    Thanks so much for the review. I just bought the 70D and have been very happy with it, but several friends keep telling me about how great the 6D is. For me, the 70D fits in better with my needs of video and photos, and also into my budget. The focusing for video is amazing. You can get pull focus just by touching the screen.

    I own the 6D. It's the king of lowlight from canon. I love it since I do most of my shooting in low light settings. I think the only thing you didn't mention was the sensitivity of the autofocus in the dark, which I don't think most people worry about but makes a difference. The 6D goes to -3 EV besting even the 5Dmark 3 at -2EV (center focus point ) and the 70D center focus point is rated at -.5EV. For those looking for lowlight performance the 6D is it :)
    I enjoy your reviews! Keep them coming :)

      I have a Canon 6D. There's a lot to both love, and also hate.
      The construction is rather flimsy. But it's small and light weight. It has very few autofocus points.
      The color is very pleasing and natural. It's inexpensive for a full frame camera. The L series lenses, which are supremely good, are also frightfully expensive. I got it mostly just because it's my first full frame camera.
      But I also have a supreme quality Nikon DX format camera.

    Awesome comparison Toby! I loved your 70D videos, they made me buy it... and i couldn't be happier! Here some considerations... I used both cameras, I bought a 70D in first place because of the slightly cheaper price and because i already had some ef-s glass so i didnt want to throw that away with a 6D, but actually got a 6D borrowed from a friend. I gotta admit that the 6D has a cool image quality, the full frame body is pretty good for landscapes, but if you want my opinion the best camera is the 70D. It is faster, i missed the screen soooooo much when using the 6D, it has probably the smartest autofocus i've ever seen. The AF issue on the 70D is not that deal for me, i actually made some tests but seriously, nothing to really care about for me. The low light performance of the 6D is ofc better, but the 70D has probably the best crop sensor, noise reduction is not top notch but you have some awesome raws you can process later. The lens factor is to consider as well. I'm an indie videomaker and i love to capture stills... as a consequence i needed that versatily of the body, and all the glass i needed for a cheap price. Consclusions:
    70D: videomaking, walkaround, sports, wildlife and a better general purpose camera as well.
    6D: landscape, stills only, prepared tripod shots and portraits.

      :) a comparison i have never actually seen and that i'd love to see in a video is olympus OMD-EM1 vs 70D. i might get a mirrorless just to quickly snap some pics and it would be cool to compare so different cameras just to see where they differenciate :)

    Thanks since I am considering a 70D. I really didn't consider the 6D but very happy you compared the two, You affirmed my decision. BTW - to those who say you are comparing apples and oranges, I would say yes, it isn't a straight comparison, but the difference between crop and full sensors isn't as obvious as the difference between an apple and an orange.

    Great review! I just got my 6D today and i'm very excited to start using it. As you said i'm not really into fast shooting, sports etc. Im more into landscapes, portraits and image quality is very important to me, getting into the full frame field is something i was dreaming of long time ago. Thanks!

    Awesome review as always! One question. I'm currently using a Canon t5i, but recently I start shooting weddings and portraits so i'm thinking about upgrading it to a full frame camera like 6d. Would you recommend upgrading the camera or buy a nice lens such as 24-70,etc? I have a 50mm f1.4, and a 18-135 kit lens. Thank you!

      Eric C I do like the idea of moving up to the 6D for you. In the lower light situations that you often encounter at weddings, receptions especially they full frame low light performance of the 6D will be very welcome. Continue to use your 50mm f/1.4 and pick up the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 (fantastic lens for the money)

    Hello and thank you for all your videos. As always to the point and very enjoyable. Do you have a "best budget lens guide for canon full frame" video?
    I just ordered a 6D , moving from Sony a6000 I have only a canon 50f1.8 and an old canon 24-85 f3.5-4.5. I will have to slowly grow my Canon lens and would love to hear your suggestion. Thank you and keep those videos coming.

    Thanks for this vid Toby! These are the two cameras I'm considering (the 6D and 70D)! I had an idea for a book, and a publisher agreed to publish. Now I need to shoot the pics (my old point & shot just doesn't cut it.) So I really don't need video, GPS, WIFI...just clarity and increased pixels for printing my photos in a book. The photos are going to be things to do on vacation - meaning pics of museums, water activities, inside of shops, street scenes, landscapes, etc. And cost is very much a consideration. So, would I be satisfied with the less expensive 70D? I'm concerned about the full frame when shooting a skyline pic for instance. Also, I've found an import 6D. Much less expensive. Should I consider this? Any comment would help! Thanks!

    I owe70D. I was considering 70D and 6D to buy some time. I bought 70D for focusing, filming, articulating screen and latest technology. The size of the frame DOES NOT matter comparing those two. Anyway, it is no point in upgrading to full frame in my case as 70D covers all my demands .

