  • How exactly do we map the seafloor? Onboard E/V Nautilus, our Corps of Exploration uses the Kongsberg EM302 multibeam echosounder to create detailed seafloor maps. By generating sound beams and collecting returning data, this technology allows us to piece together the topography of the deep sea. Seafloor mapping began over a century ago, yet less than 25 percent of the world’s ocean has been charted at high resolutions. Our seafloor maps contribute to the Seabed 2030 initiative, an international collaborative project to combine all bathymetric data to create a comprehensive map of the ocean floor.
Having 3D maps of the seafloor also leads our ocean exploration goals. When exploring little-known ocean regions, we often need to create our own maps to plan efficient and safe operations. Whether focused on a canyon, seamount, or shipwreck, creating a map allows us to identify potential targets, cutting down exploration time and boosting our mission efficiency. Before ROVs are deployed, our team must first map the area to understand the region's characteristics and identify potential benthic habitats, seeps, and other environments and resources worthy of exploration.
E/V Nautilus is exploring unknown regions of the ocean seeking out new discoveries in biology, geology, and archaeology. Join us 24/7 for live video from the seafloor and to ask questions of our explorers currently aboard Nautilus: www.nautiluslive.org.

Does the echo location disturb the animals in the sea?

Sonar is known to hurt marine life, and even people who get in the way. There are practices to avoid those cases (watching for life, low power settings, etc.)

the echosounder used in this video is rated for 214 dB , can be lowered to about 180 dB in something the manual calls "Functionality to limit Mammal Harassment". 140 dB is a jet fighter taking off 50m away. so yeah it disturbs and can hurt marine life.

It's only scanning the entire ocean once it'll be OK 👍 👌

The sonar installed on the hull of Nautilus has a very short, directional acoustic pulse and the research studies have determined its impact on marine mammals to be de minimis, and not expected to have any effect on marine mammals. This is the same sonar used on a handful of other scientific mapping vessels of similar size and operated by federal agencies, universities, and non-profit organizations which are different from high-energy sonars frequently seen in the news. We partner with NOAA for the Environmental Assessment of the impact of all sonars on marine mammals. Learn more here: oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/explorations/sound01/background/acoustics/acoustics.html

Awesome video! Makes me wonder if you could use a pair of underwater drones like the Chasing M2 Pro to get a even more detailed three dimensional representation?

Even flies and rats and bugs are eliminated for eating things that belong to the crew. 🙄
