When I was a child my family lived in a real, old “farm house” on 100 acres. The barn doors were outside on the barns. There were no signs inside the house directing people to various locations. Apparently we knew where we were and where we were going. That said, watching this video brought some feelings of dismay. I feel much in the interior design world has become increasingly trendy, incredibly temporary and often meaningless. I truly miss the “real” no matter what the decor choice.
"The barn doors were outside on the barns. There were no signs inside the house directing people to various locations. Apparently we knew where we were and where we were going." I laughed so hard. But I completely co-sign this comment. LOL
Re: Dismay over current interior design styles being trendy/temporary/meaningless: I think the word you're looking for is “kitchy” - a tacky, almost cartoonish object alluding to a certain aesthetic without actually being of the genre. For example, pictures of the Eiffel Tower, a “Paris” sign, printed pillows saying, “Vivre la France” and a metal bucket embossed with the word “Fleurs.” This kind of questionable taste used to be confined to the kitchen, where daisies, ducks, roosters and livestock have dwelled for decades. Desperate for originality (and lacking imagination) some turned to kitch in an attempt to create unpretentious “destination spaces” in their homes. I commiserate with you, my friend. My childhood home had a velvet matador painting at the end of the hall which my parents thought exotic and worldly. The bedroom with its dark wood furniture and bright satins was downright garish. I have an aunt & uncle whose den was decked out in sports memorabilia associated with their favorite team. Tacky doesn’t begin to describe it, but they were happy as pigs in ...uh, the *kitch*en. Come Sunday, the whole family donned their team jerseys. I guess the idea is ‘when one can’t make it to the venue, bring the venue into the home....’
I couldn't agree more. To me a home is evolved and somewhat eclectic which reflects travels, memories, sentimental passed down treasures, etc.. Those are truly comfortable homes that are unique and not fly by night latest trends. European homes are a perfect example. Lovely
Americans get off on buying new stuff and throwing out perfectly good vintage stuff. "modern farmhouse" was a plastic pastiche and I'm so glad it's dead
Farmhouse will never be dead. Maybe certain elements of farmhouse will go, but farmhouse is here to stay. Many people aren’t into modern, like myself. I’d rather have a collected, curated home than throw everything out because something new comes along.
'Farmhouse is dead!' Yikes! 'Kinda harsh the way that was stated🥹😬 'So glad they can laugh and have fun, while trash talking other's home decor😳 I don't like the modern either @tammykravitz4617 and I consider my home 'refined' and 'elegant,' even if they don't🙄
@@jennawilkens1580 they said multiple times that living in an old, classic Farmhouse and choosing decor associated with it will always be relevant and a good choice. The modern Farmhouse trend is what has taken the trend so far over the top. It's not a good representation of what a beautiful, old Farmhouse truly is. Like yours! Anyway, Interior design and tastes will always be the best choice for each individual creating it. I don't understand why anyone would be so offended by a difference in opinion that they make childish, petty comments to/about a professional interior designer who's just doing what they get paid to do. Don't like it? Go find that one person who speaks your decor language and do what makes you happy in your own personal space.
@@misspeggy7 Agreed. A lot of designs are dead; however, those should've never come out to begin with...hence the reason they're not timeless. Those signs are awful!
But then you wouldn't spend money to get rid of everything they told you to buy 3 yrs ago. If they don't make up this crap, they would have no income..
Harvest gold and avocado green is dead along with mauve carpeting. Things change along with style. You can do your own thing, but might find it difficult to find dried flowers or wallpaper borders to do so.
Agree, plus the romantic say English or European cottage look just resonates with some people. I just dont think you can make these blanket statements or edicts for what's in and what's out. I have clients with small kids, from 18 most, to 12 they do live on a farm (16 acres) the husband is British, he grew up on a huge farm, he now manages a farm for a wealthy family. They are lovely people but when I helped her decorate her house, I wasnt going for elevated, luxe, refined, sophisticated. I did steer away from cliches, but the same look is not for everyone! Not that people need to be told that.
I love your style, but it's not me. I love antiques and I love florals. I love a splash of color around my basic black, white and beige furniture. People should definitely stick to what they love and if they follow your tips and just adjust them to their likes. They will have a well curated and collected home.
I saw those floral “farmhouse” pillows and thought “oooh where can I get those?” But I’m not offended by her opinions - as she says herself, if you love it, keep it.
I live in an actual farmhouse and it’s actually filled with beautiful antiques. The only farmhouse thing I ever did was put more white accessories in my kitchen
our last house was an actual 1860s farmhouse. small not over the top nods worked there. for example while we did a barn door to save space in one area, it also wasn't over the top reclaimed wood. it was a standard white door with classic clean black finishes. we added a classic modern lines but subtle curved feet white marble vanity that looked both modern and Victorian original in a sense at once (to replace the cutesy very farmhouse vanity from the 70s). I don't have any of those things in our 15 year old home now hardly. I like the other commenter- know style of your home when it was built, your area, and do what is timeless for that.
