- Yet again making the most of the Walksnail Avatar Pro FPV camera's ability to see in the dark, and doing a night FPV flight with my Heewing T1 RC plane. Specifically on this flight I was testing the new Walksnail 34.40.15 firmware.

I believe night flying will contiue to gain popularity for many reasons and the camera just keep getting better and better.

@BonafidePirate (Keith) posted a fixed wing video last week, where he mentioned a firmware update. Said, "one step forward, two steps back" can of thing. His video is timestamped, so easy to find. I do know here experienced the same video compression issues earlier in the year, but not sure if he experiencing recently. (was daytime/early evening flight)
One thing you could do is just run a 20 min. recoding on the bench with a fan/airflow on the VTx. I don't think the light level has anything to do with it. Do wonder if it's related to a heating/cooling issue, something that could be bench tested if have a can of compressed air (for cleaning computer keyboards) as acts as a freeze spray.
Would be nice if Caddex/Walksnail included an option, or mode specific for fix-wing, or quad style flying. Or even a dedicated branch of the firmware (if need be) to handle the compression differently based on flying style. (fast flew of view flow, vs. more steady cinematic flow) It could be a product/selling feature if done right.
Now that winter is on its way here in the UK, I'm excited to finally try night flying.

That night image is amazing
720p60 is the only mode in wich onboard recording works w/o this bug. The files are still splitted by the 4 GiB filesystem limit so not much than 10min are in a single file.
Thanks for highlighting the recording problem! It's a dealbreaker in my eyes, but I look forward to adopting Walksnail once it has been solved.
I wouldn't let it be a deal breaker for you. The walksnail system is generally very good other than this one issue, and you can work around it by using the beta firmware I mentioned in the video

I also have the Pro cam and I've 100% had the corrupt video in VTX recordings and it was daytime footage. Firmware was 32.37.10
Yeah annoyingly the problem is persistent, day or night. Really hope they fix it asap, not much point if having onboard recording otherwise
The stabilized onboard video looks good. Was it easy to get the sync points in Gyroflow?
The footage sync'd fine in gyroflow for the first part of the flight, but as the flight continued and the footage became more corrupted, the later footage lost sync and wouldnt work at all in gyroflow annoyingly. You'll notice in the video that the footage at the end isn't stabilized at all for that reason
Hey!! Amazing video, very informative. I love flying at night my planes. My best plane for that is Zohd Drift with analog Runcam Night Eagle. I have flown it as late as 00.30 hours. No problems flying it in pitch dark. I fly it every New Year, just soaring over fireworks. Night flying is so calming, you just feel invisible, like piloting F117 at night over some desert during Desert Storm :). I recently got into walksnail on my Zohd Dart XL and I love it, especially at dusk, but I am also having corruption issues. Maybe I could ask you privately for that beta fw? Thank you for interesting fixed wing content! I am not into quads.
Haha, yeah it is a bit like flying a F117 lol. Proper stealthy. I also just enjoy seeing the city lights in the dark, looks pretty lol. Yeah if you message me on instagram or provide me your email I'll give you a copy of the beta firmware :)
Thanks for this info. I wonder why they didn’t implement the dvr fix, seems like a massive omission to me. Have you tried the 30minute file size yet? Only thing that makes sense to me is that it maybe avoids the issue so is effectively a workaround instead of a fix.
I wonder why too. My only guess is they haven't deemed it to be a priority. Most of their customers are probably quad pilots, and as quads only fly for a few minutes each time, they probably haven't had many complaints. I hope they fix it soon though. In the mean time I'll probably go back to the beta firmware I had before which saw this issue fixed.
@@gizfpv I’ll be updating to this version pretty soon, might as well really as the other improvements will be worth it I suppose. In the meantime I’ll just carry on hoping that anything interesting happens in the first 10 minutes of each flight. 😂🤙

Yeah annoyingly the OSD still flickers a little. Tbh I don't really notice it any more though, just kinda go used to it. Hopefully they'll fix it one day though
Avatar can record gyro data for more than 34 minutes?

On my Heewing T1? It's using the stock electronics (from the PNP kit). The battery I use is a 3000mah 4s Li-ion
On the O3 the night footage is so dark it was a downgrade from the O2. The walksnail system seems to be shaping up gradually and is tempting. I feel like O4 is almost upon us due 2024 though so might wait to see.
Odd my 03 is really good at night
Comparatively to the O2 original camera and especially with a Caddx Polar. The O3 is just darker. @@MrBEEFCAKE26
I have the same issue with the avatar pro recordings, glad you did a video about it. I have a theory that it’s possibly an issue with power supply so I tried a larger capacitor and maybe it’s placebo, but it feels like it’s better to me. I just installed a 50v 1000uf and it’s a hurricane here so I can’t test it but I have hopes. But in the end the firmware issues are annoying.

Easily. As far as I know the Avatar Pro is currently the best FPV camera for night flying
Is your problem not due to digital noise, you typically get artifacts in low light conditions, if your camera is not set to a high ISO setting?
Nah it's not artifacts due to low light. The same thing happens during the day too 🤦

VTX records anyway.

Yeah annoyingly for reasons I don't understand, the VTX stops recording if connection is lost, and restarts when connection is re-established. I wish it wasn't like that
