I work for a Scanning studio and it's fun to know that some of my colleagues have 3d printed their own heads to attach to chaos lord models, also to counter things like holes appearing in meshes, shine and specular light is your worst enemy, you can use things like baby powder to Matte the surface, this can be through either straight out the bottle or sprayed with a mixture of powder and water, just make sure to not add too much or you can create new data on the mesh which can create a bumpy texture if the powder gets captured. in your case maybe you can just spray it a nice matte grey and then maybe a nice light dusting of white paint that is spotty if that makes sense.

It would be interesting to see how the process would be affected by a quick light zenithal highlight.
Or a Matt varnish. I think the shiny resin won't be helping the process
This uses photogrammetry. It has to identify the same point from multiple photos in different angles to build a mesh. So the flat looking, smooth shiny resin will really disrupt it's ability to do that.

pop one scanner should be for scanning people etc. it was never for scanning miniatures. but pop mini has had a lot of updates since they sent it to you. and please don't tell me you threw it out into the trash when you could have donated it to a school or something. i have used a lot of scanners over the years. and photogrammetry is one my favorite ways to scan. and i will be getting one of these. i have seen this scanner on some videos and will be getting one. but most times for miniatures you would need a jewelry scanner to capture details. the open scan comes very close. thanks for the videos. but again the pop range are good if your using it for what they are intended for. scanning larger objects and people. and faces. etc i use them to scan and make custom models for players :) using there own heads.

@@SquidmarMiniatures i find the best way to scan with the mini for models. again depending on the size of the mode. is to drape a black bag over the side of the table and wear black nytril gloves as the scanner cant see them. then have the scanner sitting on your lap and rotate the part about in front of the scanner. i would also suggest downloading the latest software for it of there forums. and download the latest calibration software and calibrate the scanner if you want. but the main handy thing about the mini and pop range is they are portable and with a good phone it can do good scans. but mostly the revopoint scanners is a good all rounder :)

Now where we will be in a couple of years with better hardware and software, now that will be fun to see.

I am very new to this hobby. If I had a 3D scanner, I would use it quite differently: I would take the 3D digitized model into a program like Blender or Daz3D Studio, and use the program to visualize different colors in different simulated lighting conditions. This would not only allow experimentation with the color palette, but would give an idea of what realistic highlighting and shading would be for the model.
Of course, adding scenery and other 3D figures would allow the model to be used in a hopefully artistic render as well. In any case, this video was a useful peek at the current state of the art for the scanning.

I would rather watch making 100 different bases or painting 100 zombies using some different techniques. Point is this seems to be pretty much useless for an average viewer. My guess on growing prints is that the scanner picks up the surface at the outer pane and the printer adds percent of the nozzle width to the surface with each scan. The scanner picks up only differences in light and shadow and with growing numbers of thickness added these light informations reduce more and more. Has the first print the exact dimensions of the original? Are they getting taller with each print?

You pushed them past their limits and, without surprise, their performance didn't meet your expectations.

the hole in the head probably appeared because of a specular highlight at this spot. 3d scanning is really sensitive to specular highlights in general. Did you varnish the minis with some ultra matte paint before scanning? I'm sure it would help a lot, especially if its some dark paint. Bright and specular materials are most dificult to scan. The original seems to have been quite glossy and bright, you lost a lot at that first step right there i'd guess

The original was primed matte black after we filmed the original view of it and we're using a white speckle paint on top as recommended by the creator of the scanner :)

And the scanner has some built-in filters, which filter the specular highlights through cross polarization

I work for a scanning company and we sigh in unison when we see shiny or even worse transparent objects come for scanning. Lots of baby powder is required to deal with that monster.

@@cosmorunner23 i agree that this true for all other scanning methods, but photogrammetry can easily overcome the issue of specular highlights using aforementioned cross polarization. I wonder whether this might work with structured light too?!

@@openscan_eu Very good point, we do still struggle with certain objects especially when they are purely chrome or a translucent glass for example as to use the software the system needs to have tie in points it can recognise throughout multiple shots to stitch the images together as repeating texture or no texture won't build well, so introducing dust or markers that can be identified or manually used for aligning on certain software is the usual strategy. I do use a faro arm regularly and again a very fine level of dust and markers are usually applied in areas lacking detail to help it build but of course that's using software to manually help it allign.

I demand to see the 100th scan! Maybe it will show some ancient demons face if you scan it enough times. Like peeling of the layers of lies with each scan