Y’all say it’s dead, but it’s MUCH ALIVE in our house!!!! It makes our home feel cozy, warm and inviting and everyone that has stepped foot in our home has complemented it and always tell us how nice it is and how cozy it is… This modern movement and organic modern design will faze out in a few years too… I’m sticking to what we love and making our home more like us and inviting for those that we host…
Well she/they probably won't do that because it's not their style or area of expertise. I've never heard her say she has any knowledge of traditional style. My feeling is, just find another designer on youtube to follow you have more in common with. God knows there is a RUclips personality or channel geared towards anything and everything! It's just a matter of finding who's aesthetic fits with yours.
@@lisalee2702 I can't get over the personal attacks on her. Why does she have to change what she likes so she'll be accepted by you? This is actually bullying her because she has a style and sticks to it.
I don’t think asking her to explore a different style is insulting. She’s done great videos featuring other homes of different styles. Check out her sister’s lake house! My home will never look like hers, 40 yrs of collecting things I love! But I’m always eager to watch her and I learn a lot that I can apply to my own decor.
It is never in good taste to come across so crass, especially in criticism of someone’s personal decorum. There are tactful ways to get one’s point across without injecting “goofy” humor. I decorate my cottage in Wales to suit my environment, and due to 260 year old stone walls, a barn door is the only option I have. My home in the states is completely modern, but I actually like the industrial “barn” door I have that closes off my dining room. Need I call out some things you’ve completely missed the mark on? (Huge ball’s flanking your fireplace come to mind.) The only thing spot on in needing to go is the signage, but other than that everything else is completely predilection. Cheers.
I don’t agree with much of Valentina’s approach to decor, but in this instance she is echoing the consensus of every professional designer I’ve heard speak on the subject: The excesses and “cheesiness” of the farmhouse style is in poor taste. The truth is that much of it is over-the-top and downright tacky - and Valentina was exercising a great deal of restraint in not coming straight out and saying so. In the past, I’ve been critical of Valentina for making videos which only nix certain ideas and trends without providing alternatives. Here, Valentina is offering constructive advice to those interested in hearing it. Brava!!! People who don’t like hearing what others think of their decor style choices needn’t watch. I certainly don’t get in a snit and type out angry messages every time a designer pokes fun at something I owned. Sometimes I think people click on these videos for the opportunity to berate designers for downvoting their individual design choice. And I think that’s about as juvenile as a painting of smiling cow hung over the stove.
Wow too many negative comments..... lighten up people. She is just stating what's trending and it doesn't mean you have to follow them if you don't want to. You don't have to watch these videos either for that matter. Geeezzzz
This doesn't seem like the most classy or kind way to help people evolve their styles. The videos showing inspiration photos are very helpful but making fun of people for following a trend seems a little immature. I know it probably wasn't the intent to be rude but it came off that way. It did seem like you tried to soften the comments toward the end but wasn't very enjoyable to watch even though I don't like the farmhouse style. I don't mean to be rude in mentioning this but it could be a turnoff for subscribers trying to elevate their design style.
It is funny how something else is trending now and after a year or so the new video will be out saying how outdated the trend 'xyz' is. I mean it is a freaking house/apartment, not a pair of jeans...consumerism at its finest.
It's always been this way! Comments like this are honestly absurd. Stuff will always come and go. If you don't like it then stop watching trend videos on RUclips. @@neza8628
We live in an old farmhouse - the one I grew up in. Weve always made it our own and for the most part, our style is boho. Remodeling the kitchen finally - it hasnt been completely remodeled since 1970. It's going to be Moroccan and we are reclaiming a piece of wood from our barn to use as shelving. Weve lived here since 1998 so it's been a long wait but worth it. Love your channel Val!!!!❤
This is the very reason I do what I like and I love and watch your channel occasionally because you’re adorable! But you promote the heck out of a style and then it’s out and you start the same thing all over again. Be original and yourselves! Variety is the spice of life!!
I completely agree. Farmhouse was just popular when I first starting my home. I have taken things out one by one, given them to my mom for her garage sale and slowly replace things with a classic clean look. Yea, I did buy a beautiful white classic sofa, Devore like travertine and marble trays or bowls, brass or classic vases similar to the ones you use and have added touches of black through things. The distressed things are gone, the signs are gone, thank goodness. You and Jack have been a great teachers to follow!
Farmhouse decor can be calmed down by the sweet changes you mentioned. I have multiple family/friends who love the cozy comfortable feeling of farmhouse. We all know there are individuals who can do it well. Again, I think of you… you update your home but stay true to your style. Farmhouse, traditional, mid century modern, contemporary, etc. your style will never totally go out. All of us should never go overboard in anyone style. Moderation is the name of the design game. Mid Century Modern for alway! It is modern mid century… key word!
You guys are awesome together. I live in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, however you both help me so much in designing a home that I enjoy, that fits my lifestyle and unique taste. Thanks so much!
I will never get rid of my amazing, large, old teak coffee table that was made in India. I also buy most of my furniture used. RH sofa (2), CB2 area rug, my mcm arched chrome lamp with marble base. Trends come and go, but nothing is more interesting than going into a home that says unique and interesting.
Have you watched their other videos? They're a sweet, stylish couple who loves design and loves sharing with their audience. They infuse humor because this is all meant to be fun.
