Acts of God. Church on the Rock. Centralia.

In May 1962, Centralia city council proposed cleaning up the local landfill by ordering local firemen to set the garbage on fire. Flames slowly spread to mine tunnels beneath town streets. Sinkholes appeared in people's basements, evaporating deadly smoke. Cracks appeared on the roads and buildings. The residents of Centralia were devastated.
Although one building in Centralia remained intact for some strange reason, this was a Greek Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Archbishop Stephen Sulyk ordered a land survey. The survey team discovered solid rock, not coal, lay under the church. As the words spoken by Jesus took a physical form: “You are Peter (rock), and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matt. 16:18)
