this series has taught me so much about reefing. It has made me jealous of all the amazing equipment you can add onto your tank. I has a small 55 gallon tank right now and when I can I going to go with a 120 with sump and rematch this series to put in the equipment I feel is the best for me.
My favorite part is the cabinet and hood. Being a woodworker I would like to build something similar for my next tank. Also, I love the organization and neatness of all the elements. I really look forward to each video and I've learned so much, since I've only had a Reef Tank for a year. Thank you!
The Seneye monitor for those of us who have LEDs was definitely the best part of this series so far, knowing that this affordable piece of equipment can give me a better idea on how much lightning is needed on my tank has stopped me from wondering countless and countless hours thinking what could be wrong with my tank, but the plumbing work you guys did, the ghost overflow and sump in general are inspirational for my future tank build!
+BulkReefSupplyCom I'm going to add a few T5 retrofits that I got from you guys too (I'm wondering if I should keep watching your videos, they make me spend more money :P). My plan is to try to spread the light as much as I can since the LEDs seem to be very spotty and are not giving a more even PAR to my corals.
Great video. Using the zeovit method and ammonia removal is great and its good that their is a ammonia monitor sensitive enough to see if the media is exhausted or releasing. Seneye looks great to do this.
I hear the 'better quarantine". I just got myself a case of ich followed by a case of velvet. Thankfully, the survivors seem to be doing fine and I can hardly wait to finish their treatment so I can (FINALLY) put them in the display.
@@chriscoakley9738 Not sure what you're saying, but this was y first attempt six years ago - I've since taken a break, learned a ton, and am coming back to try again. Those fish never came out of quarantine before their illnesses, thankfully, but I had a lot of other problems because I didn't know what I didn't know.
Excellent series, Ryan! Part of my routine every Friday! I just wish I had my aquarium against the wall of a room where I could put all the equipment, rather than in the tiny sump space below. It seriously constrains what I can do. But MAN have I learned a ton! Thanks a lot!
Whatever you all do ... Please keep updating this tank frequently after week 52. Don't let this disappear like the clown harem tank... We all want to continue seeing progress, problems and the success of this tank going forward... I'm curious why u all went zeobit when marine pure would have given u all the biological filtration you could have ever wanted?
It's nice to know all the technology you've added is not really necessary to have a successful tank. Having said that I think it's a toss up between the Kessil AP700 and the Seneye. The Kessil shows how successfully hybrid lighting can adequately grow even light hogs like SPS and the Seneye is a nice surprise, I rather thought that it wasn't really that necessary but you've shown how effective it can be at monitoring some very basic parameters. Thanks for sharing all the ups and downs.
What a great video that makes all the previous so much more useful! Now I want to research running zeobit on my tank. Wish you guys would do a disease video and talk about quarantine tanks, common medications and could even expand the video or do a second about coral pests like apitasha!
Thanks for these amazing series! I plan to start my first reef tank in the near future and this serie is great for the preperation. Are you also going to explain how to trim corals? I find it quite unnaturally to take the sciccor and cut into the corals. Best regards from a fan in the Netherlands!
I've been following the setup of the BRS 160 as a guide for my soon-to-be-completed 93 Gallon Cube NPS tank and as such it's extremely difficult for me to narrow down one piece of equipment as my favorite, so I'll just the ones that I learned the most from and a bit of what they mean to me: 1. Theiling Roller Mat - What can I say, it's just awesome. (Sadly my tank's stand is too small for one. :( ) 2. ZeoVit Reactor/System - This showed me another great alternative method to nutrient reduction. 3. UV Sterilizer - This taught me the importance of one in a tank like mine for algae control and parasite reduction since the fish I want to keep don't do so well in a normal quarantine setup. 4. Seneye Monitor - It monitors Ammonia. 'Nuf said. Leave it to me to turn a simple answer into a long, drawn-out explanation beyond the scope of the question. :p
A final breakdown of the cost of all items used in this build would be nice: tank, sump, piping, instrumentation, dosers, reactors, coral frags, supplements, (except labor), etc., etc. New reefers would appreciate a realistic expectation of how much it costs to have a set up like this. Also, it would be nice to mention the time your team spends daily working on this tank and fine-tuning it's peripherals.
I've watched them all and am in the process of getting a new system going. Ideally, I go over a huge number of iterations in my head and on paper on a system level -- how will everything work together? I would have liked to have seen a system design approach , but understand the nature of this week-by-week series. I've learned a lot.
