I personally think that AH is the ultimate theme i want to bring to the table but it is just never going to happen in my gamer group but I am glad Elder Sign came out, although I still wouldn't say the hype is as much compare to AH but the strategy is there and I want to point them out! Choosing the location/ Adventure can be very tactical, because each character has an ability/ carry some item that give them advantage for this specific round or even this very turn. On the other hand, you need to discuss with the team who wants to tackle the more dangerous event if you are not gonna do it yourself. I think this is truly the beauty of this game, you take on a role as a heroic investigator with some ability but most of the time you are just an useless human against all the odds, so the best way to survive in the apocalypse is man up and give all you got and go all or nothing on a mission you were sign up for. It's lots of luck but it can be blended in the theme
A good review-- and now that there are expansions for this, there's even more reason to seriously consider it. You'd never get me or any of my game group to play Arkham Horror OR Twilight Imperium, no matter how great they are theme wise or otherwise, because they're just too darn long. We'd much rather play three rounds of a shorter game than any of those, if we have the time to spend but much of the time we only have a couple of hours before we burnout anyway so we won't touch anything rated over about 90 mins with a 10-ft pole. And about 45-60 minutes is the sweet spot for us-- long enough for some level of complexity, but not so long as to tire of it. The absolute worst is a long game with a lot of luck involved where you can figure out you're losing within about 20 minutes and then be stuck there for the next couple of hours. At that point it's time to overturn the table...
I've never played either Elder Sign or Arkham Horror but I can tell you if I had to choose it would be Elder Sign. They hit on the fact that it's a much lighter, faster game and in my gaming groups that's going to win every time. Gone are the days of 5 hour Conquest of the Empire games. Now a days it's King of Tokyo more often than not :P this seems "similar" in that it's a Yahtzee/Dice game and to be quite frank: those are just damn good games to throw together on a Friday or Saturday night. Screw Arkham Horror...if this game is as good as King of Tokyo then I'm in!
Rye Sher a really good coop game is Pandemic. Forbidden Island/desert is pretty good also. Both can be pretty short. Give either of those a to y if you haven't already!
I really enjoy this game, I found playing with 1 other person (so 2) was the best way to play or even by yourself if you need to kill an hour. With 2 people its fairly difficult with almost a 50/50 chance depending on the ancient one you pull.
@walt776 I agree...most people who talk down Lovecraft have actually NEVER read anything from him. lol, the fact he says that Call of Cthulhu was a book series also makes me think he actually didnt read anything from him at all.
Tom as an Ipad user try buying FFG's Arkham Horror app it takes a fraction to setup AH and plays so well. Before I played AH only twice a year now we play it about once every 2 months. Lovecraft is not "dried than dirt" for that we have plenty underworld romance novels.
I had a chance to try this out last night, though I wasn't overly keen because it was a large group and I have heard that this game is a bit boring because of downtime. We played two games, won both. I got to roll the dice four times is total. I mean I had four turns. I don't know, maybe it was getting late, but I found it not really engaging at all, though I didn't show my displeasure because all the other players were having a great time. Maybe with fewer number of players I would give it a go again but it's not a buy for me, and it looked very easy as well, no challenge whatsoever...
i agree its a bit easy but i tried the version where you get one doom token every time when clock strikes midnight and its much more tense and complicated.
This is a fun game, yes it may be a little too easy, but it is a game that my wife and I can play without every one rage quitting. I can pull it strait out of the box and explain it while setting it up and everyone can play. It is one for a different twist in which you are fighting the game, everyone wins or everyone loses. If it were not for the theme, I could easily play this with the kids in my family. I may just design a game with the same mechanic but with a more kid friendly theme.
Not my favorite game in my collection but it's the one that gets played the most for some reason. Everyone seems to enjoy their first try A LOT and it is always a loud experience. My gf loves it and my sister too, I kinda feel like it has some faults that don't affect the fun factor but after a while one wonders why no one spends the currency on allies or does stuff at the entrance board. Death is irrelevant unless you are fighting an awakened ancient and there really is no difference between sanity and health.
I got this game not too long ago. Everyone hates it, no one can stand it. The closest we came to winning was getting ONE Elder Sign out of a needed 10 before the Old One awoke. Notoriously difficult with zero hope of winning, we had several people die before midnight struck even once.
