  • Ten years after Mark Post created his first lab-grown hamburger, companies, who have collectively raised billions of dollars to figure out cultivated meat are moving really slowly.
    Some have gone out of business. Others will follow them.
    Part of the challenge is getting the meat cells to grow cheaply and at scale. The technology the industry has used thus far this has been borrowed from the world of pharma, an industry where you can charge a thousand or ten thousand dollars for an ounce of a cancer drug. Those cost dynamics don't work when you're making a chicken sandwich.
    Denis Kent thinks he may have the answer. HIs company, Prolific Machines, is replacing expensive growth media with maybe the cheapest source of energy in the world: light.
