Confused Reviews - Episode 78 - John Carpenter's The Thing (1982)
The Thing is a 1982 American science fiction horror film directed by John Carpenter from a screenplay by Bill Lancaster. Based on the 1938 John W. Campbell Jr. novella Who Goes There?, it tells the story of a group of American researchers in Antarctica who encounter the eponymous "Thing", an extraterrestrial life-form that assimilates, then imitates, other organisms. The group is overcome by paranoia and conflict as they learn that they can no longer trust each other and that any of them could be the Thing. The film stars Kurt Russell as the team's helicopter pilot R.J. MacReady, with A. Wilford Brimley, T. K. Carter, David Clennon, Keith David, Richard Dysart, Charles Hallahan, Peter Maloney, Richard Masur, Donald Moffat, Joel Polis, and Thomas G. Waites in supporting roles.
Production began in the mid-1970s as a faithful adaptation of the novella, following 1951's The Thing from Another World. The Thing went through several directors and writers, each with different ideas on how to approach the story. Filming lasted roughly twelve weeks, beginning in August 1981, and took place on refrigerated sets in Los Angeles as well as in Juneau, Alaska, and Stewart, British Columbia. Of the film's $15 million budget, $1.5 million was spent on Rob Bottin's creature effects, a mixture of chemicals, food products, rubber, and mechanical parts turned by his large team into an alien capable of taking on any form.
The Thing was released in 1982 to negative reviews that described it as "instant junk" and "a wretched excess". Critics both praised the special effects achievements and criticized their visual repulsiveness, while others found the characterization poorly realized. The film grossed $19.6 million during its theatrical run. Many reasons have been cited for its failure to impress audiences: competition from films such as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, which offered an optimistic take on alien visitation; a summer that had been filled with successful science fiction and fantasy films; and an audience living through a recession, diametrically opposed to The Thing's nihilistic and bleak tone.
The film found an audience when released on home video and television. In the subsequent years, it has been reappraised as one of the best science fiction and horror films ever made and has gained a cult following. Filmmakers have noted its influence on their work, and it has been referred to in other media such as television and video games. The Thing has spawned a variety of merchandise - including a 1982 novelization, "haunted house" attractions, board games - and sequels in comic books, a video game of the same title, and a 2011 prequel film of the same title.

hey Confused Reviews what about you can review another nickelodeon movie called Rango next month. I know you don’t review animated movies, but I knew that you grew up with Nickelodeon as you talked about it in your Good Burger review, so please give it a chance?
Love Rango - 10/10
@@ConfusedReviews love Rango too - 9/10 (by rewatched... again)
Great review of The thing from 1982.All the information added to this review make this a memorable review for years to come.
I didn't realize how all those movies during that same year gave the thing a real challenge.
The blood test scene should be required viewing in film schools to teach modern jump scare addicted filmmakers how one actually earns a jump scare.
This couldn't be said any better.
Also, the scene from Exorcist 3
Except that it’s not a jump scare in the modern sense. It’s a set up and pay off of well filmed / times suspense.
Caught The Thing at the drive-in opening night and was completely blown away. I'm 99% sure it would have been a hit if it was released in the fall or winter. I know that wasn't super common for big movies back then, but did Universal not look at the insanely crowded summer release schedule and not once consider moving it out of the late June release date? Yeah, critics ripped it to shreds and I remember even Wilford Brimley saying the movie stunk, but John Carpenter is now dancing on their graves. It's just a bummer that JC couldn't buy a hit after Halloween and most of his best work had to be regarded as "cult classics" years after release. The Thing of course being regarded as one of the best Sci-fi horror movies of all time.
I always wonder what critics have to say after they bash a movie that is now consider a classic. Hearing some of the things they said about this movie also makes me wonder what movie they saw because this movie has some great characters in it.
Yeah the “lack of compelling characters” complaint was maybe the most confusing- no pun intended. I kinda understand the VFX being too abrasive to what they were accustomed to, but no characters? They each had insight and moments to shine, all reacting normally and realistically.
Thanks, Monty!
You can watch this masterpiece in the middle of August in Florida with 110 degree heat index and STILL feel cold.
As much as I truly LOVED Escape From New York, Halloween, and They Live, I think The Thing is John Carpenter at his best.
Story 10/10
Special Effects 10/10
Character 10/10
Kills 10/10
Overall 10/10 (Masterpiece!!!)
What makes this feel special is that in MOST horror movies, the characters die in ways that you could’ve easily avoid. But HERE, the characters are actually SMART. Actual smart dudes who are intelligently enough to try and solve a problem. Who occasionally make VERY fatal mistakes.
Tobe Hooper is considered a master of the genre, but it’s interesting to realize that The Thing and ROTLD probably wouldn’t be as incredible or beloved if he’d been kept on as director of both films.
Those films are just unimaginable without Carpenter and O’Bannon.
Agreed!
I loved this movie. Imo the best John Carpenter movie and the best Remake that was ever made.
The creature design still hasn’t been topped.
Absolutely - this movie is a masterpiece!