"The mythos is pretty popular, there's a lot of movies" I'm guessing this is a different timeline than mine. Especially in 2011! In board games there's a ton, sure. And in video games we're getting a bit more nowadays. But movies?!
@@Krano229 And it's a quite good one. But can you think of a couple of good Lovecraftian movies from before 2011? Best I can think of is some slightly inspired by HP like Event Horizon or The Thing. Even then it's not enough to be a handful, let alone "lot of". Even googling it right now only shows up b-movies or school projects.
I play with 4 others and our games last an average of an hour... I thoroughly enjoy the game and although it may be easy with 5 players, it's simple to add some variation to make it much harder. And it's probably a good 'gateway' game into the Cthulhu mythos too
Good review, though I will disagree with your statement about less people making the game easier. I have played 3 two-player sessions, and the game was so easy that we weren't even close to losing. There really isn't any challenge at all, which is a shame because it's a fun game.
@Tapewormz Then you shouldn't make shit comments. Do you know how much money they got, per word, for the stories written? Do you know where the stories were originally published? No, not without googling it you don't. He died poor because of the industry. He was actually popular at the time and inspired more people today than any other horror/suspense writer outside of Poe. Not like Lovecraft is fine, but saying he died poor because his writing style shows only ignorance on the subject.
@Sammo212 I was speaking more in terms of the hobbit vs the lord of the rings. The hobbit being easier to pick up, read and enjoy than the lord of the rings which sort of just drones on, gets really slow in spots...but elitists are going to be elitists right?
@Sammo212 Yeah, it's a book written for children, but enjoyed by both children and adults.I've read many of Lovecrafts stories and they're dry. That's my opinion, and it's a popular one. It's the reason he died poor. That being said, he created a very fascinating mythos that lives on in the work of other writers and artists. It's obvious that his legacy is more successful than his actual writing. He had good stories, but was a poor storyteller. Anyways, I'm tired of discussing this.
@Sammo212 Well it's good that you enjoy it. By hard to read I didn't mean it was over my head. I meant that it's just too boring, and dry. I really enjoy Lovecraftian horror, just not the work of H.P. Lovecraft himself. I respect it, I just don't enjoy reading it. Take the lord of the rings. It's a boring read for a lot of fans, but they still enjoy the mythos and related works.
because I like the cthulhu mythos, but AH is really slow. AH is less of a co-op game and more of a game that you and your friends are not fighting each other. In ES, it is easier to win when you actually work together
I disagree with Tom, this feels EXACTLY like Yahtzee...with monsters. And no it does NOT take a fraction of the time. This game still takes 2+ HOURS! The easiest monster to kill still needs 10 elder signs. We had 4 investigators die before even getting 5 signs last time. If you are going to sink 2 hours into a game you might as well go all the way and play a game of Arkham Horror. This game has all the Lovecraft drained from Arkham. I never once felt like an investigator while playing. Also, the clock thing is annoying as hell. We were constantly forgetting to move it and why does it have 12 numbers if you only use 4 of them. This game was DOA in my group.
You are describing all the things that are fixed and do work in Eldritch Horror, if you haven't already gotten that one, upgrade to that instead. They have only 4 symbols, it takes 3 hours, We only had one person die twice and only near the end, we won against the guy who kills upon arrival. A friend gave me this game for free, and I haven't played it yet, but you are discouraging me to do so. I have played Arkham Horror and we lost, I wouldn't recommend that over Eldritch, that is the way to go.
Yes, this game can easily take 1 hour to play, solo. Sometimes, more. I shudder to think how long the expansions would be. Still, a super fun game, but it will take some time.