That sounds beautiful, its the modern homes that have signs hanging around their homes, looks tacky. Love the classic farmhouse design antiques and sofas and done tastefully, not fake signs.
You had mentioned in a video about 3 months ago that you’d be doing a lot more videos on modern cottage. I’d like to know how it differs from modern farmhouse. Thanks!
I like the less is more that you teach its so true I am an impulse shopper and buy lots of random crap that I end up donating months later you taught me that instead of spending my money on junk I can have nice things if I spend my money more wisely
Those black vases are so going to go out of style in no time flat. Besides the fact that they look like water and sewer pipes that have been removed the ground and sawed off. 😜🤣😂
People still gravitate toward those signs. We went to a thrift store and my boyfriend found a little wood sign that said, I’m kinda of a big deal. I laughed to myself as he carried it around. Just before checking out he put it back. He felt good about letting that one go, thank God ❤
Loved seeing Jack again...and the beach jokes. :) Great ideas here for those who leaned in heavily to farmhouse decor, but also for those of us who are working towards an elevated look. Thank you!
We renovated a few years ago during Covid and kept some businesses in business, that being said, I went for a Hamptons style with the blue vases and the blue flowers, but since watching your channel and learning more about decorating, I’ve since changed out just about all the blue stuff I had in my home to more neutral colours and my home looks much better, it didn’t cost me much because I just spray painted most of my vases black and switched out the flowers to branches that some I just cut from the trees in my garden or from the paddock beside us, I went down the path of signs with things written on them but they all got donated when we renovated, I started with a Shabby Chic look, then went Hamptons and now I have a more neutral home and I Love it, not every wall has something on it, I’ve kept things to a minimalist look, and it makes house cleaning so much easier and less clutter around, my husband always hated how much stuff I had on our walls with signs on them, like who doesn’t know where the Bathroom is, you don’t need a sign to tell you that, the same with Laundry, I’m about the only one that goes into the laundry room Lol 😂 and I don’t need a sign to tell me where it is 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️, I loved this video, and I loved how you gave options for people who still love the Farmhouse Look, some of the comments were a little off, I think some thought you were picking Farmhouse to pieces But you did give other options for those, maybe you could of toned down the laughing so much, some people get offended by that if they don’t watch your videos on a regular basis and know you get excited about things, maybe your laugh is a nervous thing, I find your laugh infectious and have implemented so much of your recommendations into my own home and it’s turned out lovely 🥰, So Thank You Guys for sharing your experience and knowledge here on RUclips. 🖤🖤🖤🖤🇦🇺
I’ve painted some of my blue and white vases too. Doing some with gold spray paint and while that’s wet, do a light speckle of matt black paint to create a brass look and then a light gold coat to make it all run. Adds warmth and looks fantastic. Was going to do Hamptons but like you, decided on neutrals. Fellow Aussie surrounded by paddocks too.
@@HappyHarryX5 Hi, I’m not surrounded by paddocks Lol 😂, it’s just council land that we back onto , living in the suburbs but I mow the section of land that is behind our property to keep it clean looking and to try and keep the creepy crawlys away Lol 😂, I did see a snake going along our back fence line one day and that creeped me out, we used to live on property and know what can be hidden in the long grass that’s why we’ve always kept it tidy, can’t rely on council to do it..🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
@@-nellie-m3711 Wish I had the mowing genes! Boy it’s growing at the moment. I’m lucky I only see about one or two snakes a year, it’s mainly bunnies, foxes, and cows everywhere. Being on the edge of town is perfect though.
This was actually helpful and inspiring from a " downsizing" standpoint. And I luv the humor that Jack brings to the videos, with his down to earth approach. This gave me the mindset of what I might Not want to pack and ship across the country in my future move. Thx!🧐
The farmhouse influence helped me to freshen up my more traditional home. I put sisal rugs in my English country design home.. they help it have a high/low feel that is not so stuffy. I couldn’t agree more, however, about the signs, barn doors and you forgot shiplap! I do wonder what enterprises like Magnolia will do as modern farmhouse moves out?
It’s good to be able to laugh about design! At the end of the day, trends are always changing, and people should do what they love. Fun video.. By the way, I have a barn door and love it lol.
"Cottage Style and Masculine/Feminine Balance* . I never jumped on any era of Farm House. I have one piece of word art, it stays. I love cottage style. I leaned in a bit heavy on a shabby chic vibe, after a few years, it felt too busy and overly Feminine. I swapped out some furniture for mid-tone wood, added matte black accents, and shifted the color palette to earthy/moody and eliminated pink. I have muted earthy colors on the wall and oak flooring (which has seen better days) and some tile. Textiles, art and color palette can totally shift the vibe of a space. I'm a 56 yr. old single female. Too much Granny Chic was overwhelming. You will definitely feel a warm and cozy vibe when you enter my home. I learned statement vignettes are far more impactful than bric-a-brac everywhere.
I think the over saturation of so many farm house things made me look for something else. It was just too much. Farmhouse has been in literally every house I walk in. Its in my doctors office, my dentist office…I guess I don’t want want my personal space to look like every thing else. Your channel helps me so much because I’m not sure HOW to upgrade my space. Thank you
Hi Jack & Val! I would love to see a video on light fixtures. I have a rectangular dining table and I’m struggling with picking a fixture. Everything else in the room is rectangular, the walls, the sofa table, the bookcases. How do you land the perfect fixture?
