  • On Feb. 6, 2024, Dr. Richard Brown of Sophrodyne spoke to the VFS E-VTOL Flight Test Council about his paper “Understanding the downwash/outwash characteristics of eVTOL aircraft.” Dr. Brown was a helicopter design engineer on the Rooivalk then spent 30 years in academia and developed the Vorticity Transport model that helped on V-22 VRS, brownout research and Sikorsky X-2 de-risking. The started the VFS Electric VTOL (E-VTOL) Flight Test Council in partnership with AIAA, SETP and SFTE. As part of the regular meetings, the council occasionally has a guest speaker.

Absolutely brilliant work and observation, and even better lecturing from Dr. Richard. This gathering experience is a new kind of knowledge in aerodynamic and fluid dynamics at the level of a "must know" for future VTOL and eVTOL designers. So take this very seriously, since it is just the tip of the iceberg and its further development for sure will largely have an influence on understanding VTOL concepts and ideas.
