  • Craig L. Byrd of Cultural Attaché talks to Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang about his new opera, "note to a friend."
    The work, having its world premiere at this year's Prototype Festival in New York, is inspired by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa's "Note to a Certain Old Friend.
    Akutagawa is the writer whose short story "Rashomon" inspired by the classic film by Akira Kurosawa.
    Amongst Lang's other works are "prisoner of state," "The Loser," "Anatomy Theater" and "The Little Match Girl Passion."
    In this interview Lang discusses the themes of death and suicide found in his opera, how he went about adapting the text for his opera and what the long list of ideas he has percolating for future works.
    NOTE: There is a frank discussion of suicide as a theme and as an act in this interview.
