If he had been, many lives would have been saved including both the 5th and 12th princes. I don't know how the emperor can allow Yawan to tell her mother to confess and not consider she's saving her own skin. Ruyi points out the possibility, but the emperor just wants a scapegoat. He refuses to believe she doesn't love him and has a very low character. With his ego refusing to believe what is so obvious, he condemns his sons to her manipulations.
Wei Yanwan was framed as heartless for condemning her family to death, but they were just terrible. Ignorant and tacky, the worst stereotype imaginable. Jinzhong was right, they only ever saw Yanwan, the only working member of the family, as a money tree. This is one thing I don't blame Yanwan for. Her family would drag her down eventually, whether she made them accessories to her misdeeds or not. That's the type of family they are.
In the novel, compared to everyone else and even Ruyi who committed crazy evil deeds, Yanwan was a bit of a saint. She only did these things to survive. It doesn’t compare to novel Ruyi’s cruelty and how she was happy when Consort Yu killed the second prince.
Lady Ying is the person Ruyi needed at her side from the beginning. Meanwhile the emperor is like: welp, im sure Wei is totally innocent. No connection at all to her mother's deeds. 😂
