As for the whole 'wife's family' thing... as I'm sure you've figured out by now, I tend to look at things a little differently, and in my humble opinion, any time any of us does something 'wrong', or something that upsets or offends someone, its best to just fess up and move on. That said, if you were indeed saying negative things about her family, I'm assuming you had negative feelings about her family, and you're entitled to air your views. But overall, yes, just admitting to your 'error' is the best way to move on.
