    ...With the exception of the more modern locomotives, it looks just like an old UP passenger liner from the Pre-Amtrak "Golden Age" of train travel... This was how the "Jet Set" moved across America - BEFORE the advent of jet aircraft!

    I used to ride the UPRR City of Portland when I was a boy. We would travel from Pocatello (a big UPRR rail yard in the day) to Nampa and back a few times a year. I really loved it. This was the late 60s to early 70s when the passenger service was shut down.

    I just saw this vintage UP train or a close variation tonight in Saint Paul, Minnesota parked along the Mississippi River. Can't find any public news about it's route or why it stopped here. Very unusual and exciting to see Union Pacific cars this far north, let alone seeing this many vintage passenger cars!

    I respect Amtrak and Metrolink, but they need to bring passenger service back; it would sell like crazy.
    UP would make a killing and what is the harm in making more cash via rail travel?

      Because long distance was never profitable, plus the class ones tried it in the 50s and 60s. It was proven time on and time off it doesn't work.

    Beautiful job! OMG the flood of memories return, riding the City of Los Angeles in 1959-60 to Omaha to visit family in Iowa. Even then, UP stopped servicing most of Iowa. We disembarked in Omaha drove over the border to Carrol IA. The 4 of us in a family bedroom was so cool, not to mention the Astra Dome dining car. One morning, we were stopped at a RR crossing right at the crossing gate. With vehicles waiting to cross, I pulled the shade up when my mom was changing her clothes. I was only 5 yrs old. I can still hear her shrieking. I also took the Challenger in '66. A rail fan to this day. I think It's time for another 1st class train trip. I'm fortunate as my better half loves the train, as well. Thank You for posting this, Mitcho. Dan - Los Angeles

      @laylay-ek7ux 8 лет назад +3

      cuz there so long it's so heavy and also there's some level crossing so if it crashes at high speed the people in the vehicle hit by the train will die while low speed they could die bit they might live

    The federal government is bleeding tax dollars operating Amtrak. I’m certain Union Pacific can handle the passenger rail service for a lot cheaper. The same goes for the USPS. Couriers such as FedEx/UPS can operate a lot more efficiently.

    • @Scotford_Maconochie
      @Scotford_Maconochie 5 лет назад

      Freight is more profitable than passenger for UP, BNSF and the lot. With shareholder pressure and constant layoffs UP would cut passenger trains in a heartbeat.
