Contrary to thoughts in the early days of modern astronomy, the interstellar medium is filled with more than 200 known molecules. These stretch from the simple H2 all the way to the C60 and C70 carbon cages. Many are common and are known on Earth, while many others are seemingly bizarre and have unexpected chemical structure. In this presentation, Dr. Ryan C. Fortenberry discusses the history and development of the field of astrochemistry and the census of molecules found beyond the Earth’s terrestrial veil.