That’s a great question. Off the hip I like to break up the shapes. If everything is rectangular circles or more abstract are nice because they create soft movement in a room of more box like objects.
I love black and white and will always incorporate those colors in my home. Signs with "wash" and "dry" on my washer and dryer... or "soft drinks" sofn in my kitchen-- not in a million years. I lived with white walls for many many years. Now I have gray walls and find it super calming, not depressing. In my family room, it feels cozy with my gray walls, my red sofas and black chairs with a rug that brings it all together. I watch your videos because I enjoy hearing of different viewpoints. It is nice to see the enthusiasm with which you embrace interior and exterior design.
I love your dynamic! You each add the best tips & humor! If possible i would love to see you two take a shopping trip to Ross and point out what you would pick for all the lower budget viewers!
Farmhouse is gorgeous. Modern and only modern is so ugly. Not everyone has ugly signs if they have farmhouse. You both are the sweetest couple. I love your decor because its not ugly modern. Reclaimed wood is gorgeous in moderation.
Yes, reclaimed wood has character and patina. All the money in the world can’t give you that, only time. But not everyone appreciate antiques, patinas and all that go with them. My big fireplace mantel is an amazing original barn beam which I wouldn’t change for anything. But everyone has their own tastes which is what makes the world go round.
Perhaps widen your vocabulary rather than constantly using your channel to push your style. The amount of times you utilized the word refined & sophisticated was painstaking. I agree with some of the other viewers; this isn’t it. Your message was overshadowed by the immature tone of sounding like two school girls making fun of other’s choices simply because it isn’t the sterile, abstract style that you desire in your home.
You two make great videos together. They are informative and humorous! I’m trying to make my home more sophisticated and minimalistic which is why I love your videos. Your ideas on how to gradually incorporate small changes into my home is easy to follow. My home will always be a reflection of me but it’s always helpful to change things around regularly and get rid of the dated items. When I go shopping, I follow your guidelines and am always happier with the end result. Thank you for your awesome videos!😊
It is your home! Decorate it how you want. Pick items you love. That make you smile when you see them. This is how you achieve a curated timeless home 🥰💖
I 100% agree! My rule of thumb…If it looks like Hobby Lobby threw up on your walls that’s your cue to make a change! My cousin now regrets the gray wood look flooring she chose during the farmhouse gray craze, it’s just looks dated already 😕
My friend was about to put gray floors in their home and immediately told her she'd regret it. Then told her why, including the colors and design style she'd be stuck to if she did that. She changed her mind.
Valentina, I am inspired by your videos and have used some of your suggestions along the way in my own home. Though my heart sank a bit with the modern farmhouse bashing in this video because it didn’t feel classy. I don’t have that style in my home but still see it beautifully on display in other homes. No matter the designer trends, I like the home elements that speak comfort to me…wood, stone, natural light, plants, fire places and cozy spaces. I am still embracing some gray because I find it soothing and a nice backdrop, but I also love white and beige. The color gray doesn’t depress me but what can really depress me is too much clutter and a lack of light (either natural or beautiful interior lighting)! I believe gray, white, and beige can compliment any room with a coordinated plan of lighting, furniture, and accessories. That’s why I watch designers on RUclips, to learn more about pulling a look together. My home style has always been closest to cottage and (haha) includes a set of barn doors that I designed 18 years ago. I still love them and receive compliments often. Your video on modern cottage a while back had me so excited! I think that might be my style and I am looking forward to learning more about it from the House of Valentina! 😊
I love the modern farmhouse style. When I was young I loved watching Chip and Joana gains. It was my dream to own a modern farmhouse. I will still decorate what I love, now that I have my own house and did a lot of expensive renovations to get the farmhouse look.
I did farmhouse for awhile and it can quickly become a cluttered mess and look like a hobby lobby store!. Going more modern and streamlined and it is so much more relaxing for the mind to have less stuff to look at. Great video!
Not long ago, I helped my cousins clean out their mother's home that was chock full of farmhouse things. We had to go to 3 different consignment shops to get rid of the furniture because 2 of the shops said they had too much that wasn't even selling! At the 3rd shop we tried, they said they'd take the things but said they'd be pricing it quite low. For instance - a large rustic coffee table that she paid almost $2,000 for and was in perfect condition was priced by the consignment shop for only $200 😳 and as far as I've heard, its been 3 months and it still hasn't sold. 🤷♀️ And that was the nicest piece she had! Needless to say in the end, my cousins probably should've just let an auction/estate reseller company take it all for a lump sum or had an auction but they didn't. Many people (like my cousins) just don't pay attention to style or resale value and they end up shocked to learn how little they will actually get for a house full of trends - especially when the trend is O.V.E.R ! I think its a good lesson and one to apply everytime BEFORE you buy pricey furniture or decor. Its much better to buy timeless pieces that don't look like a certain trend or decade.