I have the t3i currently and I frequently use the articulating lens, though I'm drawn to the 6D for the image quality. Which do you think I should invest in? P.S. I am looking at the 70d for birding photography because of the crop factor compared to the full frame 6d. I plan on running the 400mm 5.6 and the 1.4x extender. In your opinion would this be a good setup? Thanks.

    I have the 70d and have been wanting to do more landscape so was considering a 24 or 28mm lens (as asked in another of your videos). But now I'm thinking of getting the 6d for the full frame. My main long lenses (70-200 L and 70-300 L) and my primes can be used on 6d but would need a 24-105 kit lens too.
    Would that be a better option than investing in more lenses for my 70d?

      You have watched the more recent video too 70D vs 6D and more it really depends on what kind of video you want to shoot - easy with continual autofocus? 70D is best. Best low light performance manually focusing? 5D Mark III 7D is ok but I see no reason to buy that over 70D.

    Hi Toby,
    Very informative review. Thanks !
    I have a question for you.
    My 70D has the central focus point issue.
    I am looking for a nes lens. I want it as sharp as possible even though I got this issue and it is really a bugger for me. I am leaning toward the 40mm f/2.8 IS STV or 50mm f/1.4.
    Having this issue, which one will give me the best sharpness all open?

      I have to say the OMD Em1 is very tempting - lots of great quality in that small package. Sony a7 is also very nifty but you have to deal with the shifting sands of sony and a much smaller ecosystem. D7100 and 70D are very good but bigger and heavier with bigger lenses.

I can get my own balance between ISO, Shutterspeed adn aparteure. Now can I get that as well with 70D or is it all automatic? An important issue to mention when comparing video capability?

    HI,
    Thank you for the video, I have a question that I can not find an answer to.
    If you shoot Full HD video with both cameras, is there any difference in video quality.
    In speaking with a Canon rep, I thought he said 1920 x 1080 does not use the whole sensor on a full frame, or crop body , but closer to the crop sensor so video may be slightly better on a crop body due to capturing more data.
    Did I mis-hear or misunderstand what he said.
    Thank You,
    Frank

    Thanks, this is an excellent comparison. Currently (as of May 2015) there's a ~$400 price difference between the 6D and 70D. I don't think I'd miss the higher shutter speed of the 70D, but the articulating touch screen and better focusing system would be a loss. But my biggest concern is low light, and the 6D is very good (even compared with 5D MKII).

      Thanks. I have the 50mm 1.4 now. One frustration I face is the crop factor. I find I have trouble getting far enough away for some shots and often have to stand on something (especially when doing a headshot) to get the framing right. My 50 acts like an 85 or a 90 and my 100mm macro, more like a 160mm on a full frame. I sort of hate that!

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  9 лет назад

      Rachel Ballard Ah yes - You do need room to use the longer primes on a crop factor. My partner Christina felt the same way and was SO happy when she moved to full frame. So maybe that would be better for you considering you already have those lenses. My only initial hesitation - the 6D focus can be a little slow for active kid portraits. Support my work- buy from

      +Peter Davidson I would probably spend a little more to get a 5DM3- The 6D is a very good camera but focus points are few and focus can be slower. If shooting outside anyone moving- family portraits with little kids? the 5D is going to provide better results, also has higher flash sync speed.

    Great Video! I switched from a T4i to a 6D a few months ago. Every point Toby made is spot on IMO. I do mostly Landscape Photos along with Portraits. The 6D is outstanding in low light. My t4i was way faster in FPS and had the Cross Type Focus Points, but that hasn't hindered my Shots. I missed the Vari-Angle Screen of the T4i, and was hoping the Wi-Fi would be a bit more user friendly. As Toby mentioned, DSLR Controller is much better than EOS App. DSLR Controller is worth the $8.00 I paid for it. I bought a Cable because of connectivity issues of Wi-Fi. (Just a bit of a pain.)The Images with my Tamron SP 90mm Macro, and 24-105mm L, and "Nifty 50mm" are what I was hoping for in an upgrade to a Full Frame Sensor. I got my Camera for just under $1600.00 on Amazon (Body Only). It was not Gray Market.

    Toby - Just a comment: I'm leaning towards a 6D but heard that my Canon AF 70-200 mm lens will now not be as long as it used to with my cropped-sensor camera, it will be a true 70-200 mm. This feels like a loss to me as I do a lot of photography in stadiums or football fields where the zoom is essential. So still wondering whether to go with a 70D or a 6D. Question: How does the 7D (not 70D) compare to the 6D? Thanks in advance.

    So basically, if you're into film making, go with the 70D? If you're into photo's go with the 6D?