The Thing is my favorite horror movies and in my top 3 movies of all time. It’s just fantastic. The special effects, the acting, the tension, it’s all perfect.
Man how is your channel not bigger? I've been binge watching all of your videos and been loving them to death. Subbed
Guess it just isn’t my time yet. Thanks for watching!
Just subbed. How is this channel only getting a couple thousand views a video? This is well done and very entertaining. I'm going to share this guys channel out bc it deserves to be seen
Glad you enjoyed and thanks for watching!
One of the better reviews of ‘the thing’ I’ve seen by the way; very informative it also really entertaining …I appreciate the behind the scenes inclusions as well. Feel this channel should be more popular. Great commentary and editing.
Greg, you the man!
DUUUUUDE!!! Before I even watch: this is tied with T2 as my fav film(s) of all time. Excited to see your take on this masterpiece and masterclass in cinema.
Much thanks my friend!
@@ConfusedReviews as expected, a legendary and hilarious review of this golf standard. I mention it everytime so here goes again: glad I found you when I did some years back. Keep up the grind to the top 🙏🏾
Always appreciated! Keeps the surge of motivation strong 💪🏼
I watched this movie when I was 10 years old on cable tv.
Those movie scared the HELL out of me. The whole idea that one drop of The Thing could end you terrified me for weeks.
on another channel binge ;)
That "something i can only dream.. RELAX" joke got me again!
That Freddy’s always getting rambunctious!
Found your channel recently and I have to say you absolutely nail the combination of informative and entertaining. Looking forward to watching the rest of your videos.
Thanks, Michael!
Such a good movie. Can’t wait for the review, you’re always bringing fresh quality.
Incredible man incredible. Can’t imagine how long this took to edit
It was a quick turnaround for sure - as I started in mid-October! But a few sleepless nights is nothing compared to NOT releasing on Halloween!
God damn the malcom in the middle bit had me dying I knew it was coming! 😂
THE LOCAL GIRLS?!?!
@@ConfusedReviews the best Malcolm bit by far is when they do the mega rocket and it just goes from night to a still shot of day time
“Box said two days!”
@@ConfusedReviews jesus ok bell icon clicked video liked and shared do you want my first born child as well?😂😂
Yeah but you can have him on weekends lmao
The movie is officially 40 years old!
Still one of my favorite horror movies and one of Carpenter's finest, he actually sticks closer to the original short story by John W. Campbell Jr
The screenplay was by Bill Lancaster, the late Burt Lancaster's son
Kurt Russell is amazing next to Wilford Brimley and Keith David
Taps into the fears of our own extinction with themes of mistrust and paranoia
There could also be an AIDS allegory
Love the fantastic practical special creature effects by Rob Bottin along with the late Ennio Morricone's haunting score
Watching The Thing in the time of Covid provides the film an added relevancy
Particularly as cases and related fatalities in the UK are both on the rise once more
Someone you know and trust is carrying an agent that attacks you on a molecular level and, in a very messy fashion, could stop you being you
It's a shame it tanked at the box office and wasn't met with the best reception
But over time it has gained much more appreciation and remains big with fans
Plus it inspired such acclaimed contemporary filmmakers as Quentin Tarantino, Guillermo del Toro, J.J. Abrams, Neill Blomkamp, and countless others
So happy they made a video game sequel 20 years ago
The film continues to reflect man-made apocalypse anxieties (like a literal Cold War between man and alien)
It makes me happy that John Carpenter finally got his well deserved credit for this horror masterpiece. The critics and dumb audiences of the time almost ruined his career.
Not gonna lie, the second I saw that thumbnail, that subtle theme instantly started to play in my head.
🎵bum bum… bum bum…🎵
2:18, And Goosebumps made one of its best stories.
Just on time for Halloween
Wow, someone finally articulated how I felt, hearing The Siskel & Ebert review!
Well done :)
i live in Minnesota so i know the cold this movie can capture the same feelings of crushing sense of isolation and cold as well as when i look outside my window in January.
As a Michigan native, I feel the same freezing fuckery!
@@ConfusedReviews f in chat for you bud.
Probably up there with the greatest movies ever made.. It's one of those where I struggle to find a single flaw
BTW I'm Norwegian and even though he spoils the movie he sounds so irratic that most won't know what he means by the dog is a "thing".. Anyway we always love when we get included in Hollywood movies 😂
I found it really fascinating that they'd be willing to "spoil" the movie like that - but I guess the 80's weren't as concerned with foreign audiences like they are today.
@@ConfusedReviews i think for most viewers at the time it was more exciting to hear Norwegian spoken in a Hollywood movie than to worry about what he was saying.. I've actually never heard a Norwegian go " I like the thing but damn the beginning spoiled it for me..".. I thinking it's becuase when you first see him he just seems like a crazy man who's shooting at a dog.. If you don't know what the movie is a bout his lines won't really tell you what " it's a thing " even means
Dude, that "partial arts" comment reminded me of one of the best movies I've ever seen. 'The Crippled Masters.' You should definitely check it out if you haven't seen it.