A number of styles can be "ELEVATED" by simply attending to proportion/ scale/texture/function whether items are ultra-modern or more vintage! Also as one's style/life evolves, it's important to assess/re-assess the "VOLUME" of things one prefers to live with. For a "Minimalist" the volume will be low; while a "Maximalist" at heart may abide more "controlled chaos". To equate Modern Farmhouse with canning jars/ burlap/barn-doors/ & Abundant (HollyLobbyish)Signage seems a bit of a dismissive over-simplication as many humble items can be displayed with flare... as Joanna Gaines did in many of her farmhouse renditions (with their minimalist leanings). It is simply not true that an "ELEVATED" style is ONLY some minor adaptation of Minimalist Modern ( in mostly neutral colors)...though that may be one's PREFERENCE!
While we were building our house we were thinking "farmhouse" in general, but with a more Florida/Spanish/industrial detail. Since moving in four years ago, we've leaned more into the rustic industrial with a bit of tropical (think Florida, Flagler Railroad, Ybor City). I think the difference is that if you love the look of something, then it's not a trend to you. Every time we saw farmhouse-y styles that everyone was doing, we didn't want it. We finally realized that we were only going for farmhouse because that was what was popular. With a little more searching and education, we found out what we really liked and for us it's pretty timeless!
I think the essence of Modern Farmhouse is that 50% of the population lives in non urban settings where it is appropriate. Additionally, there is an element of a "homey" feelings that at the age most people can afford renovations, they want to relive their childhood and impart their childhood to their children. I think that is why Modern Traditional is really taking off in recent years with the art work that is now trendy (WHO saw moody pastorals and gothic landscapes being the thing the young people want) and wall paneling, museum lighting, etc
Love this! Do you have a video or could you pleeease make One on how to style Window/sills? And also like TV-rooms? I feel like people never showcase those parts of their home on instagram and Pinterest 😅 and I’m in serious need of inspo!❤
Farmhouse feels comfortable to me. I'm not a socialite. I'm an everyday kind of person. When I come into a farmhouse decorated home, I don't feel like I'm going to break something. I never really got into the signs or barn doors, but then I never really got into all the white paint either. I maybe too practical. White gets dirty. I do love the rustic feel of farmhouse though.
As a realtor, I see the modern farmhouse trend still extremely relevant. I find about 90% of my buyers are looking for something that falls within this trend, regardless of price. Personally, I'm ready to see something different.
It depends on the area. Some towns already years behind the trend and so the tastes of older generation too. I don't expect anyone old enough to buy is into dopamine decor ATM haha
Seriously, as long as this video is full of humor….those vases look like sewer pipes if you look closely. Sorry. Couldn’t resist. I live in an 1800s farmhouse, not a modern farmhouse. So velvet pillows would not look well on our cream couch and with our antiques which will never go out of style for everyone. It’s a matter of personal choice. City people love the latest modern designs. But those change all the time too. We are 4+ hours north of NYC and if you actually knew the number of people who are up here on vacation, weekends, etc…who stop by and say they would die to own our home with its acreage, original barn, stone walls, wrap around porch, etc…. So as I see it lots of people want what they don’t have. It is not practical at all to continually be looking and spending to keep up with the latest perceived trend. Find what you love and do you. It’s also not polite to laugh and poke fun at people who live differently than you do. It’s a big world with room for all of us to live with respect toward others.
@@Mtnmamma5251 An 1800's farmhouse? Sounds absolutely gorgeous - would love to be able to show/sell something with so much character. Hope you love there happily for many years!
I do live in a modern farmhouse style home but I have kept the furniture classic and minimal. I have always disliked signs and barn doors, thank god! I don't like rules so I have kept the furniture from our earlier home yet I get asked if I had a piece or two made for this home so I hope that's a sign that they work. Love watching the two of you together. You are both great and adorable. Love to watch and learn from your impeccable taste. Thanks for the great video!
Everyone's house decor is looking "cut and paste", farmhouse or not. Lol. Need more creativity and originality. If one shops at the top 10 RUclips decor inspo stores, then unfortunately it's all tired. With that said , it really is what you like regardless of "trend".
Thanks for the video. I do agree with letting the signs and some of the things you talked about but there are still a lot of channels that are saying farmhouse is still in. I guess more modern farm house. I love shiplap and it would be expensive to change so it stays. I guess it's all about what you like. I love a mix of modern and farmhouse.
My sister-in-law and I love your channel. My house is surrounded by very large trees and my interiors do not get a lot of direct sunlight. Plus, I have a brown thumb. Where is the best place to get large potted trees?
Hi Valentina 👋🏼Thank you for your constant encouragement for us to have a better looking and beautiful luxurious house. I’m getting rid of ALL my rustic signs 😅 around the house my walls now are empty 😱
This is so true and funny, i laugh true the whole video and i couldn't agree more, i live in Norway and I like classic modern , vintage, organic and cozy.