    • @polmacdhomhnaill3021
      @polmacdhomhnaill3021 5 лет назад

      JKPOrigins no the 6D is only good for showing pretty colours in a photo, if those pretty colours move at all you’ve missed the shot waiting for the 6D to find the focus according to video. Also if there is a focus issue with 6D you can’t adjust it as you can with the 70D in the settings. One stop is nothing in low light when you need to shoot at 15000 iso. 6D is pretty much useless over the 70D unless it’s your first camera to get pretty colours or you keep it on a tripod.

    Hello,
    I've a question though.
    I've been doing part time/freelance videography for my company for 2-3years and recently I thought maybe I can start my own freelance service to more customer instead of sticking all my project with my employer. Although I know how to take a video(Shoots and framing etc) but I am not very good with different type of camera. It means I do not know what are the differences between this camera and another camera and what this specific camera is better use for.
    Some of my friends recommended me for canon 6D while some others recommended me canon 70D and fewer recommended my Oylmpus Mark ii due to it's 5 axis. In your video, 70D is recommended for videography but I heard from a store that video shot for 70D cannot be use for 6D. And also 6D has better low light iso. So i'm abit confuse here.
    I am planning to get a camera which I can start out for my freelance Videography job such as events and product launch. Do you have any recommendations perhaps?

    I've got the rebel t4i (650d) & plan to get a full frame camera. It's between the 6d and 5d mk3. I was surprised that the 5d doesn't have wifi & GPS like the 6d as it's more expensive. Maybe that's a feature that will be on the 5d mk4(?)
    I'm soon to become a 2nd shooter in the near future.What are your thoughts on 6d vs 5d mk3

      canon 5d miii is out in the market for such a long time where people doesn't care that much yet of wifi and GPS while the 70d and 6d are just new models from canon but both of them can't beat the image quality and versatility of 5d miii.....that's why many pros still prefer 5d miii and it is expensive because it's top of the line....

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  10 лет назад +1

      I agree with everything Junjun jr. Llauderes said except 6D image quality is on par with 5D Mark III and in some cases a little better with a newer sensor. I tell you having the little bit more speed from the 5D Mark III can be very nice during key moments of weddings. Also dual card slots. But if 6D allows you to spend on some good lenses it may be worth it to save. Happy to chat about this more.

    Great review on these two. Thought I'd take you up on your offer at the end, I'm in need of some advice! Looking for a camera for around the £700-800 mark and I've quickly come to the conclusion that (being used to canon cameras already) the 5D mkii, 6D and 70D are my best options. This is where I've gotten stuck - I've heard that the 5D mkii has the best image quality potential (narrowly), but the 6D has some great updated features which I appreciate, although I haven't found a final conclusion on which focusing system is better in general, as reviews seem to only discuss the better low-light focusing of the 6D. The 70D has so many great features it's hard to not consider, even though I'd prefer a full frame, and the lower price really makes it a worthwhile comparison. I'll be doing product photography, some portraits and some filming too at work, but would like it to be good for hobby use too (landscapes etc). One of my main questions right now is whether lenses would be interchangeable between full frame canons and cropped. I wouldn't want to end up buying a 70D, spending money on some nice lenses only to have to sell them if i ever upgrade to a full frame. And if buying full frame compatible lenses would lower the image quality on a 70D, then that's just not worth it. I've heard mixed things on this, some saying they lower quality and others saying that the EF range is designed to work on both? Thanks in advance for any advice.

    • @simonwinn-smith4972
      @simonwinn-smith4972 9 лет назад

      +Harry Saleh EF-S is for crop sensors only, EF is compatible with both. I find your comments interesting as I'm also looking at those three cameras myself. I currently have a 5D mk1 but I want better low light performance and video mode.

    • @harrys7701
      @harrys7701 9 лет назад +1

      +Simon Winn-Smith I went with a 6D in the end, I have a 50mm prime f1.8 on it at the moment and low-light performance is unbelievable! I haven't used the video mode much, which makes me feel sure that I made the right decision, but from what I have tried with it, it seems perfectly good. I can fully appreciate full frame now and would not look at crop if I was to make the decision again, but then I need pro-quality photos from my camera for work and video would be mostly hobby use.. If you'll end up with a FF eventually then you'll probably only get EF lenses and not save any money with a 70d there. I found 6d and 7d mk2 bodies new on eBay for around £800 each: I weighed up FF, low light and image quality vs video & sports and went from there! AF system seems completely fine to me too, but then they'd all have been a big step up for me anyway. :)

    Option 1: Canon 70D with Canon L Series lens.
    Option 2: Canon 7D Mark ii with Canon EF lens.
    Which one gives me a better photo?

    • @merasanam
      @merasanam 10 лет назад

      Neither.... i would recommend the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8. The 70D is better than the 7D but the glass will not make such a big difference. L glass would make a difference of a full frame sensor. Between your two options there will be very little difference. L glass on crop sensor is a waste of money. The Sigma 18-35 is tack sharp and perfect for a crop sensor.

