Linn Drum? Thanks for these great videos. I had a friend who worked for Leon Russell as a recording engineer while Roger Linn was designing the prototype... apparently the first prototype was an epic failure, but from that Roger knew exactly what he'd missed and came back with a winner. I also once worked with Roger Nichols who told me that both he and Roger Linn took a machine code programming class with one another, both with the idea of building drum machines. Whoda thunk? Cheers!
Here's one: The 1984 game show 'Scrabble" theme. I have no idea what machine they're using though some people speculate it's either a Linn or Oberheim. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Great channel - keep it up!
The only drum machine I’ve ever owned is the TR-707. It’s not on too many hits, but it is pretty important to INXS’s “need you tonight.” That would be a good one to cover!
What I love about 80s songs was the effectiveness and efficiency, the simplicity , cause studio time was a real commodity..
Uh…commodity means precisely the opposite of scarcity.
what i love about the 80s was the absence of the internet and dumb people giving their dumb opinions
As were tracks. It focussed the mind to have 22 tracks as a practical maximum on most projects. @@anditgoesanditgoesThere were plenty of dumb opinions, believe me.
No they spent a ton of money on studios. And there was an entire ecosystem devoted to doing so.
Stevens' explanation to how he came up with the chord progression is worth the price of admission alone!
As I mentioned on your Tears For Fears Linndrum video, it would be great to see a tutorial on the compressor and reverb that you’re using. Great video again!
I must've listened to this haunting song a thousand times during the lock down.
Simply mesmerising
That was awesome. The Linn Drum is such an iconic part of the sound of so many hits.

Indeed, just watched this and the TfF video. Fantastic historical work.

Very cool. Loved Billy and Steve as an 80’s kid, I wondered about the drums/drummer and back then the magazines didn’t talk about that.
Thank you! New episode will be out next week.
Excellent series! Would love to see a future video on any of the songs from Def Leppard’s Pyromania album. All of the drums were Linn with the exception of some of the cymbals.
I remember reading Mike Shipley talking about drums on "Pyromania" being a Fairlight with samples they made. Cymbals were played acoustic.
It is kind of ironic, that this heavy drum machine utilisation was for the last album from _before_ Allen’s accident and made him want to consider quitting the band. whilst almost immediately after his accident, he became fully onboard and a deeply committed band member.
I owned a LM2. This makes me miss it badly. BUT---Behringer should be releasing their Linndrum 2 clone very soon. I can't freakin wait!!! 😄
