    It's a solid product. I had a dbx until someone borrowed it from me, I forgot who and never got it back.
    Their price range was a lot more acceptable early on but now they are just too expensive for home use so I won't be buying another one.
    I think there's room in the market for a new product like this.
    After all, their hardware are fairly standard and their secret sauce are mostly driven by their software which others also are making these days. So all we need are for someone to produce a new USB device.

    I need to optimize over 5,000 access points, in over 200 buildings, on over 450 acres, while dealing with close to 30,000 clients, and fighting configurations with over 9,000 rogue access points. Our solution was with Aruba Networks although we do use the MetaGeek Products for some trouble shooting. Being able to recognize the interference device is the hardest thing to do in the spectrum analysis of Channalyzer. Also a very difficult thing is tracking down devices which have intermittent broadcasting sessions.

    I work for the cable company. So I set up a lot of home wireless networks. Customers get upset when their " 300 foot range router" is only transmitting like 50 feet properly. So I have to sit down and explain interference to the customer. This will be a neat tool for me so I can decrease as much interference as possible.

    Great video Linus, really enjoyed it.
    Super expensive though - and for future reference, it would be nice if you mentioned the price BEFORE rather than after the review - simply because some people can get an idea of what price range you're reviewing it at.
    Anyway - great tool it seems, but very niche too.

    the top meter is called an rta (Real Time Analyzer) and the bottom is called a spectrograph

    • @PotatoFi
      @PotatoFi 5 лет назад

      Depends on the tool. A lot of Wi-Fi-centric spectrum analyzers call the top graph the "Density View" since they predominantly use Color by Density. Bottom graph is called "Waterfall View" or "Swept Spectrograph" depending on the tool. I really like "Real-Time Analyzer" though... That is very descriptive.

    All of my neighbors have the cheap basic routers provided to them for a monthly fee. Rather than using the optimal 2.4GHz channels (1,6,11), some of them have foolishly changed to alternate channels, believing that they're avoiding any overlapping interference, when in fact that is precisely what's causing it. As for me, I bought my own high end dual-band router and get to use the 5GHz channels practically all on my own.

    I recently had to deal with dropping about 5 - 8 packets every 20 minutes. When gaming this would drop my connection nearly every time (madness). I thought the router was bad. Ended up being a NON-WiFi device nearby. I think it was in the neighbors home. I have disabled the 2.4 ghz network, using only the 5 ghz network. I have not had an issue since. The only device that won't connect to 5ghz at this point is my iPhone 4S. No big deal there.

      Let's say you wanted to download a file that was 40 GB. You can't pause it if you do it in chrome or firefox or whatever.

      ***** yeah for example a lot of games (particularly MMO's) will use torrents, because of the extremely large file sizes, heck even the Humble Bundle has offered torrents since day one from what I remember.

    • @TheDiggster13
      @TheDiggster13 10 лет назад +6

      Χρήστος Φασούλας Much faster to download things when lots of people have seeded it (I think that's the right term, I've not used it for a while). It also means that you aren't downloading a file from the server of the person that owns the file, but from all the other people who have downloaded it. This allows, for instance, game developers to release a Torrent download of their game installer, but then not have to worry about using all their bandwidth to supply it to consumers.

    the wi-spy is way overpriced, especially since it will not help with devices out of your control, and for ones in your control, they often list their frequency, or will have an FCCID which will list which frequency it uses. My main complaint is just that it is overpriced, the hardware inside of it, is pretty much worth less than $10It is basically using 2 dirt cheap radios (1 for 2.4GHz, and another for 5GHz) (often sold by Ti for less than $2 each)
    They have far lower data rates than a true wifi radio, and are designed for low bandwidth communication (less than 100kbit/s), they then have it send raw samples which their software then interprets as the graph that you see. (similar to the RTLSDR. which cost $8 and does 22MHz, to 2.2GHz, and offers a higher data rate, though the dynamic range is only 70 dB VS the 94dB of the wi-spy dbx

      The 2.4GHz only model is simply a USB controller + a TI CC2500 (about $3 worth of hardware not including the PCB) they then sell it for $750 (their software has fewer features than even SDR sharp (a free program)
      furthermore, TI sells the 2.4GHz wi-spy equivalent for $50+, it is the EZ430-RF2500, and some users already made some code to make it function as a spectrum analyzer. e.g., jmkikori.homepage.bluewin.ch/devel/ez430-rf2500.html

      I know, right? But I guess they expect some pros to pay such a large premium for it.

      Razor2048 you can build one of these things for 20$ with a raspberry Pi and a radio antenna

    Wanted to also add that the wifi helper tool is the biggest waste of money that have. Iy is not automated, and all it does is walk you through changing the wifi channel of the router, and then running a web based speed test on each channel to determine the best one. the problem is that for most people, their wifi will be faster than their internet connection, thus leading to inaccurate results. It does not perform a LAN based speed test between 2 computers on the network in order to determine the best performing channel. For example, suppose a user has a 20mbit down and 5mbit upload internet connection and eavh of the 11 wifi channels can do well above 20mbit/s in both direction, then wifi helper will be unable to choose the best channel as all of them are being bottle necked by the WAN connection.
    If a user knows how to change the wifi channel on their router, they can do everything that wifi helper does using the router's webUI and speedtest.net
    To accurately determine the best wifi channel, you must do a LAN based speedtest on all channels where the only possible bottleneck is the wifi connection, and then over the course of probably an hour for each channel, compare the average speeds and look at the throughput graphs in order to see which channel offers the best overall performance.
    Wifi helper does not do this and thus, it is 100% useless and offers nothing of value over the free inssider 2.0

    Does this increase the mbps on laptops?
    And this might sound stupid but can it be used for desktop pc's as a wireless network card?
    If it can how much mbps would you have. It might be really stupid because a network card is cheaper.
    Van someone tell me.

      No router or tool can actually GIVE YOU ..MORE mbps than what your ISP is already proving through the lines that you modem or gateway already provide. All this could possibly do is help you get back whatever mbps you are losing due to interference. That is the entire point of this video. All good vibes intended. cheers.