I was listening pretty carefully and I don’t think that’s what she was saying. It’s those cheap *modern* rugs that are *made to look as though they’re old, worn and faded* - the ones supposed to give that cozy, “lived in” vibe which Valentina is suggesting need to go. I’ve been in the market for a new bedroom rug for a while now and it’s been extremely frustrating: almost all new, patterned rugs have that kind of mottled, uneven look to them. Some (if not most) are designed to appear they’ve worn unevenly - as when one corner is much lighter than the rest of the rug. At a distance they might look like a worn vintage rug, but up close they just look cheap, weird - and certainly not elevated, elegant or tasteful. Regardless, please remember that just because something is vintage doesn’t mean it’s of good quality or worth saving.🤷🏻♀️
If you love farmhouse keep it we are all different with different styles everyone is not into black and white afraid of color, do what causes you to smile when you walk in your home, everyone is not the Adams family, luv my pillow says God Is because He is my al and all
My taste is not farmhouse but I don't sit and laugh and make fun of those who do. Some of us plain and ordinary people feel very inadaquite after watching
You shouldn't feel inadequate. Just because someone else has an opinion doesn't mean you have no value. They're designers and this is what they do. Normally designers charge a lot of money for their expertise, and this couple shares their's each week for free.
I started to think that way, and then I realized this is all in fun and they sometimes admit that even they loved some of trends of the past that are now “outdated”. It’s all for entertainment and escapism. Enjoy what you love, take what they say as suggestions, but remember they wouldn’t want you to make your home to please them. I have warm gray all over my house and I still love it! Make your space your own and let it evolve as YOU like! 😊
@cherylnickell1628 don’t let anyone make you feel inadequate. I like watching this for some ideas but I don’t like all and definitely don’t do trends. Lately she does have a very strong opinion & acts like it’s fact. She constantly laughs at herself when nothings funny so I’m thinking she’s not laughing at or making fun of them, but just her thinking she’s funny. Sweet Jack just does what she says. Regardless if you feel plain & ordinary, you are extraordinary in God’s eyes. Doesn’t matter what your house is like, if you have love, it’s a home! 💕
Superb video. I so loved the banter between you guys. Y'all are hilarious. So nice to see the hubby be involved and understand decorating. I would love to see a video about decorating for specific styles of homes besides farmhouses...lol. Also, where do you draw the line of just enough and not too much stuff. I was almost about to be sad when you said no more farm doors....we just bought a new home and the in-law suite is separated from the rest of the house with a sliding door. Was glad to hear that they are great as long as it doesn't look like a barn door which mine doesn't. My new home has rooms where the ceilings are painted the same color as the walls. Is that still a thing? The colors are nice, but a bit dark. My home is a lightish gray brick ranch that was built in 2017...an upper scale home. Just wondering if I should paint all the rooms white and should you put up curtains even tho there are beautiful white wood blinds? Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Will definitely check out your amazon store for those rugs.
I love your home and style. I purchased a sectional light cream fabric low profile and square arms. I hope I am ok lol 😂. My layout is very weird and I am struggling with it. Thanks for all the inspiration!
I live in a modern style home and we have sliding spa doors with frosted glass. I love them. They are beautiful. If you have a barn door switch it to a spa door. I do have a gray couch, but it’s gray and cream and I’m keeping it and bringing in more cream and taupe. I love your house and I never thought of it as modern farmhouse. I did not follow the modern farmhouse because my home is modern. Whew… thank goodness 😅
I enjoyed this video even though I love color. We use shades of blue and green that flow from one room to another in a very open floor plan. And it works for us. I AM going straight to my living room and editing out a few things that aren’t adding anything to the room, going for a more restful (yet colorful) look. I enjoy your channel even though our approaches are very different. I’ve learned a lot, thank you!
Did they destroy all the old farmhouses in America? I can tell it’s not your style, but it is still loved by many. I don’t like vintage, but soooo many love it. To each decorator, it’s your home, you live there. If it makes you smile when you come home, keep it! Our homes reflect us, the things we love, a style we love, and that is our own decision. My 92 year old mother loves her ugly floral couch. Yuck, but it makes her happy. So be it! Enjoy your home mom!
Ive never really been into the farmhouse look but theres a few elements I found attractive. Every design style has/had something unique about it....thats how they all became so famous..especially the one you two love to make so much fun of 🤔
We live in the country. People pay farmers for the old wood on their working barns/outbuildings and they replace it with brand new wood. It's a win win for both, I guess. Still feel a bit sad to see all these vintage barns looking like they were built yesterday. Takes about 5 years before they are stripped again. Maybe now that will stop.
Home decorating is self expression...and what makes you happy. Farmhouse can really be comfortable and inviting. I myself like eclectic collections with a bohemian slant. Enjoy yourself and your home.
The reality is style changes. Joanna Gaines created the farmhouse look and at the time we all loved it! Whether we lived in a farmhouse or not we wanted to capture a few elements of her incredible style! The movement was huge! And her influence lingers to this day…..Those of us that don’t live on a farm have probably moved on… to become inspired by other design styles that better suit our lifestyle and personality.
I love farmhouse style! My husband is a farmer, but we live in a city. It was a small town when he was growing up, but it is now a city. I want our cookie cutter home to represent our lives. The farmhouse style is perfect for me! I am bothered that designers keep saying the style is out suddenly. Why? Suddenly it is out when last year it was not out?
