I think you already said it best. When we are watching the comedian make your cam small and then when you jump in to make a comment or react to something blow your cam up to the main spot. Best of both worlds
It's better having the video be the small box overlapping the large camera screen. That way, nothing is obscured by your camera, and you're only sitting on half the camera screen anyway so it works. Having your camera be on top of the reacted to video would be a problem if that video had subtitles as well, because you'd be cutting off the last bit with the camera being in the way.
