- Gentoo Penguins at Petermann Island in Antarctica. They are such characters. Not afraid of humans, they are ready to examine those weird looking creatures standing in their way and even try if they could be possibly edible. I couldn't stop laughing watching this determined penguin to try figure out what I was. :-)

When flapping their wings like that, they were asking for affection. Birds’ high intelligence lends them an affinity for interspecies socialization.
@Blurt Sie penguins are birds, not seals. They appear like flippers (a necessary adaptation for their amphibious nature), but they are in fact wings. They are finely feathered and the musculoskeletal structure is that of a wing. I’m an avian rehabber, so I know a thing or two about them.
@Blurt Sie there are several species of birds that don’t fly. You say “hawk feet”, but hawks are BIRDS 😬. As I said before, they DO have wings. The configuration to look like a flipper is one of the many adaptations of water birds. All of that said, you must be a troll account or 12 years old because all of this information is readily available via books, documentaries, scholarly articles, or just a good old google search.

I love the video where the Gentoo escapes from a pod of orcas by jumping into a tourist boat with a little assist from one of the people. The Gentoo just settled down in the bottom of the boat while it hurries off leaving the orcas behind. Once safe the little guy hops up and looks around at his rescuers as if saying thanks then dives back into the water

Wow, the penguin's still very young - it's visible that it has just been through its plunge. Maybe that's why it doesn't have any fear - it doesn't know much about the whole world yet!
penguins don't have predators on land so they don't need to fear things on land
I think most penguins only have interactions with humans via animal researchers and photographers and as far as I know neither of them are even allowed to touch them to not disturb their natural habits. So maybe they see humans as some strange creatures that just goofing around and sit for hours watching without doing anything.

They change feathers so they cannot dive into cold water and they are hungry, so they try to taste if it is something for eating

I don't think it was seeing if you were edible, they use their beaks to pick things up and interact with things, like we use our hands. And I think the flapping was to attempt communication from recognising you as another animal. Penguins are smart, I would've flapped back to it.

They can be very curious. Two of us were walking back to where we were staying when a mature king penguin literally walked up to me and introduced itself in penguin speak. I shouted a phrase in Italian. It must have liked that, as It hung out with us, barely an arm's length away. No fear. I sat on the ground so I could get some picks with the penguin close to its eye level. An enlarged photo is in my office. Named it Oswaldo. An unforgettable experience.

Thank you very much, this footage is amazing, very detailed, much better than TV stations that do documentaries. I want to create a 3D animation soon with 2 penguins (1 Gentoo and 1 Adelie) and this movie helps me a lot as a reference to see exactly how they look in detail from all sides.
