    The biggest reason Ruth was able to get away with that is because he came up as a pitcher, so if he struck out and looked like an idiot, that was just to be expected. Had he come up as an outfielder, those big swings would have been coached out of him, and we might still be watching deadball era style baseball.

      Cobb said that. But I believe it's wrong. Ruth was already free swinger in Baltimore. Jack Dunn didn't change him. Nobody would.

      Everybody knows Ruth was a five tool guy who could hit for average. My point is that he was willing to strike often when there was significantly more stigma attached to striking out.

      Hitting. 342 and 714 home runs is not a failure.
