Gosh, I just wanted a good review of the mini, not them destroying two cars I really like!
Johnny makes a good point about absorbing the force of an accident in modern crumple zones, but if you notice much of the kinetic energy of the mini was transferred to the Lexus, moving it sideways and thus may have not affected the mini driver as much as he thought. You really need a modern dummy with sensors in it to tell. Haha - Sounds like a great band name “the modern dummies.”

Ed Westby Yep exactly. I got seriously annoyed when the Grand Tour destroyed multiple Jaguars to "prove they are reliable". A Mark X was jumped!

In terms of this era of classic Mini, there were a few options. Mini was the standard model (this one), Cooper S was the performance model, and Cooper didn't exist. Back then John Cooper was converting Minis so the Cooper model was much more desirable.

Ahh... the Austin/Morris/British Leyland Minis are basically identical. Apart from styling, they were mechanically the same. The Mini was made by BMC and they owned Morris and Austin so they used the Mini on both brands. Hope that helped!

I reckon personally if someone, heaven forbid, was to crash 1997-2000 classic mini, they might have been slightly better off as Rover managed to squeeze an airbag into the centre of the steering wheel at that point

Most useless crash test ever. They "estimated" the speed of the Mini, if they wanted to show impact on passengers, why didn't they use dummys and it didn't even look interesting.

Things a mini cant do:
Be comfortable
Be safe
Theres nothing comfy about a bouncy, cramped little car that never shuts up and can be eaten by potholes
Safe? Without airbags and being designed before crumple zones, and being small enough to not be seen on roadways by larger vehicles? Thats not really safe at all.
I love the original mini as much as the next fella, but comfy and safe it isnt. In fact, these are the prerequisites of being a fantastic rally car, and it is one, so its case closed im afraid :P
It's not very comfortable when hard rubber cone suspension means your head slams into the roof until you have a series of dents on the inside of the roof and you're barely able to remember your own name or what you had for dinner last night. lol