This is a damn good movie! Great acting and Great Special Effects! I do also love The Thing From Another World, it’s cheesy, yes, but I still love it!
Siskel and Ebert thought horror movies were going to destroy the earth
Little did they know it had no impact and the world would destroy itself naturally lol
@@ConfusedReviews so true
And They even trashed Original My Bloody Valentine which that film is badass Slasher film and John Carpenter The Thing is One The Best 80s horror movie remake that Kickass, Siskel & Ebert are know to trashed amazing films from action to horror.
Good thing this review is here
Without this thing I don’t think Halloween would be the same!
@@ConfusedReviews yes on both fronts
2 words describe Rob Bottin: Master Craftsman.
2 times for me i watched the thing in theaters last year i love this movie so muchwatch this sunday its so! Scary its talked about so much cuz carpnter knows hes work 🎉🎉🎉
Hi, coming from someone who lives in Canada and has walked his dog, at 3 in the morning, on a Fuchs you it's February, -45 C night.
You, Mr. Video maker, are correct.
But I take a specific route when watching this movie.
It must be nightime, it must be winter and there can be no indoor temp. above 10c.
I know that it's a lot of specific care taken, but for the greatest horror movie, EVER. I think it's worth it :)
Cheers from Canada
P.S. I did not like the movie, the first time I saw it. Really!
As a Michigan native, I understand the struggles of the frozen white!
You didn't mention the fact Stan Winston had to be called in the help with the special effects as Rob was way over his (spider)head. The stop motion animation at the end has also not been addressed. Apart from that a nice little piece.
14:40 haha, nice Phineas and Ferb reference
Yes 1982 in my opinion was one of the best years for Cinema.
Two words. Wilford Brimley.
Two more words: Fuck. Yes.
My number one favorite film of all time
5:14 but did you know that The Secret of NIMH was also competing E.T. as well? but at the same time did not break records, at least it was not a flop.
THE THING great review man :)
THANK YOU WON!
In fairness for the end of the movie , regardless if either one is a thing or not, it doesn't matter . They would both freeze to death just the same. In the end , it doesn't matter
Great review on this one. This movie scares me more than most other horror/sci-fi flicks. This is something you cannot defend against. It will find you. Plus shows just how garbage human nature is.
Great review
Thanks!
@@ConfusedReviews welcome
Is it sad that I can tell when a voice clip says “right there!” I can tell it’s the teacher in the incredibles 😂dude the references are amazing
His sheer dedication makes it useable in almost any circumstance.
In most movies jumpscares are just cheap, lame and stupid. BUT THE BLOODTEST SCENE?!
A jumpscare that I will admit got me?! Yes
A huge part of why it works is unlike other jump scares where it’ll hold on the shot for five seconds, ONCE, The Thing has that same shot of Mac holding the Petri dish SEVERAL times so even if you’ve seen it the jump scares you.
CHILDS was the THING
he drank a MOLOTOV cocktail
🍾 ⛽
Hey Confused Reviews, I have an idea for you😊
You covered the movie adaptations of the dukes of hazzard and even the TV show, but could you do the reunion movies? I’d love to hear your opinion on them, personally I think they’re better than the new movies. Would love to hear back from ya😊
Fear not my friend! - the 'Reunion!' special will get the Confused Reviews treatment sometime in the coming year! Stay tuned!
Yeah, the dog scene...is..tough and I hate people that ask before the movie, does the dog get hurt??
NO! It's a movie, not made in Italy, in the 70's.
No worries...
Fantastic new film review, of one of my all time favourite films. I'm really looking forward to your They Live review. also happy halloween. :)
Happy Halloween to you, too! Glad you enjoyed.
One of my favorite horror movies ever! Thanks Luke!
Great review
The thing flopped because two film critics said they didn't like the film and a few other films came out that year couldn't people them days afford to watch maybe two films a week?
LUKE
are you going to review the
prequel ?
Have you reviewed temors the first one, Christine, or the John wick movie's
are you ever going to a review on Adam Sandler let's be cops or have you already done that?
Sandler… isn’t in that..?
@@ConfusedReviews Oh, i thought he was my mistake
I dont have anything to really add, you covered pretty much everything. But i will not hear Dumb and Dumberer slander.
you can say all you want about that movie, but one thing it has is it will always be remembered more than Dumb and Dumber To purely by virtue of the "HE SHIT EVERYWHERE" scene
that and I lowkey think the two guys from Dumberer did a better job playing the characters than Carey and Daniels in the sequel there i said it. its like they forgot how to play the characters in "To"
Woah, woah, woah! Everyone knows Bob Saget’s unforgettable performance is exempt from any criticism on the whole movie.
It’s practically a surrealist short film on its own…
@@ConfusedReviews honestly dumb and dumberer is pretty bad but at the end of the day it was just a gross out comedy near the end of the fad of grossout comedies.
But Dumb and Dumber To is like one of the worst fucking things I’ve ever seen. It feels more like late season family guy humour than Dumb and Dumber. I had friends who were lifelong Jim Carey fans who just turned on him after seeing that movie.
Wow! We have similar taste.