Question and a comment. The question is regarding the Seneye monitor. I have the Reef monitor and can use it for light readings, but it seems a bit limited. I have heard that in order to unlock all the features of the SEneye (when used as a Par meter) the Seneye Web Server unit is also required. I can get tihngs like Lux and the par graph but no PUR readings or anything else ( as it pertains to the Par meter). Is the Web server required to unlock more features. My comment is regarding the use of heaters with the Neptune Apex. I also use this exact setup, but one thing to keep in mind is that if the Temp probe is ever unplugged ( from the base unit) you won't get an error message like (Probe not detected), Instead the Temp reading on the diplay will drop to 70*F and it won't change. So for safety purposes an extra line should be added at the end. Something like....."If Temp
my question is about the roller mat. I had to ditch filter sock bc I found a lot of my Mico fauna in them. (pods and the like) what are your thoughts on this. I like to keep the "bug" population in my tank up for my mandarins as well as free food for the other fish. how do you think this will affect that
You mentioned you are considering out the Tunze pump but never really said what you are unhappy with. I am considering four of them for my upgrade in a few months, and am curious about you opinion. the series continues to be great guys!
What illness did you guys face early on? I tried the no QT method when I added my very first fish and lost that round of russian roulette immediately. The Firefish was covered in monogenian flukes and died 24 hours after acclimation. I QT all new fish now.
hey guys I have a question for yous. ive had a 20gal nano tank now for about 4/5 months and in the last month ive started adding a few sps frags. I'm dosing 2 part and levels are stable at Ca:450 alk:8.3. this works well with me coz the salt I'm using has these same levels so no fluctuation when doing water changes. I also dose nopox and this stuff works wonders. some of the corals are starting to encrust some not. also when I first got these frags nitrates and phosphates were pretty high and they browned out but colours starting to come back. anyway I read in some places that keeping alk at 12.6 accelerates growth but this sounds extremely high. what levels do yous keep the 160 at? also love your videos yous have helped me alot through this hobby. And an update on the 160?
Thanks for such awesome videos! I would love it if you could make a more detailed how-to for quarantining new fish, and if hyposalinity or medicated qt is better...

Just saw sumtin in the comments, your dumping the roller mat for the ULM??? Is this true and if so how come? I would think the mat would be less maintenance than socks
You’ve mentioned the man-made rock a lot but never what actually gives it its “fake” coralline color, guessing it is indeed reef safe but I’m curious what it is, paint?
I do hope you'll go over the Reef Angel when you do tank controllers, it's an open source one instead of the closed systems of the Apex and ReefKeeper.
By far im most impressed with the thieling roller mat. Unfoetunatley for me.i will.probably end up running two for.my system, which means designing a dump around that fact
If you have a reef controller controlling the heaters, just set the heaters own temp controller to a ceiling so if the controller locks on they will over ride in an emergency. Could never get the titanium to last anywhere near the glass units for longevity.
U guys were pushing those finnex heaters, when the cobalt heaters were the most consistent, now u want to change the finnexes, should have listened to me months ago!! Lol
+BulkReefSupplyCom Ryan good sir, If you don't mind me asking, what does a tank like that cost? I'd love to have a tank like that!! Love the videos, and I can't wait for more! 😁
Marine pure keep one in there forever so we don't think you took it out cause it leaches out bad stuff that people talk about I was thinking to put it in my tank but no more until I see it in this tank
I get that you gotta sell product, I just can't get over those cords in the tank. No way you'd use those powerheads if you were making a tank at your house.
Roller mat looks intriguing but at $400 just for the equipment plus $30 every time you need to replace the material, that just makes it way too expensive to justify the convenience of "not having to worry about filter socks" ... if you're testing alkalinity every day then your little calendar should have "change out filter socks" bi-weekly. The SenEye looks promising too, but $200? Yet you show yourself using a smart phone with it, doesn't that require the additional server module to do it? (assuming you don't have a PC right next to a humid environment of the tank). I can't wait until you do the controller episodes, so many different modules that the Apex sells it makes your head spin as to how much it will ACTUALLY cost to do all the stuff they advertise.
***** Well I guess you just do a little more than I do with filter socks, granted I use the smaller mesh ones so they don't capture quite as much, but a quick rinse, squeeze them dry and they're back in in no time. When I did use the heavier "felt" filter socks I just tried to get them as white as possible with multiple rinsings and then let drip dry. Don't get me wrong, I would love that machine, but $400 just seem a little too much considering what it does.
Thanks. However, I don't understand why you guys removed the marine cubes. I have done many research and I couldn't find any conflict. Basically, more surface that you have more home for beneficial bacteria. please let me know if you have any specific reason and thank you :) btw below you can check the same topic in zeovit forum www.zeovit.com/forums/showthread.php?p=320791 zeovit.com/forums/showthread.php?p=297149
