4 Years later, and I FINALLY got a copy of this game! Easily my favorite variant of Pandemic, not just for the theme, but actually the lack of expansions as well. I tend to be very ocd about wanting my games to feel "complete", so I almost ritualistically will buy all expansions for games I own, which also makes me very hesitant to buy new games. This being self contained just makes it that much easier for me to grab and go, as well as... I have a lot of Cthulhu and horror liking people in my family since getting married, so the theme brings them in better too.
I played this at GenCon. Its a great new take on Pandemic and has enough differences to give a different feel for the game. Also, as a big selling point, you can play a game of this version of Pandemic in about half the time of an original Pandemic game. Everyone that played it with me at GenCon liked it and were saying they would buy it.
I don't care for the original Pandemic theme at all, but this looks more interesting-- I much prefer this theme, so it could make the difference for me. Artwork and minis look nice.
Played it yesterday. 100% deserves a place in my collection alongside the original Pandemic. Completely agree with Zee here. It's a streamlined version logistics wise with added atmosphere. All new things are truly brilliant and fitting. One needs both because you will play different versions with different people. I myself prefer this one actually overall. But if I am for a tougher more puzzly. less thematic challenge I will play the original with the expansions. In The Lab is our go-to one. Would like to get Iberia now. It seems like Z-Man is extremely serious about what they put out under the Pandemic name. They are not just printing cash, they truly put their souls into the versions.
Honestly I love this game and own it in addition to pandemic. It feels like a Call of Cthulhu or Arkham horror adventure, in a 30-45 minute time frame with a small box size and streamlined rules to boot.
I recently picked this game up at a charity shop , I have have pandemic , pandemic legacy and pandemic the cure . I have to say that all the games are different enough to include them all. If I want a quick pandemic game where I am going to get beaten quickly I will play this or the cure. I have to say that I love the artwork and minis in this version. It is a great reimagining of.a great game and the gameplay to me is definitely more than a simple re-skin
I always thought the mechanics for Cthulhu were intriguing but running around curing a disease never really clicked with me. I also always thought the whole Cthulhu myth is was intriguing, but never really saw an implementation of the theme that i thought worked for me. So with this game, i feel like I finally got the right fit for me on both fronts. Plus great miniatures I can paint and cool artwork. (I'm a component junkie, even a great game often loses me with little wooden cubes!) Thanks for the review. Helped me decide to buy this at GrandCon.
If Zee becomes a permanent part of "miami dice" then the "miami vice" joke no longer works. You cannot both be a Parody and break the basic elements which relate it to the original work.
In my opinion, it simplifies the movement system, research station, outbreak system of the original. Some changes are major, like the sanity die, shogas, old ones, limited spaces to move. Others are thematic reskins.
I agree with Zee. I think that there are enough changes to this to be its own game. I know that I would play this over regular Pandemic at times. There are a few different strategies to this one as well which makes it nice.
It differs a lot more from regular Pandemic than any Ticket to Ride edition differs from each other, so I don't see the problem with owning both. Although personally, I really don't need another Cthulhu game.
Great video, just a helpful fyi: you must be on the exact same space to share a clue or a relic, not the same town. The rule in the book is vague to this (it says you must share the same "location"), but the specific example given in the rulebook about sharing clues clarifies this.
I had issues with the Fantasy Flight Lovecraft games I've played. Arkham Horror was so detailed it was almost obsessive-compulsive, which made it too long to play. Elder Sign, on the other hand, was just a pure chance game, with no Lovecraft flavor. Reign of Cthulhu cures both those problems -- it has much more theme and flavor than Elder Sign, but isn't so intricate that it takes four hours to play like AH. Since I really like the Lovecraft theme, I'd play Reign of Cthulhu over classic Pandemic.
I thought they had done. Well Tom reviewed it I guess that's not the same. Now that I think about it I'd like to see if it's one of the rare longer games that Zee likes and I would be equally excited to hear Sam's take on the miniatures. Monsters indeed Cody! Monsters Indeed!
I totally agree with Zee. I understand Sam's perspective of how it feels like Pandemic, but I side with Zee in that it has mechanics that make it very different. So I guess I side with Tom. I'm in the middle.
I like Cthulhu themes and Pandemic, but originally was going to give this one a miss for now at least in favor of some other titles, but damnit now I want this game if only for those minis! What have you guys done to me?! I'm itching to paint them now! :O
Really? Those guys are *tiny*. If you're looking for some great C'thulu minis, check out Mansions of Madness. Since you're into painting the fact that you definitely have to put some work into their assembly won't bother you and they really are highly detailed. Lots of luck with the lollipop cult tho' I wish you the best yer' braver than I!
I never played Pandemic, so if I have to choose one, and since I like Lovecraft and don't care about, the standard disease theme. Should I get this one? Are the both games equal in terms of gameplay, rules and things like that?