My new toxic trait is, not allowing anything you hate in my place now 😂 I recently found your Channel and I’m remodeling my entire apartment, my daughter says she hates the new me cause now everything is “no! Valentina says that’s a no no” 😂 I’m so excited about the outcome I even purchased your exact wall colors 😩
LOL
Re: Dismay over current interior design styles being trendy/temporary/meaningless:
I think the word you're looking for is “kitchy” - a tacky, almost cartoonish object alluding to a certain aesthetic without actually being of the genre.
For example, pictures of the Eiffel Tower, a “Paris” sign, printed pillows saying, “Vivre la France” and a metal bucket embossed with the word “Fleurs.”
This kind of questionable taste used to be confined to the kitchen, where daisies, ducks, roosters and livestock have dwelled for decades.
Lovely
Agreed. I have a small farm and I don't have those things because my house is too small for that. I just kept it simple and it's a lot less work.
Agreed! What makes them experts? and it's just and excuse to get people to redo everything and spend money.
I don’t like modern either, but I think people will be shifting away from farmhouse to traditional. Just my opinion
What happens when you live in a farmhouse on an actual farm built in 1860. Ima stick w true farmhouse style 😅
I don’t think anything is dead. Do what you love.
Oh I don't know. Some of those signs look ridiculously cheap and unimaginative
Would be really boring if everyone had same style. Like those ugly grey plastic fake wood floors everyone is putting in.
I don’t associate florals or plaids with farmhouse. Ralph Lauren is a timeless example of this.
Gingham check.
Picnic blanket plaid is a farmhouse plaid
The post-modern style vases you showed won’t have lasting power IMHO. Unattractive, people will wonder What was I thinking?
Practical advice for fake “farmhouse” in suburbs
I love your style, but it's not me. I love antiques and I love florals. I love a splash of color around my basic black, white and beige furniture. People should definitely stick to what they love and if they follow your tips and just adjust them to their likes. They will have a well curated and collected home.
I agree. Do what you love. The goal is a curated home not a trend.
I love that!
our last house was an actual 1860s farmhouse. small not over the top nods worked there. for example while we did a barn door to save space in one area, it also wasn't over the top reclaimed wood. it was a standard white door with classic clean black finishes. we added a classic modern lines but subtle curved feet white marble vanity that looked both modern and Victorian original in a sense at once (to replace the cutesy very farmhouse vanity from the 70s).
Happy to see Jack back in the videos!! He makes me laugh! ❤
Thanks! He loves hanging out also!
I agree I like Jack.
I’d love to see a video on a more traditional style home that encompasses light and bright with a touch of the modern
Yep, that'll be great to see
Well she/they probably won't do that because it's not their style or area of expertise.
@@NatalieAlverez i totally agree!. If you don't like her style look for another designer. I personally love ! her style!
My highlight of the day when I see these type of videos from you!! .. you two together are a blast!! Love it!❤
Thank you so much!
(Huge ball’s flanking your fireplace come to mind.)
The only thing spot on in needing to go is the signage, but other than that everything else is completely predilection.
Geeezzzz
I agree
Exactly! No point in acting like farmhouse is beneath you! I love Farmhouse style that my friends have!
Modern farmhouse isn't farmhouse which has signs everywhere. They're discussing farmhouse not modern farmhouse.
@@neza8628
Agreed 💯
It’s really not that serious.
Well stated
It's now what you said, it's how you said it. You might consider being more respectful of your viewers, and not making fun of them.
Have you watched their other videos? They're a sweet, stylish couple who loves design and loves sharing with their audience. They infuse humor because this is all meant to be fun.
Nothing was said about viewers; it was commentary on design trends and changing styles in the general population.
You have been disrespectful of your viewers in this video.
OMG, Jack was hilarious in this video. I'm with Jack, put the barn doors back on the barns...😂😂😂
Thought of the movie When Harry met Sally and they were arguing over the Roy Rogers wagon wheel coffee table, lol
Out it went!!
AMEN Jack! I've said this from the start! Why would someone want to live in a barn?
I love in an actual farmhouse. We decorate aroundbthe "character" of this 130 year old home. Very cozy. No signs ever.
I love that and it sounds beautiful!
I’m waiting for the segment on the modern cottage
that you said was going to be style. Love to see what items I can decorate my house with. Thank you
Those black vases are so going to go out of style in no time flat. Besides the fact that they look like water and sewer pipes that have been removed the ground and sawed off. 😜🤣😂
Water sewage pipes…I am dying🤣🤣🤣
People still gravitate toward those signs. We went to a thrift store and my boyfriend found a little wood sign that said, I’m kinda of a big deal. I laughed to myself as he carried it around. Just before checking out he put it back. He felt good about letting that one go, thank God ❤
Ha, that sounds like something Jack would do also!
I think everyone thinks different, do whatever you like . Not every one can change their stuff like you do every other week. So each to their own .
You sound like mean girls…..but I know your heart is in a good place
I love that you enjoy Jack’s humor!! Such a happy couple ❤
If you have no plans to sell your home and are planning to live there for quit sometime, why not have what you want, whether in style or not.
That's a great question. Why are you watching a video like this if you're happy with what you have?
