  • "Indulgences". That word just sounds strange in the context of our faith. What are the common misconceptions people have about the Catholic teaching on Indulgences? How do they work? Do we still have them or was this abolished after the Reformation? How can we apply this to our everyday life? Tune in to the next episode of Catholic Feedback to hear what keith has to say.

Indulgences are a very important issue to be addressed. I was taught the awfulness of this practice, but later in life, I informed myself and saw its grace.
I live in Peru and was born in a low-class district. My parents were able to provide a good education for me by sending me to a Catholic school. It turns out that this school was a big portion of land donated by a rich Spaniard to the Church in the 1800. He generously specified in his Will to give that land for the education of poor girls, which helped me more than 100 years later. I'm not sure if he received an indulgence for that, but many people gave their possessions from their hearts to help the Church and spread the Gospel. Under this logic, I do understand that the Church would give indulgences for their acts of charity.

Thank u for this Keith, I grew up a protestant believer, & a anti-catholic on top of that inside a Baptist Church.
Indulgences is something of course we Protestants always had trouble with, but now that I found the truth in The Holy Catholic Apostolic Church, I needed to study this for my family can see what the Church always taught about
Indulgences. So u have left us with great info that we can fact-check on our own time, & be able to share this message to other protestants.
    So thank u
God bless u, & your family & God bless u all my brothers, & sisters 💯🙏🏼📿🌹🇻🇦💪🏻

Keith please keep posting content, you are one of the few calm, common sense voices left on social media! Please post more content encouraging Catholics with uplifting messages rather than just focusing on apologetics. Lots of men do apologetics. As a former pastor you offer something more unique which is a pastoring perspective: encouraging us in our faith, helping us deepen our understanding of Catholic living. I would love you to do a series on saints from the past 100 years and how they speak to us. As much as I love the community of saints from the past 2,000 years, we need to hear the stories of how Catholics are holding fast in the modern era. Other Christians or atheists NEVER hear these stories (except maybe about Mother Teresa) even Padre Pio is barely known outside the Catholic Church. That would be a new kind of apologetics i.e. it's all very well believing doctrine is true but how is it LIVED. That would be really powerful.
What about the young Italian Catholic who used the internet to evangelize (maybe he should be your patron 😄) who was recently beatified. PLEASE consider this as this is the content we need! 🙏 RUclips Catholics are mostly men, mostly talking a) traditional apologetics b) Catholic news c) ranting about various issues.
You may want to play to your strengths, don't just do what everyone else is doing. Be a pastor and present content as a PASTOR not an apologist. You are actually the only Catholic RUclips channel whose channel I watch regularly as I find many of the others can be more "niche". I appreciate that you speak to everyone, you don't pigeonhole yourself. To stand out, please don't just do what has already been done ad nauseum i.e. lots of apologetic topics. Talk about spirituality, prayer, the saints, encouragement, how to build a strong prayer life. I would like to see you bring on your parish priest or others to talk about the spiritual life rather than the same guests that cycle around all the Catholic RUclips channels, such as Gospel Simplicity, Matt Fradd etc because then you are just in a small circle sharing the same content with each other. Have on a Franciscan of the Renewal Brother and a Sister, talk to people out there serving rather than just the RUclips talking heads. That would be way more interesting and original. Thanks for listening. May God continue to bless all that you do 🙏

Thank you so much for that compliment. I am indeed trying to not just do what everybody else does. For Catholic feedback, I am answering questions from emails, so this is what I am working with. When I do have guests I want to have them address something that will help build people up, not just cover the same old stuff. I feel like the Unpacking the Mass Bible study and the daily Rosary are geared towards that. I have some other ideas too. Stay tuned for what I post tomorrow :). I really appreciate what you are saying. Thank you so much!!

This is incredibly enlightening. I have done several acts of mortification but never really understood what they are for. Midway through fasting, i "allow" myself to slip; acts of charity becomes plain giving. I still believe that these efforts are good but the way I am doing it lacks understanding and depth that it does not fully unite my acts to God's will or plan. This explanation of Indulgence inspires me and give me more motivation to continue what I am doing. This time though, it will bear a deeper significance and meaning. Thank you Keith! You are awesome! Act of the devil; that’s what the indulgences really were. It took advantage of the superstitious and those who were unlearned concerning the wonderful truths of the Bible.
To think that a system would deliberately suppress the truths of God’s word and claim infallibility on its part is unthinkable, but this is what happened during the period known as the Dark Ages when there was papal supremacy. Thank God for people like Martin Luther who himself was a monk. When God opened the eyes of this humble God- fearing man he nailed 95 theses on the door of a church exposing the abuses and falsehood of that fallen church. Had not God protected Luther, he too would have been one of the many who were burnt at the stake for opposing the false doctrines of that system.
History has not forgotten, and the blood of God’s people remains on it pages. “ come out of her, my people , lest you share in her sins, and receive of her plagues, for her sins have reached to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities”
One can read about that in the last book of the Bible, Revelation 18: 1-6.
Come out of her, get into the ark of safety before it’s eternally too late.

As a convert I have read the Catechism but I didnt fully understant the role of undulgences. I have done prayers like the Devine Mercy and Chaplet of St Michael that have indulgences for those who pray these faithfully. It must be remembered Anglican Churches offered Monuments of the deceased in Churches in exchange for Money. The Catholic Church doesnt lay down a minimum Donation for Mass like some Reformed Churches. We should remember the wood in our neighbours eye not to see the log in our own. Love our neighbours as our selves. But remember whats said about our faith comes from prejudice

There was a time when those in the Church were called saints (see the NT where the word saint often referred to those in the church on Earth).
But what is a saint? Today we technically mean those who have been judged (at the immediate judgement after death) to be worthy of heaven and are enjoying the Beatific Vision and have been declared so by the Vatican.
If you take the median ground between those of the Church on Earth being called saints; and those after the immediate judgement to be found worthy of the beatific vision but must first experience purgatory (for they will never lose their salvation so they are saved; just not fully saved yet); then you can consider them saints since they are saved and they can pray for us though they cannot pray for themselves and the Vatican has declared those in purgatory will indeed go to heaven.

Not sure how that doctrine is “tough”, let alone “toughest” - but so be it. The best source for the doctrine underlying the practice may be Paul VI’s 1968 Apostolic Constitution “Indulgentiarum Doctrina” - English translation here: www.vatican.va/content/paul-vi/en/apost_constitutions/documents/hf_p-vi_apc_01011967_indulgentiarum-doctrina.html

Quite a shock, I would imagine.

When you really delve into the life of Martin Luther, it’s clear that the indulgence issue was just an excuse that he used and our Protestant brethren really accept this as the reason of the reformation . He had OCD about sin and wanted a guarantee of Heaven ( once saved always saved) .So Luther then, wouldn’t need an indulgence bc once you’ve been baptized, you’re go to go Heaven no matter how many sins you commit,
