Used to ride an xr600r out in the desert quite a bit. Went camping in the dunes near the Ca/Az border with a group and one guy had a cr500. I took it out for an early morning ride by myself. I was kind of putting around to get the feel of it, then got to a spot where I could really open it up. The thing just about scared the shit out of me. Went back to camp and was happy to hop on my 600 again.

That bike is FUCKING MEAN! This video shows that Tyler Wozney is an amazing rider, there's parts of the video where you can see when he gets on the gas and it just rips hard. It Most people literally couldn't even hang on. It's pretty amazing, to be honest

I've been riding 500's off and on since 1988. I'm a big guy (6'8" 320lb) and I have trouble keeping the front end down when ripping it. This dude man handles this bike!!! Was it tuned down or were you just in beast mode?
Bryan Roberts Its just the way he rides it, his body and track positioning when he gets on the throttle are what keeps the front end down. The thing about fast riders is that they keep their momentum going all the way around the track, so when they get on thw throttle, they have a lot of forward momentum, so when the power comes it drives him forward and not the front wheel up. Slower people tend to stop and go a lot, breaking momentum, so when they get on the gas heavy the front wheel wants to go up because there isnt enough momentum to cause the power to be used 100% for forward drive. Its hard to put into words but i hope you could understand what i mean
+A. Shaw The 500s were mostly used in desert racing because they pull harder at high speeds. And yeah, I've never thought my '99 CR250 needed more power. The thing's actually scary... Fun... but scary, always a rush to crack that throttle.

After 87 the cr's were detuned to make them more rideable lol ! 85 86 and the 87's were thee most potent cr's made .I raced a 83 cr480 and a 87cr500 in the expert/pro classes at 5 4" n 135 lbs and had no problem riding them at all .ITS ALL ABOUT THROTTLE CONTROL!!! BRRAAAAPPP
Someone just make ONE legit pro race of a 500 2t vs a 450 4t Just to show that all the new tech being put into the 4t's is COMPLETELY useless! 2 strokes are still simply superior even some of the older ones....
+Glenn71 I think it would take a lot to keep up with the machine but with the amount of just shear power you could probably pull enough of a gap that by the time your tired you don't have to push it that hard just pace yourself and hold the lead

Just wish the BIG 4 would come back with a 2 stroke 500. With today’s technology with EFI and electric start, better suspension, steering stabilizer, list goes on that these bikes would be so potentially brutal. Then they can start a new class for supercross. More bikes, more money

Ive got one of these things in the garage it's a 1986 one of the first water cooled affairs, makes me want to recommission it, think the coolant has eaten half the engine though and my midlife legs may not be able to kick it over anymore, what a machine shit myself on more than one occasion riding it in the past, long may they go on and long may people preserve them for the next generation to appreciate bet they are worth a fair bit of cash now I will have to look in the classified adds.

I attended RedBud '85 when they ran all three classes. I really think Wozney, using modern techniques that riders use now, might well win the 500 Class if riding like this.

Great bike.Sounds a little flat.But im used to hearing them barking thru the forestry.As far as giving the 4 strokes a run for there money.thats a big call.4 stroke factory race bikes r fucking fast.plus the added torque of a high output 4stroke engine.Personally listening to a 500 by itself barking thru the forest gets me pumped.long live the big bangers.

This engine MUST be tuned to be VERY mild, there just isn’t any way for someone to ride a full blown 500 two stroke that hard on the pipe, no way!
