- Today on The Garage Engineer, we save an Original ‘DR Field and Brush Mower’ that had been sitting for 2 years. This mower was built during the late 1980s and was taken care of and not left out in the weather. Although this unit did not have the original motor we did get a bonus with an upgraded 8 hp Briggs and Stratton Industrial motor. But watch the video to see if ‘Can We Save It?’

Just used mine this weekend. They are hell for stout!!
They keep on going. And are tough. Thanks for watching!
I realize your video was yrs ago.. but I have the same brush cutter.. only difference is the muffler.. but got it running and fuel leaking same way.. funny had a hell of a time removing grease gun from fitting..funny.. but your video is what I needed to so I can get mine going.. thank you
These cutters live forever. Also. I always had my grease gun stick to the nipple all the time and hated it, until I found this grease gun quick connect. here is a link to my amazon store for the quick connect amzn.to/3VoFf4a. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for posting these vids on the DR mower, I got one for $200 and it runs but it needs a little TLC and these vids help out. Hoping to use your trick to getting the oil plug out in the other video to get an old plug off a compressor that's completely stuck.
I need to do an update video Upgrading to new belts and a better belt adjustment. Glad the oil plug trick worked for you. It has saved me a few times. Thanks for watching.
Good job bringing something back to life!
Identical to one I bought new in about 1992 and sold when I moved a dozen years later. The man I sold it to GAVE it back to me in September this year. It, too, had been sitting idle for two years and was in about the same shape as yours. Same engine. Everything but the engine was seized with rust. After changing oil, buying a new carburetor, breaking through the rust with PB Blaster, pumping in gobs of grease in all five zerks, and sharpening the blade, it works fine. Belts are in bad shape, same as yours--probably original--but are good enough for now.
You can download the manual from DR free.
That’s incredible. I need to find the other 2 zerk fittings. I got 3 of them. I’ll download the manual. Thanks for the tip. Thanks for watching.
@@TheGarageEngineer I misremembered. Only four: two on the main axle housing, one on the left wheel hub, and one on the blade bearing housing.
Blade drive belt adjustment is through the square-head set screw on the deck extension assembly.
I sent you a message on Facebook.
I have the same mower and it came from the factory with the 8 hp.
Good info to know.
I have almost the same model, it's a 1996, 8hp, electric start. I think I'm gonna sell it.
electric start. that is a good idea. I might have to add that to mine.
Do you know the size of the blade belt and where one could be ordered?
Standard 5L570 (5/8" by 57"). From page 11 of the manual
Beast!
🙏🙏👍
Great video. We have an old Dr Mower, but we have a hard time finding parts. Can anyone help?
It’s not necessary to count turns turn it all the way in back it out 1 1/2 turns and you’re good to go
True. But I like to see how many turns it was at when it was last used. Not saying that would be the correct amount but good info to know. But yes 1.5 turns is the standard on most machines. Thanks for watching.
If you can't you're in trouble. Bachtold design is dirt simple.
Very True. But I do need new belts to make it running better. Thanks for watching.
