I am an "old school" public safety bench & field technician who is strong in "conventional" 2-way radio installation, troubleshooting, repair, alignment, etc, but then I went off in a different direction in my work life for a while, (Middle East contracting, etc), and failed to comprehend just how fast 2-way radio technology changed! Fortunately I have some good solid classroom training in digital, sampling, etc, and even some courses from Tait, but I really appreciate these videos; they help!

@pabdou123 it is the switch to toggle between Repeater Frequency and Direct Frequency. RF transmits much further because of the repeater, where DF is a line of sight frequency that has a much lower range.

This switch is programmable by the radio technician and can serve many different functions depending upon that programming. It can turn scan on or off, turn encryption on or off, switch from a repeater pair to local transmit on the receive frequency only, etc. I would bet that a lot of users, like us do not have it programmed to do anything.

Nice video. The only thing you're incorrect about is that the dial on the top that surrounds the channel selector is not there to turn the light on. Once switched, it locks the keypad on the front of the unit

It's programmable. Typically but not always used to enable or disable encryption.

I believe the unit can be used as analog or digital. But digital is the way to go nowadays. Perhaps where you, there are not enough repeaters to support the necessary coverage area. As far as operation issues go, there are a lot of features in the programming software that you have to adjust. It just takes a lot of messing around with the software to figure everything out. And don't ever call motorola tech support. 90% of them are idiots and don't know anything about their own products.
