I’ve had this set for two years and it’s still moist like the day I got it. One time I didn’t use it for months and some paints dried up so much (black and Indian red and others) so I poured water in them to fill up the cubes and closed it for four days. Then I opened it and mixed them each and they were full again and brand new. I’m guessing the water evaporated over time but nothing else did
I know I've said this before but I'm gonna say it again anyway. The way you block out colors and then slowly blend them into a soft but richly layered piece is just so wonderful to watch.
This one took me four whole days to finish so it's late 😭but I have a poll about what you guys want me to do for my next video if you guys wanna check it out ❤️❤️
Yo you need to stop being so hard on yourself. This was a great painting and you have an awesome sense of color and contrast. Trust in yourself and the process!
Thank you for sharing your insights. I have just started using gouache. I used to use acrylics so I’ve come from the opposite end of the spectrum from you, give you’ve moved from watercolours. I would say gouache is MUCH harder to use than acrylics. Particularly struggling like you were with the paint lifting problems. When I used acrylic I used to just have the luxury of going over and over a painting and all my mistakes until I was happy. With gouache this is not really so easy to take this approach. Having said that, I think changing mediums pushes you outside your comfort zone which is a great way to explore new techniques and really stimulates creativity when all is said and done. Look forward to seeing more of your tutorials. This is a beautiful portrait you have completed!
So many RUclips artists are so hard on themselves. This painting is lovely! I remember the first time I used gouache and thought I would cry myself to sleep. (jk!) So different than watercolor. Thank you for sharing.
When I use gouache I start with a layer of watercolor underneath to block out the shapes. I think it gives a nice blended look and it’s easier to apply over watercolor than using just the gouache! I hope this helps! Your art is amazing!✨💖
I know this is a year late but if youre here i just wanna ask , do you apply the guache when the watercolor is still wet or just when it dries? Thanks!
@@ayo6739 hey! Yeah I wait for it to fully dry, and use a kind of layered technique starting with darks and then lights and then mid tones. Then at the end you add the highlights.
Ik this is a rlly old comment but your advice is really good and is actually a technique that a lot of classical painters used when they made gouache studies!
Hello! Loved the painting, I have the same gouache palette. I found that once they have dried, you can spray the paints with water and let them soak for a day or 2. After some time, the paints get soft and you can mix them with a palette knife. It reconstitutes the paint and brings it back to that creamy texture it originally came in :-)
Someone told me to let the layers dry completely before adding another. We are usually more critical of our art than others. I think you did a great job on it and appreciate that you shared it with us.
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO... struggles for the same reason... The getting-the-flat-wash part always caught me off-guard, and was the source of so much frustration... Part of what I like about watercolors was also layering very light washes to build up colors. (narrator voice) It did not go well in gouache. Using your fingertips to blend made me chuckle-- mostly because that is a mood. In the end, trying to tackle it like I'm doing digital painting worked better for me. At the very least, I'm a lot less frustrated! Your art is gorgeous and I've loved everything you've drawn so far, but in this one I'm just in love with the sketch and can't stop staring at her eyes at the end-- so wonderfully expressive. The finished piece looks gorgeous, I'm fascinated by how you painted the area that's uh, connecting the bridge of the nose and the cheek, it's really beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing this video with us! Especially given the frustration you've had during parts of the painting process.
Wait are you me?! Lmfaooooo at the light layering with gouache and also the part where you mentioned THE ONE PART of t her face where i spent the most time is either reassuring or embarrassing because it means my struggles on that part we’re way too apparent
@@hambot You spent much time on it for good reason and great results!! With this portrait at this angle it just has so much to say...? Like both in terms of form of the face and and the shape and the atmosphere. It's extremely lovely and I think the extra care and time you put into it really comes through. THANKS SO MUCH AGAIN FOR THIS VIDEO... it gives me strength
Agree 100% with your opinions 😭 watercolor is my basic, when i use gouache and I uh its kinda hard. I learn that jelly gouache underneath (or all kind of gouache) will melt when we apply new layer. So 2-3 layers is maximum.. this is why in my opinion gouache is more hard to learn than watercolor cs i really used to layering my paint a lot 😂
Fantastic artwork! Very beautiful. I thought you were wonderful. Stay connected and stay safe!! I respect you I have learned a lot from your work. My friend. 👍👍👍👍
Yeah, I find that gouache works best opaque. Yes you can water it down and paint many layers but for that purpose I would use watercolour as it spreads well. Gouache could always be added on por a final opaque layer on top of watercolour.
I didn't know before but i think so! I saw the photo on pinterest but i haven't had the time to watch breaking bad yet so i don't know if that's where this exact scene is from
I saw that using synthetic brushes helps a lot with gouache. Not sure if your brushes are synthetic or not, but yeah! Wow, it came out beautifully and now I’m really inspired to make a gouache piece. 😊
So gorgeously done and ever so inspiring! I'd love to try your style sometime in the future especially since I have little to no experience with gouache.
I will always support your artworks. Your art style is mesmerizing and inspiring. It also gives me frustrations because I cannot produce the same hehe but I do hope that you will be having a video of your digital paintings since my medium is digital. You're one of the best.

i also put a layer of cling wrap over the top of the paints, then add the cover. helps keep it airtight.
Jessica Jones? Very nice work. Thanks for the video
The final outcome is lovely - very painterly. I like what you did with the hair (a kind-of comic-book style), and the background is interesting, too.
Thank you so much!

As a fellow watercolorist using gouache more often lately, I wholeheartedly agree about your comments and suggestions. This was a great video. ☺️

ty for showing the sketching process too. ppl just skip it and show the painting process only which makes it harder for beginners like meh.
I love your paintings! Thank you for inspiring me everytime i watch your videos.

So many people have said this exact same thing, especially watercolor artists. Disturbing the layers underneath is so frustrating.
Love the final piece and the overall pacing of the video
that expression is really well done! so emotive i could literally animate it my head haha
Your drawing is so beautiful
I usually do an underpainting in watercolor, that usually helps me and that could maybe solve your problem with the streaky first washes
Ooh that’s a really good idea, thanks!
You did great and the skin tone is not bad as you think you may seem. I love this painting of Jane from The Breaking Bad sucha fan :)
I don’t see a single thing wrong with it, I love it so much
