    Played Leo's Badass II exclusively for about 10 years. Didn't realize how much it was a part of my sound. Great video!

    The badass almost sounds like youre running your bass through a compessor, much more even with gobs of sustain. Even if its only an improvement of playability, when you play better you sound better. Definitely a worthwhile investment for any bass player who wants more bang for their buck out of a gigging instrument

      It's an awesome bridge, and a classic. Definitely worth it. Thanks for watching!

    I know I'm in the minority here, but I barely hear a difference between the two bridges, and I have my doubts that you would hear any difference in a band setting (compared with bedroom playing). Does not make me want to run out and change the bridge on my Squier CV 70s P-Bass. Thanks so much for posting this, really interesting. I am just not hearing what other are hearing, haha!

    Para quien quiera sonar como Steve Harris con un Squier, es mejor que invierta en cuerdas SH77 y un pre-amp SH21, incluso con pastillas Fender Stock ya se acerca bastante a ese sonido y es más radical que un cambio de puente que en teoría, da un "poco mas de sustain".

    I’m a professional bassist, 40 years of experience. I hear very little difference. If it feels better under your fingers and you spend a lot of time on the bass it may be worth the trouble to change it. Otherwise save yourself the trouble and money.

    Did you have to adjust your string height or neck on any of these high mass bridges compared to the original? I'm thinking of putting one but i heard some times you do. I really like the Fender High Mass, I have a Fender Mexican P bass so hopefully that wouldn't need any major adjustments.

    • @OliverTobyn
      @OliverTobyn  3 года назад +4

      No adjustments on the neck, but of course you need to set up the bridge to have the right intonation and saddle height

    Ma tu personalmente hai avvertito differenze col badass? Ad esempio sotto mano

  • @rocknrollmouseuk
    @rocknrollmouseuk 4 года назад +3

    Thank you nice video showing the differences with real world examples.
    It's a pity you didn't get to keep the string heights above the pickups the same, as this exaggerates the difference. Listening to the faster (penultimate) clip, made me thing I'd like to hear the difference in attack using a pick.
    In all but the faster (penultimate) clip, I preferred the Badass II, so for me it's the big bridge (bet it'd work nicely on a fretless too?).

    • @OliverTobyn
      @OliverTobyn  4 года назад +2

      My pleasure, and thanks for watching. Keeping the exact same height it's actually kinda hard, because the Badass is way thicker than the stock bridge. I can get a nice low action with it, whereas the stock bridge goes lower than you'd actually ever need. Sure, I never tried it on a fretless, but would probably work nicely as well

    • @stevebadachmusic
      @stevebadachmusic 3 года назад +2

      i think it'd be a headache getting the strings low enough on a fretless if you're using a badass bridge! you'd probably have to sink the bridge into the body.

  • @desertsandcastles
    @desertsandcastles 4 года назад +4

    If all factors were the same except the bridge, then that is a shocking difference to me. It”s much easier to hear the difference when you were playing slower. Nice work though.

    • @OliverTobyn
      @OliverTobyn  4 года назад +1

      Thanks, yeah, everything exactly the same, even the input volume. Maybe I didn't get the action exactly the same when I switched the bridges, which is why it sounds slightly lower

  • @Daqoda

    Ive got a squier fretless vm that i upgraded to a high mass bridge and it sounded way better. It even growled more. Ive also got a squier classic vibe 70s that sounds better with the vintage bridge. Sits better in the mix and everything. I figured it was due to the different body woods but there are other variables to consider. I wonder what caused yours to sound better vs my cv 70?

  • @christosfragias592

    Great demo! It looks like the string ball ends almost make contact with the body on the Bad Ass bridge? Is that correct?

    • @OliverTobyn
      @OliverTobyn  2 года назад +1

      It's not different from a stock bridge from that point of view. They may seem close but they don't touch the body

    Ciao Oliver :)
    Sono Emidio, il ragazzo che qualche giorno fa aveva fatto la domanda nel gruppo di PBFB riguardo il Badass sul Precision; ti ringrazio davvero tanto per questo video, cade proprio a fagiolo.
    Devo dire che personalmente nonostante il cambio non mi sia dispiaciuto sul Jazz nel farlo sul P ho ancora qualche dubbio, e dopo aver visto il video devo dire che in questo caso sul timbro finale sono ancora legato al lamierino (ma magari è solo suggestione, non lo so).
    Se posso ti lascio un consiglio per i video futuri: quando suoni le corde a vuoto sarebbe interessante sentire come suona la corda singola, tenendo ferme le altre, per vedere come risuona e se c'è differenza di volume/sustain/ecc. ecc. tra le diverse corde.
    Grazie ancora, sia di questo che di aver creato e portato avanti Roba da Bassisti (sono un fan di vecchia data ;) )

    • @OliverTobyn
      @OliverTobyn  4 года назад +1

      Ciao Emidio, grazie per il commento! Diciamo che in realtà è la prima volta che lascio risuonare tutte le corde, in passato ne ho sempre fatta una alla volta, ma diciamo era mia intenzione fare un video più sbrigativo, avendo già fatto un video simile più nel dettaglio ma con il Kickass. Diciamo che sullo Squier avverto senz'altro dei bassi più tuonanti e alte più chiare. Nel video ho collegato il basso direttamente alla scheda audio e di solito queste cose si fanno molto più evidenti quando usi amplificatore, preamp e via dicendo. Ti ringrazio per il supporto, e se hai dubbi scrivi pure!

    i think they just sound different, but both good! i replaced 2 of my bridges with brass saddles and if there was a difference, it was lost on me.

    • @OliverTobyn
      @OliverTobyn  3 года назад

      I think it has more to do with the shape of the saddle. Though I tried the stainless steel and brass saddles on the Kickass bridge and there was a slight difference

      Depends. The lowest setting on the Badass is pretty unplayable, so there's that

    • @50kal44
      @50kal44 3 года назад +1

      If you need to go that low there’s probably an issue with your neck these things go plenty low, otherwise they’d be defective. Also saddle height screws are shorter so I think the difference is less than people think.