Just picked this up at a thrift store. I dislike Cthulhu, but I hate the pandemic theme, so this is a big improvement for me. I don’t have a pandemic, so I will keep this one.
I think there is something to be said here: I like the channel in general even if my tastes do not meet with any of the regulars (i'm more of a Jason-like Eurocentric guy, even if i do play and enjoy SOME amerithrashy games) and I very much enjoy Zee when he slips jokes in Top 10s and whatnot; but, it does leave a bad taste in my mouth when he claims that this is enough of a variant from the base game to own both and then when he talks about Eurogames he's quick to say things like: "Good old Eurogame #742". I mean, i'm sure that there are nuances between this and Pandemic, and one guy that has played pandemic 500 times will catch them at a glance; but i can assure you that between one "cube pusher" and another there are a lot of nuances as well.
I assume you're talking about his Seafall review? Unfortunately, board gaming is in its Baroque period. Competency and the "musicality" (for lack of a better word) is so ubiquitous as to be banal and hard to overcome. Designers craft increasingly elaborate and stylized games to rise above the mob. Eurogames are to this Golden Age as dance music was to that era of music. It possesses incredible variation and flexibility, and it's pleasing to the ear, but too many hands have molded it. We'll hit our Golden Mean, our Bach, and then Eurogames will disappear for a while in favor of minimalist titles. In other words, we'll turn to the equivalent of rock and roll or Classical . . . even though Euros are technically more masterful, complex and complete in design. Zee's riding the zeitgeist right now.
Yeah i took the "(...) #742" sentence straight from the Seafall review, i didn't mention it because i'm not defending Seafall at all, haven't played it, can't comment. That sentence though, is pretty clear, even out of context. To say that there are 'n' number of eurogames that are "samey" and then say that Pandemic and Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu are different enough to grant them 2 spots on my shelf, means a lack of understanding towards Eurogames or too much despise towards them.
+akaSkyWolf That's fair, and I even agree. I just think that the general opinion of JASE (Just Another Soulless Euro) influences Zee here and indicates an overarching trend. An aside: Plaid Hat developed Seafall for a long time, and that might have hurt it. Long development cycles usually either indicate a flawed masterpiece (which is often more interesting) or a muddled, design-by-committee mess.
If I didn't play/own Pandemic in my life and I had a choice between this or Pandemic, I'd choose this. It's too late though for this game in my opinion. I really don't think I would get enough new out of it for it to be worth it.
Gamera 23 I have actually never played Pandemic (because inner hipster thinks it's too mainstream). My group plays Eldritch Horror regularly because we like the theme and the feeling of a GM-less RPG. Do you think Cthulhu Pandemic feels more boardgamey? So maybe about 45 minutes of playtime? I am trying to decide whether this is worth picking up, of if it will be a situation where anytime we might want to play this, we would end up just playing Eldritch Horror instead.
Yes 45 minutes. Maybe less. You can probably play 3 to 5 games of Reign of Cthulhu in the time it takes to play Eldritch Horror. And yes it does feel more boardgamey. I really like the game and feel it's worth picking up...just dont expect anything like Eldritch Horror.
Just an educated guess but this is clearly much shorter than Eldritch Horror, assuming it's the same length as normal Pandemic it's probably a 45 minute game versus Eldritch Horror which can be up to three and a half to four hours for a four player game. On the other hand Eldritch Horror has a lot more content and depth than Pandemic in general so it fills a very different gaming niche. You would play this when you have an hour to kill, you play Eldritch Horror when you want to get together for a multi-hour long more epic style game, so owning both doesn't seem like it would be a problem.
The theme looks very interesting, but the map looks way way too small compared to Eldritch Horror. While I like Pandemic, I think Eldritch Horror looks better.
I think it looks different enough than Pandemic to say it's more than just a retheme. However I don't think it will fit into my collection since I already have Pandemic. If I did ever pick this up I would probably get rid of the original.
Thanks guys another great review! It looks like now there are two choices for games that are great to play following an adventure with Eldritch Horror, Mansions of Madness and the like. This and Elder Sign. As for saturation, yeah I'd say with the release of certain Arkham style games it's apparent that were reaching a large level of saturation but I don't think it will go anywhere because 1. No one owns the license so *anyone* can make an Arkham style game. and 2. When done well the idea of ordinary people (Ninjas, SuperHeroes, Robots, and Gods need not apply.) triumphing over extraordinary odds is where the appeal really comes from. Operative words there being: "When done well." That's what I wanted to (and did) see in this review so I'll be picking this one up. Kinda' makes me glad I've waited so long to finally pick up Pandemic even though co-ops are my favorite genre'.
ehh Not sure on this one. I love the original Pandemic greatly, I've yet to play Legacy, but it's mainly cause I'm not keen on buying disposable games, no matter how good it is. Plus there are too many Pandemic-esque games coming out for my liking. With this and Iberia coming out this year, I'm thinking we can use a break from them, but this has me kind of interested...kind of.
