I only buy the "food grade" DE. I use it 2-3 times a year in their feed to worm them. I use it 3-4 times per year in their coop, nest boxes, run, roosts and in the area where they give themselves dust baths. It helps to kill mites etc. And its safe to continue eating the eggs because its the food grade type!!
I am just planning to run coop next year perhaps and to start from buying 6 tiny chicks but I am learning 1st and your channel and energy you have is best source for me. I wanna take care of my chicks as if they were my babies heh I love how much caring you gives to them and respect ♥♥
Wow, wished I had found you years back. Have had chickens for little over a year, just been winging it. Seriously. My farmer grandparents didn't find it necessary to teach us these things. We were city dwellers tho and only had cat and a dog. Grateful for this most helpful information and education. ❤❤❤
Natural is always good. I never treated my chickens for worms before. They didn't get sick til 14, 15 yrs old, the day before dying. I had very fit wild neighborhood chickens from decades of living on the streets. (I recommend hearty street chickens, heinz 57s, over fancy breeds. Now I have rescues so ill try the DE as a preventative. I assume this clears gastrointestinal parasites only, but not others like adult gapeworm, lungworm...etc
My mom was saying I should also powder spray this on the grass to prevent unwanted bugs and it's 100% safe for animals instead of using chemicals to treat the same grass that the chickens and my pets are using. Thanks!
Thank you so much... I don't like to see my poor chicken sick.. And feel like I can't help my beautiful chicken...because where I live there is no vet to treat chickens.. So I'm very glad you share this tip..
Thank you Becky. The tips are awesome. I want a few hens for eggs. Cackle hatchery has “chocolate eggers” they have bred. I plan having a few and keeping them on our flower farm.
you're like a homesteading angel! I was just looking at chemical dewormers and then you tell me this and I already have diatomaceous earth for my garden so this is awesome and you have to get the correct kind which is food-grade diatomaceous earth!
Bloody fantastic video Becky! Thank you for the great advice! One of my chooks was sick and i mixed some DE in with her food and the next day she bounced back! I even put some under her feathers for mites etc. Thanks so much for sharing! Regards from Australia. Subbed.
Lol. So funny. I love you. Your so great. I am just like you. When I find something that benefits and works great I share with everyone. Because I feel like they should know. If we all know everything is better. Your dog is so cute and funny. Take care. And thank you for all of your help.
Its also good to use food grade in their dust bath since they peck at it. Since i have spread a little around the dry ground. I never see mites anymore.
thankyou what good advise i use diamaceous earth to dust the hen house each clean out no sign of red mite but will now follow your worming advise dave from uk
Lots of good info. I have two hens that have stopped laying and I don't know if it is because it is hot or what but I will give them more protein and I have to get some grit tomorrow.
Worms also gives you a sign that the aria is not clean since the they poop ou the eggs that goes in the grass or feed and then another eats it and that Is how they spread
Question do you keep the DE away from your pig? I have my pig in the same yard as my chicken's. Pig is only outside some of the time inside the rest. I want to deform all of them but hv been told DE is dangerous for pigs?
Hey I know it's been a couple months but I hope your hen is OK I too have a pet hen I've raised her since she was just a little egg She means a lot to me so I understand how you feel Hope all is well.
@@doodmaam7962 my poor rooster is getting ill with I think worms because his comb is going pale and he’s becoming more aggressive towards my family probably because of the stress
I had not idea you could use DE in the feed! I use it in the coop against mites. I did not know I had to worm chickens - they look good but are not laying. I will chick it's the best food grade type; thank you for this Becky!
DE won't do anything for internal parasites. We have tried this and still give them DE in feed but we still have problems from time to time!!!! DE works well for external parasites and is great for micronutrient uptake!!!
It is also natural to the enzimes help to destroy the worms or you can by medicated feed that is treated to destroy the worms like the one that burrows in the gut and is common I unclean brooding containers for the chicks often so they don’t get that parasite
I don't know what it is about chicken feed and dogs, but they love it, LOL. My neighbor's lab came over and just started gobbling right out of the bucket as I tried to feed, LOL.
Hello Becky, I have ten hens. I put a cup of DE in a 5 gallon bucket feed. Probably 20lb of food. Now I see your video and seems you like it 4 times more concentrated. But, how many chickens can be treated with 5lbs of food? It cant be the same for 4 than for 20. Right? Thanks.
I use DE on my dogs for ticks and fleas (said to be good for worms as well) but its a special mix for dogs only, not food grade and it gets kind of rough on my hands as well as their coats. Will try out the food grade variety next time. Also, I'm learning from you about chickens getting these vectors as well and am now a little worried about it since keeping my dogs clean is a tough task in itself. During the tick season my house gets infested and I've even lost a couple of puppies because of tick fever.
Hello Becky, I am confused your blog states this recipe for chicken food,This is how much DE I use for each animal: 1/2 cup for a 40lb bag of cat or dog food. 1 cup for a 50lb bag of horse food. 1/2 cup for a 50lb bag of chicken food. But this video says 1 cup for 5lbs of chicken feed, Which amount should I use monthly? Thank you.
My hens wouldn’t eat their food when I did this. They like their food wetted down some. Is it still effective if I wet their food with the DE in it? Thank you!!
Thank you Becky!! Can you please tell me..... How many cups of crumble chicken feed does it take to equal 5 pounds? My estimate ( from on-line researching) would be 15 cups. Is that correct?
I mix Diatomacious earth into their food all the time. We are hardly getting any eggs and the ones were do get are covered in tons of crap. Whatever they have, this isn't helping
Can you help me understand the huge divide with using DE? Some swear by it, and others say it killed all their chickens and it's very dangerous for their respiratory systems. I've used it in the past, but after losing a chicken to respiratory issues, I'm very nervous now to use anything that could be potentially unsafe for their respiratory systems. Thank you!
Hi, I was wondering do you give horses the diatamacious earth also, if so how do you administer it to horses, in there water?, thanks for your help, love your site, I always learn something new🤗
I’m pretty sure it’d just sink to the bottom of the watering bucket ( because it says on the package you have to reapply to PLANTS/foliage after rainfall) so...I’d do like Becky does and find a way to incorporate the de into the horse feed :)
Hi Becky! I was wanting to know - you said don’t do this until they are 2 months old- but what do you do during that 8 week period to keep them worn free?
so the egg shouldnt have poop on it? should the egg be completely clean? what if there is blood or something on the egg? should i bathe my chickens? if so how do i bathe them and how often should i bathe them?

It means someone up there thinks that you would enjoy having your own chickens
You will have chickens in the future.
