You can’t put screws into the plank itself. That’s why there are clips so plank can move, even one screw anywhere in the plank will make it buckle. You should still put screw into the clip even at the joints! Rookies.

I agree with your assessment however Longboard themselves suggest piercing the flange as the manufacturer