Keep hearing this, and just want to say that its really not disposable. The story can be played once, but by once we are talking anywhere up to 48 solid hours of game play. Once you are done you have a playable game, with slightly different rules, that you can play as many times as you want. Its not like Time Stories where there is literally no replay value. You are left with a playable game that is still enjoyable.
I like both pandemic and Cthulhu, but I have other games in my arsenal that I'm happy with. after this review I don't feel like this brings anything new enough to the table to warrant.
I no longer play Pandemic because the theme is so dry and abstract - and the kids have no interest in curing diseases - which is why Defenders of the Realm has totally replaced it, but this looks like it might be a winner. We love Lovecraft in our house.
Honestly if you view this as just a Pandemic reskin, you can't be very familiar with Pandemic. The Old Ones, Shoggoths, and Insanity mechanics are entirely new; the cultists work entirely differently also.
Being a huge fan of Arkham Horror as well as Pandemic...this game comes across as a re-theme of the wonderful Pandemic...but without any interesting "thematic" elements. This is like Cthulhu Monopoly. What's the point?
I have absolutely no problem with "milking the franchise" - if it makes sense - such as the intriguing "Iberia"-themed Pandemic. But this one makes no sense at all, with the Pandemic branding. Imagine a non-sensical "Pandemic: Forbidden Island" branding.
@Greg Heilers funny you mentioned this a year ago, since I come from the future and Pandemic has released Pandemic: Rising Tide, which is actually "Pandemic: Forbidden Island" :)
Although I truly enjoy the original game, I think Zee is just too in love with Pandemic to see this game is practically a "re-skin" Tom and Sam's rating/thoughts are more believable, and I think Zee was too forgiving in the theme and lack of originality just cause it's Pandemic. Heck, in one top 10 he had 3 Pandemic games on it! We know it's your favorite game, but not every theme needs to encompass the same formula. I'm not a big fan of the over saturation of Cthulhu and, now it seems, Pandemic as well. I know they have another game coming out, Pandemic Iberia, so it's getting a bit ridiculous. I guess we'll see news on "Pandemic: Isis Crisis" at GenCON 2017

In a few years Zee's entire top 10 will be just Pandemic variants
To which he is likely to reply: "Aaaaaaaaaaaand?"
Sme problem here👌😅
I’m pretty sure this has played out and is confirmed 100% accurate 4 years later.
Played it yesterday. 100% deserves a place in my collection alongside the original Pandemic. Completely agree with Zee here. It's a streamlined version logistics wise with added atmosphere. i have to agree with Sam...i can't leave my house without walking past a dozen flocks of Dodos
I recently picked this game up at a charity shop , I have have pandemic , pandemic legacy and pandemic the cure . I have to say that all the games are different enough to include them all. Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu looks amazing!!! I need this game in my collection ASAP
Sam: "Cthulu is going the way of the dodo... it's everywhere." ...Um... :)
Good review guys, looks interesting.
Despite I already had Pandemic and I don't like the creepy artwork, I bought it and I'm glad about that.
Just a quibble, Cthulhu is not a 'license', the Cthulhu mythos is public domain, no license is necessary to use t.
"Going the way of the Dodo" and "becoming too common" and not exactly synonyms. ;)
This may finally be the one (and only) Cthulu game I purchase.
I always thought the mechanics for Cthulhu were intriguing but running around curing a disease never really clicked with me. I also always thought the whole Cthulhu myth is was intriguing, but never really saw an implementation of the theme that i thought worked for me. I tought Pandemic Legacy was a joke when I first heard about it :D
A Pandemic and Cthulu mix is exactly what was missing in boardgaming!! I cannot wait to burn it if I ever see a copy somewhere.
Is the Dice Tower ever going to include Zee in the intro of Miami Dice?
"The voice of the people" requires no titles or accolades. Well, other than "The voice of the people."
Did Miami Vice have three guys in it?
koalabrownie there are 3 people in this Miami Dice video. Sooo... what's your point?
If Zee becomes a permanent part of "miami dice" then the "miami vice" joke no longer works. You cannot both be a Parody and break the basic elements which relate it to the original work.
In my opinion, it simplifies the movement system, research station, outbreak system of the original. Some changes are major, like the sanity die, shogas, old ones, limited spaces to move. Others are thematic reskins.
This game isn't Pandemic: Cthulhu Edition.
It's a Cthulhu game that takes ideas from Pandemic.
It has enough differences to NOT call it a "re-skin".
nah im with sam with this one..take away the cthulhu theme and replace it with lets say star wars it will still hold. 're-skin'.