    • @discuss2130
      @discuss2130 9 лет назад +1

      merasanam I disagree with your comment that L glass would not make much difference on a crop sensor. I use myself and quality lens shines through to final images. But I do agree that on full frame the L series lenses have greatest effect.

    • @merasanam
      @merasanam 9 лет назад

      discuss21 You disagree but then you also agree.... L glass will not make a BIG difference on a crop sensor. It will be better but in any case not the same as on a full frame sensor. In fact it will make very little difference compared to the price paid for L glass (x times the cost of the body). You are better off with decent crop sensor lens (price vs results).

    • @discuss2130
      @discuss2130 9 лет назад +1

      merasanam You seem determined to disagree and spread misinformation like a troll. I am curious about your motives. I sense you are biased. Do you in fact own or have any direct experience of Canon L series lenses? Methinks not. I have run witnessed tests using various lenses on full frame and cropped sensor cameras. I discovered L series lenses deliver high quality images on both cropped and full framed cameras. The price of L glass is an issue for most people including me. Why do you say it makes very little difference and one is better off with a crop sensor lens? Better off how? Only if one is prepared to completely sacrifice image quality to save some money.
      Note: There are quite a few web reports of poor quality images and serious autofocusing issues with the Sigma 18-35 mm f1.8 lens you mentioned earlier as being tack sharp. Your mileage obviously differs ...

    • @merasanam
      @merasanam 9 лет назад

      18-35mm has focus issues when used with the viewfinder. I am aware of that. In video mode it has perfect focus since it has continuous feedback.
      For the rest, just search for the video called "Should you use Full Frame Lenses on Crop Bodies? Yes and No..." by Tony Northrup and you'll see everything real numbers measured scientifically and not by "I've read somewhere".
      And you should choose your information carefully if you are willing to accept an advice. For the rest i don't give a damn what other think.

    i had a canon 550d with a 18-55 and 50mm 1.8 lens. I had used it almost for 5 years. unfortunately my house got burgled and those guys took away my entire camera bag. Now i am researching to upgrade and am seriously considering a full frame canon. I have shortlisted canon 6D with 24-70 f4 lens. 5d mark 3 is out of my budget. I found a lot of constraints in the last 1 year or so with my 550D with respect to field of view maybe the lens could have been upgraded. do you think this will help me with landscape as well as portrait photography than investing in 70D plus a lens other thank kit lens. i also in the long term will invest in a prime L lens. For sure will insure all my camera equipment this time.

    I originally purchased the 70D based on your review some time ago. I recently purchased the 6D and I'm trying to get used to not having a touch screen and the seemingly slower tracking system. Anyhow, I was wondering would it be possible for you to maybe make another video addressing some of the 6D's shortcomings and workarounds for them? (E.g. low flash sync speed, focus points, etc). I've already purchased an ND filter to counter the shutter limitations. Any help or suggestions would be a great to help us new 6D owners get acclimated to shooting with it. Thanks for reading.

    I have a 70D and love it. It performs like a champ at air shows but now I'm thinking of adding a 6D to get the full frame benefits but I will be keeping the 70D for the faster stuff. I think It would be a great combo especially since they use the same memory cards and batteries.

    Hi everyone what do you advise me to take?
    ( canon 70d with 24-105m ) or ( canon 70d with 18-135 and 50mm 1.4 ) ?

    Thanks for the video. Very informative.
    I though the 70D was suppose to perform better at low light with much smother high ISO. I like taking music pictures or night events and this was the main reason why I was going to get one. Now im thinking of getting a 6D after all the reviews.
    Any comments ?

      70D does perform better than most other crop sensor cameras but still can't compete with the much bigger full frame sensor. If lower light is where you will mostly be taking photos 6D would be better but for low light music/concerts with more active performers you may be frustrated with the slower focus of the 6D. What you have for lenses? maybe 70D with a nice fast lens is a good compromise.

      Hey Sly5862 I have the 6D and can tell you it's a great performance in low light conditions. Especially if combined with a fast piece of glass such as the 50 mm 1.4. You can almost shoot in the dark at high ISO, it's quite impressive. But like Toby said, if you need to shoot fast moving objects and action, perhaps the 70D offers a better focusing system. Having said that I never had any problems because 99% of the times I only use the center focus point on my 6d which is a cross type, and as fast as most people need.

    The 1/180 sync limit is because it's full frame or so I was told by a Canon rep... Don't know what's up with the shutter speed limit of 1/4000 though. But as a Fashion/glam shooter the 6D quality is what I need since I'm not shooting sports and such.

    Nice review,,,,,which camera is good for a Wedding considering you would shoot 50% photos and 50% videos ?

      70D provides that amazing video autofocus and 6D provides better low light quality. If you are ok shooting video manual focus 6D. If you really want the easy focus of the 70D- go with the. . 70D :)
