I newly graduated 200 hr. Your analogy of “wild thing is the baby of side plank and wheel” truly made my day! Thanks for relating other postures for how to prep for this pose. Appreciate your generous tips!
Many times as i return to yoga (have not been a consistent practitioner), I end up with neck and shoulder issues such that my rhomboid (i think so anyway) has a sprain or strain and i end up having to quit for a while while healing. Until now, and your videos (especially this one) , did I fully understand the external rotation of the upper arm in so many of the upper body weight-bearing poses. I've spent a good deal of time yesterday watching many of your videos on RUclips and feel so grateful to you. thank you!
Thank you for the breakdown. I particularly liked how you talked about and showed the three stages of the pose - it helped me understand the alignment and technique of the pose much better.
Thanks soooo much Rachel!! Your sharings are always so much fruitful and well structured that really helps a lot in my practice and teaching!! Much appreciated ^^

I'm currently in YTT 200hr (Yoga Teacher Training). I LOVE your communication style. I have never tried Wild Thing from a side plank, only from DND, then the teacher will say, go ahead and Flip Your Dog, if you want to. BUT, I do feel very awkward getting back into DFD. I guess in the side plank method your students go back into Side Plank? Great tips on getting the feeling of scapular motion in and down in W2 and low lunge. I will have to subscribe to your channel.
Hi Yvonne, yay!!! I'm a huge fan of the plank transition rather than the DND ~ for me, makes a huge difference in my ability to stabilize. And yes - the "dismount" if you will - and return to side plank is a great opportunity to gain stability - if you don't let students move too fast :)
@@RachelScottYoga thanks! I tried the Side Plank version, but for some reason I can't do it :-( but I still can do the Flip your Dog version. When I looked at other RUclips video's I started to notice a trend, that all the teachers that could do it were tall, w/ long legs and torso's. Also my friend Maria, also tall, long legs and arms could do the side plank version. I am 4 feet, 11.5 inches tall w/ a 27 inch inseam and 14.5 inches measured from my underarm to my wrist (short arms). Also, I am a bit top heavy for my size, 36D. So, I'm wondering is it my build and physics the reason why I can't do the Side Plank transition to Wild Thing? I can also do full wheel. I think there is a difference in the way you feel Wild Thing if you do it via "Flip your Dog" then it's more of a back bend and one arm strengthener (lots of weight on that one arm). My friend Maria, tells me she feel a long side stretch when she does Wild Thing from the Side Plank way. Let me know if you have any tips/props I can use for Side Plank to Wild Thing, or if should just give up on this ;-)
@@yvonnec.salazar3560 Hi Yvonne ~ great questions! Physics and build influence how we do everything LOL - I think flipping your dog is more of a backbendy/ flexible entrance than side plank to dog. Side plank to wild thing emphasizes core strength and shoulder stability. Honestly hard to say without seeing you practice it myself? As a thought, I would try shortening your stance in side plank so you're more in a rainbow than a straight line, that will help give you more lift as you turn over. Also: use your legs like crazy once you tap your toe down - they are what lifts the pelvis. Come to class sometime - we'll try it ;)
@@RachelScottYoga Once again, THANK YOU Rachel! In full disclosure, I have bad osteoarthritis in my shoulders. I had an arthroscope surgery in my left shoulder to "fix/help" it but it actually made it worse!! So ... not going to do that again. My other shoulder and arthritis doctors said, just wait, because you will eventually need a shoulder replacements. So the "shoulder stability" part, is where I might had a disadvantage. Not sure if it's in my head because I'm afraid to make it hurt worse or hasten the time to the shoulder replacement. Uhhh! I will try some of your tips! I've already had two hip replacements from my OA, they are doing great though!! I think shoulder replacements would have more limitations because the shoulder can do sooo much and are such a complex joint.
