Actually, Thriller was recorded with a Shure SM7, including Price's voiceovers. It's a pretty great mic. James Hetfield is also known for his love for the SM7 (The Black Album was recorded with it, and he is still seen using it live). Granted, the SM7 is an SM57 "on steroids" (pumped up cartridge element).
    Great stuff, Glenn.

The most important thing in being a session player is the ability to READ. Most times, you'll walk in, the producer will toss a chart to you, give you 5 minutes to suss out the parts, and then it's "Go" time. If you can't read charts, tab, or music, he'll know instantly and call for the next player and you're out the door. In the world of sessions, time = $$$. LEARN TO READ.

I just let a SIX MINUTE AD run for you Glenn. You're one of a handful a people I could stand to do that for. Anyway, for the guy wanting a cheap mic that you suggested the SM57 to, I'll add that down the road he can add a Cloudlifter (or the like) to expand the usefulness of the SM57. Lastly: Hair Is Lif!

I believe the Netflix documentary you're referring to is called "Hired Guns". Watched it over the new year; pretty interesting stuff. As for the singer question, you can still do what Adam Neely recommended a few weeks back about autotuning the performance, have him memorize what it sounds like with perfect pitch, and the re-record without the autotune.

To the "Session Musician" guy. Speaking from real experience, I'm currently an Ad Agency commercial producer, and I used to work in a original music "jingle house" studio for advertising jingles and various other musical productions. One of the best ways to get on the roster for session work is kind of "old School". Look up all the studios in your area, send a demo or a link to your artist page etc, along with your resume, if you have experience in any notable acts, symphonies, high school or college marching bands, etc. Big bonus if you are able to actually read music, sight read, and make your own charts. Be versatile, and have versatile gear, if you are just a metal player, that's okay, you might get the call for that one time they need a "Metal guy" but you better be phenomenal at metal. But the more versatile, and the more versatile your gear, the more calls you will get. We used to call one specific guitarist all the time just because he had an arsenal of vintage gear, and if we were looking for a specific "sound", this guy had it. His playing was good and certainly capable, but not mind blowing, it was the gear and sound we wanted. And as Glenn said, you have to be easy to work with. Do what is asked of you, play how they want it, get your check, say thank you, and leave. This is not "Your" music. It's some one else's. Also, don't quit your real gig, being in a band, doing your thing. We regularly hired guys from local acts because they had something "unique" to offer. We had a Rock-a-Billy bassist and singer do several jobs for us, and he was really raw and unpolished, couldn't read music, but was amazing at what he did and nailed it every time. And don't just send the demo and resume....follow up...introduce yourself...and offer to audition live for free. There is no such thing as too much talent on a session musician roster. They are always looking. And if you do get regular work from a studio, be sure to Thank them! You'd be surprised how many return calls just being cool, easy to work with and grateful will get you. Check your ego at the door in any session. And Good Luck!

You hit the nail on the head with the tuning issues singer. I’m currently producing my group’s first EP and the singer (who is truly talented and seldom misses a note) CONSTANTLY complains that he was slightly off here and there, when in reality he wasn’t even a 1/16 step off. To which I tell him time and time again, “a little character in the vocal performance doesn’t hurt.” I’d rather you be the slightest bit off than sound like a soulless puppet with no emotion
It just goes to show how much the music industry has pushed this soulless pitch perfect performance with auto tune as, not even a crutch, but the whole wheelchair. [Shirt Idea: Autotune: Not a crutch, but the whole damn wheelchair]

Program the vocal melody with a keyboard and let the singer sing along to that. It is really easy to do and a piano sample library/ synthesizer is going to be tuned correctly.(acoustic guitar might work as well, be careful how it's tuned) This is really helpful if the singer wants to do harmonies in the studio, but hasn't written/learned them beforehand.

Hey Glen... As a luthier trying to relate to a sound engineer, think of an active guitar pickup as a DI box of sorts in relation to boosting a weak signal... Magnets in a pickup do not effect sustain or any such nonsense, they are far far far too weak...
Your videos are excellent, keep up the great work!..

About the good samples vs bad real drums, here's some insight: I'm in a punk metal band, and we tried to record some songs, first just for demo to be sent to the gigs, bars etc... to be able to play concerts, but seeing as I had to leave the band (I left the town) we decided to record a whole album. We already had two tracks recorded. We used cubase and recorded all instruments one by one, but seeing as I only had a 1 input interface, we had to record the drums with a single mic, placed kind of in the middle of the drum kit, aimed down. I managed to get a somewhat passable tone out of it by using a crapload of compression and eq, but then I wanted to check out what samples would sound like, and I don't know if it's the program I used, the fact I suck at mixing or just the fact we used samples, but it sounded really bad and fake.
We went for the real drums, and for the rest of the demo, we just used a tascam recorder put in the rehearsal space with us playing in front of it at matched levels, then recorded vocals aside from that to have a clear track, and honestly, for what we're doing, it's more than enough. What we did before sounded great, yeah, but it was just complete overkill.

