    Party cohesion broke down during my most recent session when I heard possibly the only sentence worse than "It's what my character would do." That was, "It's what my character would do when he's drunk." Who would have thought a drinking contest against an adult green dragon (that the party won, by the way) would have any negative consequences?

      This is how I asked my group to create their characters. They were a bunch of first timers, so as their DM I needed to put it into terms they could understand. They are all former Warcraft players, so they just ended up making their characters into dnd characters. The party comp was human fighter (human warrior), drow elf druid (night elf druid), wood elf sorcerer (blood elf mage).

    We play a very tactical game: using positioning, cover; establishing battlefield control; then focussing down enemies, to tilt the action economy in our favour. It still occasionally goes to heck in a handcart, and that is usually when our rogue (in fact our best tactical player) steps up.

  • @uzziya6392

    This is why I love my players, there's a designated team leader and they do whatever the heck he says (as long as it's not stupid). They can discuss strategy, put forward their opinions and objections but he has the final say *and they actually go with it.* Having a player whose job it is to put their foot down and say "We're doing X" makes things flow so much better than 2 hours arguing over if to pull the lever or everyone just doing their own thing with zero thought to the others around them. It's also just fun to watch someone shout out a command and see the other player actually do it without arguing like how a real team would operate under pressure.
    It also gives them a convenient person to blame when things don't go perfectly.

    I think one of the most frustrating things for me to watch players doing is spreading damage evenly among opponents instead of trying to take them off the board. I mean, I get why they do it: it makes sense intuitively. Hurt someone in real life and they're less effective. But D&D doesn't _have_ that as a mechanic. An Orc with 10 HP is just as effective as an Orc with 15 HP. An Orc with 0 HP, on the other hand, is a different story.
    And +1000 for making, "Don't interrupt the Face." the first cab off the rank in this video.
    No one thinks it's a good idea to squirt Sovereign Glue into a lock while the Rogue's trying to pick it.
    No one thinks it's a good idea to erase the magic circle behind the Wizard as they draw it on the ground.
    Yet if I had a dollar for every time I've seen a player shove their "CHA is my dump stat" PC into the middle of a vital social interaction with an _absurd, unneccesary_ lie that no NPC capable of speech could _possibly_ believe and then look _dumbstruck_ that I'm calling for a CHA (Deception) roll from them*, I'd have ... (thinks) ... fifty-something bucks.
    "A Deception check? Oh shit, I'm not good at these."
    "Probably should have thought about that before you told the guard to get out of your way because you're the King of the Moon."
    Meanwhile, the player who's built their PC to be awesome at social interaction at the cost of combat/exploration effectiveness, has actually thought of a plausible negotiation strategy that will result in DCs achievable by something other than percentile dice, and who was _just about_ to have all their choices finally vindicated is just staring into space wondering what went wrong with their life.
    No one cares if your character isn't good at social interaction. There's going to be other opportunities see what that character shines at. They care that your normally borderline-mute psychopath picked _this particular_ moment to get "chatty".
    * Or, quite frequently, _not_ calling for a roll because the lie was _just that dumb._

    • @Shalakor
      @Shalakor 5 лет назад

      When I make a low Cha character, I very well plan for them to keep out of negotiations. If they're meant to make a point of being awkward in conversations as a character trait, save that for when there's not a lot of stakes or when the NPC has a reason for insisting on talking to that character.

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 5 лет назад

      Preaching to the choir... this one.
      My only retort, however, is the mild frustration of having become rather reknown for "Cha is my dumpstat" builds... ONLY to have the GM find every reason in the world, that the damn guards think MY PC is supposed to be "the face" of this party at this particular instant... OR some other reason for me to be in focus for the RP...
      SO in truest of fashion, I take a momentary pause, and MUCK EVERYTHING UP ROYAL, just as the awkward little psycho who doesn't do well in social situations authentically would. I shoot for hilarious with a mix of shock and disbelief, both on the NPC, and the GM who stuck me with it.
      ...or I just blatantly stab the idiot in the face (NPC, not the GM). ;o)

  • @Shalakor
    @Shalakor 5 лет назад

    Ya know, if that example strategy negotiation with everyone asking around to their comrades' strengths isn't something the party would do naturally, rather because they're still new to working together or whatever else, that scene would make a good opportunity to implement the old 4E Skill Challenge encounter for it to get people going on the role play.

    My group is super new so they didn't regard party cohesion. After some time, one of my players started to think her character was ineffective. I think other party members might just be doing her job better than her. I probably should've recommended her a different class but at this point I intend to just give her homebrew items and modifications that push her in a different direction.

    There is this one comment I am sure at the end of this day there will be thousands of. "My Bard has Bardic inspiration and they never use the die!"
    Bardic Inspiration and Aid are abysmally powerful if used correctly. You could as far as I am aware get a +10 to hit. A 10! To hit. If someone had the highest ac in the game naturally (21 I think) you could still hit them!
    If you aren't using the Bards inspiration die. Or - I don't know anything else he can do why do you even have one?
    Levitation sounds stupid. Sure. Until you realize you can pick up the strongest enemy on the field at level 2 and pelt him full of arrows until hes a bloody mess. Or throw him off a mountain by throwing something at him and letting go.

    Me and my past group we started as a jumbled mess of doing whatever. But after games with each other for awhile learning from each other and learning our characters and suck we became the Captain America averngers where we talked tactics and synergies our abilities and talents. It was a very natural feeling of growth and becoming a strong team. We took those skills and experiences and brought it to other groups and places. It's pretty cool to grow with your team and new players. What are your thoughts?

    Cohesion should be determined at session zero agreed. The party tactics aspect of the conversation is partly due to strategy if the actions of the party are developed first or on the fly. How much of tactics is simply due to meta-gaming?

  • @vikingguy8733

    As the sorcerer, I assumed the roll of the face for our party with such a high CHA rating. Our barbarian decided that her CHA should be her 2nd highest stat and had her dump stat be CON.
    So in every conversation we've had so far, she would shove in front and start the murder hobo machine before I can charm the npc.
    I am playing along but it is getting stale, very quickly. What should I do? It's part of her character's background for the high CHA but it feels inconsiderate.

    Personally I don't really understand why people worry about party composition in 5e. Not once has it been a problem in games I've played in,which are more often than not combat heavy. For example I've played and ran several west marches games where there's not a single melee character in a group but party has no trouble dealing with monsters that would typically need someone to be in the front taking hits. Much like how I've never had problems with everyone in the party being a martial character with very little or no magic at all.
    I think that the worst offender when it comes to people talking about party composition is when people talk about needing ''healers'' even though combat healing is simply not effective in 5e,no matter what class or subclass you play,at least until you get into tier 4 of play where life cleric doesn't even need to roll dice for any healing spells and has access to mass heal. Before that point it's basically impossible to outheal the damage your party is taking unless the DM runs monsters like it's an mmo and they attack nobody but the raging barbarian and even then it could be hard.
