Sea otters, walruses, and whales make a variety of interesting vocalizations! From Joey the sea otter's "meeps" to beluga whale songs, animals have adapted many vocalizations to help them navigate their worlds! Come along with a marine biologist on a Deeper Dive into why they vocalize and what some of these sounds mean.
Learn more about why sea otters are a keystone species, what that means for the environment, and how their reintroduction to historic habitats could help fight the climate crisis: • How Sea Otters Help Sa...
The sea otters in this video were all rescued as young, dependent pups after being tragically orphaned and separated from their mothers. They were deemed non-releasable by various government agencies.
Rialto was discovered stranded on Rialto Beach in Olympic National Park. At the time, he was less than a month old. I was one of the lucky marine biologists tasked with nursing this sea otter back to health with 24/7 care, both at the Seattle Aquarium and eventually the Vancouver Aquarium.
Joey the Sea Otter was rescued in 2020 off the coast of Vancouver Island after his cries were heard throughout the night. It was determined that he was only a day old and that his mother had tragically passed away. I was one of the lucky marine biologists who participated in his rescue and rehabilitation. Since he was so young at the time of rescue, biologists at the Department of Fisheries Canada determined that Joey the Sea Otter lacked the skills to survive in the wild and thus deemed him non-releasable. He has thrived under human care and adapted well to his new otter family.
Quatse was found on a beach in British Columbia after becoming separated from her mother and was quickly reported to the B.C. Marine Mammal Reporting Network hotline. After her rescue, Quatse the sea otter - named after the Quatse River -- received 24 hour care and rehabilitation.
Just like Rialto and Joey, she was assessed by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada who deemed Quatse non-releasable due to her young age at stranding, and her inability to forage for live food or escape predation."
I was one of the lucky biologists who raised and cared for Quatse. This feisty little sea otter has made a full recovery and gone on to live a vibrant and healthy life under human care where she has become an ambassador for her species.

Seems like Quaste mom taught her baby a lot in their brief time together . Yes, Joey is loud and probably annoying but in his defense he did save 2020 for thousands of us,world wide. All of you did , we were anxious , bored, afraid and fearful . Joey filled our hearts and gave us hope. Now he's turning one and growing up. You ,Joey and his siblings are teaching us volumes. It's like we were asleep and we woke up, it's very exciting. So Thank you for your knowledge , patience and passion. Yes, I think and deeper dive on whale vocalizations would be great maybe include dolphins ,aren't they big talkers .

Thank you KP, you promised us meeping and that’s what we got. Joey likes everyone to know he is there. Two of my favourite old clips are Taz putting her paw over Joey’s mouth and Joey meeping as a baby when offered a toy - adorable, but I don’t have to spend hours with him each day so what I think is lovely may not be for you and the other Marine Biologists ❤️

Hi, KP Terrific content. I've watched Joey since he arrived last July and so when
you explained he will continue meeping, this made sense as to why they deemed
him 'Non Releasable' and I confess I am selfishly glad they did. Joey was arguably the best thing to come out of 2020.
As for Ferret sounds. They are related to Otters as we both know. Ferrents call
their Ferrets 'Baby Meepers' when they are tummies with teeth.
My Baby Mika Ferret was our first Baby Meeper and she meeped!
She meeped and she meeped until she grew up and then Mika Ferret learned to Hiss.
Mika Ferret was very proud of her Hiss. She would walk by some unsuspecting toy
or sleeping Wynstan Ferret and hiss.... then sort of prance on by, looking satisfied
Mika which means 'intelligent raccoon' had made her point.
She learned to prance from Roamy Ferret who was bonded to Juliet Ferret.
Juliet Ferret is our Alpha and she Honked! Juliet Ferret is now a Senior Ferret
but once she honked and dooked constantly to keep her business in line.
Keller Ferret was deaf and she had a tiny naughty little chitter when she was with Mika Ferret.
I heard Ponce Ferret (my Rosebud) bark once. In his last few minutes in my arms.
Walrus Sounds are now on my bucket list!