Loved seeing Jack again...and the beach jokes. :) Great ideas here for those who leaned in heavily to farmhouse decor, but also for those of us who are working towards an elevated look. Thank you!
Thanks Christine!
They are doing more earthy sculptural pieces now, so even their design is evolving.
It’s good to be able to laugh about design! At the end of the day, trends are always changing, and people should do what they love. Fun video.. By the way, I have a barn door and love it lol.
Glad to see Jack back. He is a cool dude👍🏼💖
Thanks!
That sounds beautiful!
Omg 😂🤣🤣I'm just at the burlap comments following the barn door i am in tears laughing, you two are so much fun. Ok back to the video 🤣❤
Ha, that’s awesome!
That was so helpful & inspiring since i am at the beginning of decorating my own home. Thank-you for your wonderful tips & insight 😊❤
Thank you
I agree with you, it isn’t that certain elements of farmhouse are inherently bad or ugly, it’s just that they were absolutely EVERYWHERE.
@@jennifergraham3752Yes, but certain elements are inherently bad and ugly.
An oval sofa table and/or dining table could also be a way to brake up the boxiness.
You two are absolutely adorable together ... love the laughter ...
😊 thank you
I love your dynamic!
Totally agree on the reclaimed wood!
Thank you so much, for all the beauty and joy, knowledge and hope you bring in to my life! You heal my soul!God bless you!
I’m with Jack - barn doors are for barns! Now a beautiful classic style pocket door is a great alternative. 🙋🏼♀️🇨🇦
Came here to say this. All the benefits of a barn door without any of the downsides.
😂🤣😂 In my area, it’s TJ Maxx throwing up. Tell your cousin to lean into warm tones to counteract the grey, such as in rugs, pillows, wood accents.
“that burlap your wearing.” 😂
A number of styles can be "ELEVATED" by simply attending to proportion/
scale/texture/function whether items are ultra-modern or more vintage!
Also as one's style/life evolves, it's important to assess/re-assess the "VOLUME" of things one prefers to live with. For a "Minimalist" the volume will be low; while a "Maximalist" at heart may abide more "controlled chaos".
To equate Modern Farmhouse with canning jars/ burlap/barn-doors/
& Abundant (HollyLobbyish)Signage seems a bit of a dismissive over-simplication as many
humble items can be displayed with flare...
as Joanna Gaines did in many of her farmhouse
renditions (with their minimalist leanings).
@@AC-gx2nj Thank you for your kind comment.
I love the nickel silvery finishes not black pulls or gold, I’d love to hear about silver finishes with pulls, lighting and faucets!
dead too 😂
I love how Jack look at Valentina. 🥰 Gushing over for you two.
Those modern bubble vases and giant spheres etc. will look just as cliche and dated soon. I think the modern trends are just as bad.
I like listening to opinions on this channel- I just wish the videos were a little more polished. Less hysterical laughing.
Rude!
@@NatalieAlverezno, just honest!
Actually it's just rude. You're not insulting their couch or pillow choice, it's a personal attack. @@lidarandolph8322
Agree
I agree. Way too much laughing. Not everything is funny and it wastes so much time.
Fun video! Thanks, V and Jack!
Glad you enjoyed it!
My sister-in-law and I love your channel. My house is surrounded by very large trees and my interiors do not get a lot of direct sunlight. Plus, I have a brown thumb. Where is the best place to get large potted trees?
Good video! Love Jack’s sense of humor 🤣
Thank you so much!
This video was funny!!! Thank you for the laughter!! Greetings to both from Arizona.
Hi Valentina 👋🏼Thank you for your constant encouragement for us to have a better looking and beautiful luxurious house. I’m getting rid of ALL my rustic signs 😅 around the house my walls now are empty 😱
Just love you guys! You are an inspiration to us.
Thank you Rita!
This is so true and funny, i laugh true the whole video and i couldn't agree more, i live in Norway and I like classic modern , vintage, organic and cozy.
Give up a vintage rug for an Amazon rug… you must be kidding
If you love farmhouse keep it we are all different with different styles everyone is not into black and white afraid of color, do what causes you to smile when you walk in your home, everyone is not the Adams family, luv my pillow says God Is because He is my al and all
Great way to be positive about an outgoing trend! Glad Jack is back, love the banter between the two of you.❤
Love your duo videos Valentina and Jack!
Did anyone tell Kirkland’s that we are moving on from “Farmhouse.”
So true!
You guys make a great team.
Jack is hilarious!
I love your videos. I am extra excited when it's you and Jack! Your chemistry together is the best!
Every design style has/had something unique about it....thats how they all became so famous..especially the one you two love to make so much fun of 🤔
Love your style and fashion style. Keep up the great work
Thanks so much!
Love this Valentina and Jack! Always enjoy your videos! So over the farmhouse decor and Signs...ugh! Love your style!
I'm glad I did pocket door instead of barn. More classic. The function is good
OMG! No more signs. Now I don't know where to go or what to do inside.😂😂😂
So true!
Exactly! Do I live? Do I laugh? Maybe love? How is a person to know?!? 😂😉
Omg I can’t keep up. Just got my ‘farm house’ kitchen together- lol 😂