Finally! Someone talking sense. I've been scrolling for ages seeing all the positive comments about this game and I was thinking I must have played it wrong or something because (solo) it took me over 2hrs to complete my 1st session. After 3 or 4 more sessions - died in all of them - it still takes me around 2 hrs. I agree, you never feel you're investigating anything or doing anything else but this: 1 - look at dice picture in a location card 2 - roll dice and hope they match with the dice in the location card Over, and over, and over. Rill dice, do they match the pic? No, roll again, but with a die less. Still no match? Roll again, but take another die out so you'll have EVEN less chances every time you fail. It's just so mind-numbing, it's incredible. What a waste of $. :(
I have both, and Mansions of Madness, and play Elder Signs more although I like Arkham Horror better. The problem is that Arkham Horror is such a PITA to get to the table because the setup is so annoying and it's such a long game
@Tapewormz I am a Lovecraft fan and I disagree with that it is boring and hard to read. I started reading Lovecraft when I was in 7th grade...so...yeah
I've got to disagree. I liked the game fairly well, but the Mythos theme is THE reason I play Arkham Horror. The gameplay is pretty good, but it's the sense of impending doom and exploration that makes that game great. Elder sign was fun, but a bit dry.
Am I missing something? Everyone says this game is so easy but my gaming group (5 of us) constantly lose this game. We went an entire round of all of us losing our missions and expending our items doing so. After that it was all doom & gloom. We slowed down the clock, allowed a free reroll, and shared items and STILL lose this regularly. I am ready to toss it in the trash as an unwinnable game. Are we doing something wrong?
Hi! In this situation, try to use some really helpfuly investigators. (Mandy, Amanda, Jack, Jenny...). Chasing Elder Signs, or battle against the AO. I have won the base board game set about 2 out of 6 times... And, back then, I don't think I was completely following the rules (correctly). It can get dire, fast! lol.
@walt776 I'm a fan of lovecraft's mythos...Just not his writing. I as most fans of Lovecraft will agree that his work is really hard to read, because it's so incredibly boring. :P The mythos on the other hand is inspiring.

It's totally worth it. It's excellent as a solo or two-player game. The game gets easier to beat with more players, which is why Tom said it was too easy; he was playing with five and six players! At one or two players, this game is not easy to beat at all. This is my favorite solo game of all time.
I think he kept pulling Yig, which is the LEVEL 1 Ancient One. The other Ancients are a lot more difficult. I beat him (YIG) a couple of times. I also beat Cthullu, once!
What's the incentive to play it, though? If you like Arkham Horror, why would playing a shorter lighter Arkham Horror sound like a good idea, and if you don't, why would you want to play anything AH-related? Besides, from your description, it's a rather boring game of dice rolling and chit collecting until the endgame finally comes along. That's a good descriprtion of Arkham Horror in general, but with less theme and less connection to what the game is supposedly about.
It's not even close to Arkham seriously it's like a realy weak!! I like it like one time a yare!! Arkham I can play 2 times a week sometimes even two times a night!
It's amazing how far the dice tower has come along! Tom looks far less awkward these days. I am a little uneasy seeing Sam with hair too! Haha
I dunno if it's fair to call Lovecraft dry, I mean, most of his stories take place in or near bodies of water.
I personally think that AH is the ultimate theme i want to bring to the table but it is just never going to happen in my gamer group but I am glad Elder Sign came out, although I still wouldn't say the hype is as much compare to AH but the strategy is there and I want to point them out! 10 years later and I absolutely agree that this is a complete replacement for a Arkham Horror. That game tries to do a lot more than it needs to do.
Always will keep Arkham because of the overall depth of the game and Theme. Elder Sign is good, but used for shorter sessions.
i agree its a bit easy but i tried the version where you get one doom token every time when clock strikes midnight and its much more tense and complicated.

What game was Sam thinking about at 11:37 when talking about Twilight Imperium downsize? Maybe Eclipse?
Did you use the "no glasses" filter as camera lense? ;-)
Try moving the clock 4 hours instead of 3 every day.
Or do what I did: move the doom track all the times when the clock strikes midnight :D (misunderstanding :P)
Now review with Gates of Arkham (yes, I know Zee did it already).

Lovecraft, dry? You should read Ayn Rand, then come back and say that.
Nice review.

Well the quality of Star Wars novels depends entirely on the author.
This game has a lot of non-dice stuff to be called a "dice" game...
yes! finally :D
If they made a WW2 dice game, would they call it "Nazi Yahtzee"?
Ohhh.. those are fighting words: Lovecraft "drier than dirt." Given this is from the same man who has praised Star Wars novels in the past, I think I can deduce your literary tastes are not quite up to the same standard as your taste in board games. But you give good reviews, so I can forgive.