Active PUs: Stronger magnets on Humbuckers have diminishing returns, since the magnetic field from one set with one polarity will also affect the other coil, which of couse has a magnet with reverse polarity. The other option to get more output is to add turns to the coils, but those are LR circuits, which act as low pass filters and since the inductance of a coil increases as the number of turns squared, while the resistance from the wire just increases as the number of turns the cutoff frequency gets lower as you add turns (hence your classic HB guitars having less top end, since they generally add turns compared to single coils - a PAF PU has 10,000 turns in total, while a strat PU has 8,000). Using an OP-amp circuit you can boost the signal without having to add turns and thus get hotter output without losing high frequency content.

on the tuning trouble thing for the vocalist, i've found making a simple midi piano or synth (anything that helps portrays notes in a clear way) to build a melody with the key im going for, then lowering its volume and use it as a guide is really helpful. because i keep it at a lower volume i'm getting better, even if only a little, at staying in key

Also, in South Africa we’ve had issues with a chain store having bombs left behind overnight and now I get “TSA’ed” on the way in every time I go in

Drum dial is Great but I highly recommend getting the tune bot, you can pinpoint frequencies and save them into a slot and have different settings for any situation.

AH Man!!!! You mentioned Phil X....... I was lucky to jam with him at his jam in Toronto, I forget what bar, he played bass for me , there was a sax player that I threw all the solos to...... then at the end of the song, Phil X said, You didn't play a solo,.....and started the song again....... I was like.....no thank you, I was green and just glad to make it through the song. The song was Before you accuse me-Clapton.

Sm57 - devin townsend was known to use them for live vocals back in the SYL days. I was at a rehearsal for them in London uk many years ago (and met meshuggah in the crowd!) and he was asking for a '57 for vocals because it has a plastic shield. The '58 he had onstage had a metal shield and was giving him shocks because of the difference in earth wiring with his rig from the US. He said "it's practically the same mic" except for some 10k frequencies ( if I recall correctly - it could have been 1k)

Flacid House yup, freely expressed to people to shut up among many other things. And most musicians of some notoriety are usually “crack heads”. Who really gives a fuck?, he was awesome and he was up front and in your face about everything he did and stood for.

H Bomb Most musicians don't habitually smoke crack. That isn't a metaphor for general drug use. The man smoked crack, a lot.
He stood for crack and treating his employees poorly. Notice that people quit Gwar like mad when he was alive and now that he's dead people are coming back.
Telling other people to shut up doesn't make you a free expressionist. Everyone thinks they themselves shouldn't be censored.

I've always found that the compressed tone of active pickups sounds really good for clean Jazz and Ambient.

  • @NeZversSounds
    @NeZversSounds 6 лет назад

Active pickups have EXACTLY the same magnets as passive. Active has fewer wire wounds and that's to get a higher frequency response (what comes with price = low output) so need to incorporate active circuit comes with an opportunity to make differential amplifier (coil signals are out of phase = noise cancelling) + tone shaping with filters.
If someone brings up a bullshit that active pickups have less dynamic range go check Lasse Lammert - EMG pickups have no Dynamics.

Hey Glen. You should try an EMG 85 in the bridge if you haven't already. It's so warm and chunky sounding. Especially on 7 string guitars. I play Dean RC7's and I have an 85-7 in the bridge and a 707 in the neck. Killer combo! Anyways, cheers from New Jersey!

I play Progressive metal and I find that active pickups really bring out the individual note and they "chug" better because it makes your tone a little bit more static and acts as a compressor, passove pickups I've noticed have a little bit more life in them especially when they are good ones and allow you to work with the guitar instead of the active pickups which work for you, I prefer passive when playing but recording I use both

The trick with the 57 is not to get in too close and literally blow the diaphragm away. the 58 has shielding for vocals which keeps you off the diaphragm

J Mascis usually uses an SM57 for his vocals in a live setting... Although it is said he does that because, since he uses so many vintage guitar pedals, other mics send electrical shocks to his face. But it seems to work just fine during their shows. Even through that wall of noise Dinosaur Jr creates, you can still hear the vocals.

£50= $85CAD, but also the UK gets stiffed on pricing. Something that costs $100 is usually priced at £100, rather than the £60 the exchange rate suggests. An SM57 or 58 is around £110 new.