I was tempted to post a snarky comment about a fedora, but you know what, it's pretty well pulled off so well done sir.
I agree with Zee. I think that there are enough changes to this to be its own game. I know that I would play this over regular Pandemic at times. There are a few different strategies to this one as well which makes it nice.

Awesome overview. Want to get my hands on this game now.

Sam "going the way of the Dodo" literally means going extinct or disapearing what you meant to say was the Cthulhu is becoming...pandemic. ;)
Do you think you will do a mansions of madness 2nd edition Miami dice?
they should do, I'm just a dude in Spain and I've got it on my table !
I thought they had done. Well Tom reviewed it I guess that's not the same. Now that I think about it I'd like to see if it's one of the rare longer games that Zee likes and I would be equally excited to hear Sam's take on the miniatures. Monsters indeed Cody! Monsters Indeed!

I find that if you enjoy any base game then usually you will also find a reskin/change to be good
@9:12 All i needed thanks.!
I know Zee mentioned Pandemic Lite but for the new Pandemic player would this be easily to teach/learn than the original?
I like Cthulhu themes and Pandemic, but originally was going to give this one a miss for now at least in favor of some other titles, but damnit now I want this game if only for those minis! What have you guys done to me?! I'm itching to paint them now! :O

Anyone noticed the extra Space in this Box? Expansions?
I'm with Tom on this one. I might personally enjoy Cthulu more, but regular Pandemic would get played so much easier with my wife and gaming group.
Next stop: Pandemic LCG
Shark jump incoming!!
Is there a secondary (permanent) benefit to closing a gate, despite just tossing a few cultists?
Healing insanity.
You can regain your sanity.
warning the gates can be reopened...bwa hahaha
I never played Pandemic, so if I have to choose one, and since I like Lovecraft and don't care about, the standard disease theme. Should I get this one? Are the both games equal in terms of gameplay, rules and things like that?
I'm not sold on this. I love pandemic but I also like the saving the world theme more than Cthulhu. Far more looking forward to Iberia.
Just picked this up at a thrift store.
I dislike Cthulhu, but I hate the pandemic theme, so this is a big improvement for me. I don’t have a pandemic, so I will keep this one.
SO EXCITED. WANT IT NOW.
Difference between this and the original is much like the different Ticket To Ride games. Different map, new rules.
I think there is something to be said here:
I like the channel in general even if my tastes do not meet with any of the regulars (i'm more of a Jason-like Eurocentric guy, even if i do play and enjoy SOME amerithrashy games) and I very much enjoy Zee when he slips jokes in Top 10s and whatnot; but, it does leave a bad taste in my mouth when he claims that this is enough of a variant from the base game to own both and then when he talks about Eurogames he's quick to say things like: "Good old Eurogame #742".
+Sean Weeks *complex, and complete
Yeah i took the "(...) #742" sentence straight from the Seafall review,
i didn't mention it because i'm not defending Seafall at all, haven't played it, can't comment.
How do you think this game compares to Eldritch Horror?
Pandemic Reign of Cthulhu is super light compared to Eldritch Horror. Reign of Cthulhu is even lighter than Original Pandemic.

I hate Pandemic but I love this, just for the easier trading. I can't fathom how people beat the original.
Willng to try.
I like Pandemic just fine, but this variant appeals to me far more than the original.
ehh Not sure on this one. I love the original Pandemic greatly, I've yet to play Legacy, but it's mainly cause I'm not keen on buying disposable games, no matter how good it is. Keen to check this one out, I like that they've tried something a bit different with the theme (for pandemic haha).
Zombies are way more prevalent than Lovecraftian Horror
Being a huge fan of Arkham Horror as well as Pandemic...this game comes across as a re-theme of the wonderful Pandemic...but without any interesting "thematic" elements. This is like Cthulhu Monopoly. What's the point?
It's called milking the franchise, much like catan, ticket to ride.
Unicorn poop for sanity tokens!
This is a pretty good game, just played 5 matches on the easy difficulty with good friends, we got 1 victory. 4 hour's plus fun
wtf with the rating system xD
I dont own Pandemic, so it a no brainer to me
this game might be quite fitting for me and my friend
but the game (or the whole Pandemic series) is just too expensive for me so nah
an interesting reuse of pandemic mechanics.
Not feeling it for the new Pandemic spin off😉😃
No dispatcher, 0/10
didnt even have to watch the entire thing to know they'd all love it. bye.
Although I truly enjoy the original game, I think Zee is just too in love with Pandemic to see this game is practically a "re-skin" Tom and Sam's rating/thoughts are more believable, and I think Zee was too forgiving in the theme and lack of originality just cause it's Pandemic.
Over saturated theme added to the quickly becoming over saturation of pandemic titles. No thanks.
You lost me at placing cultists everywhere. Pass.
