A lot of it is also choosing the people you are around. I used to never curse at all or use a swear word. But once I was in university surrounded by non Muslims at my on campus job I slowly found my self using swear words every now and then and I would feel regret after I left thier presence. The people in my environment effected me. I cannot wait to be done with school this year in-sha-allah.. May Allah forgive us for our sins, ameen.
May allah make us more like the salaf

what if you think things but not say it, is that still bad?
star twilight asalamo alaikom I heard once that the prophete mohamed peace be open hem once sead in a sahih hadith that Allah (swt) do not punish as for what we think only for what we do it means only if we act upon it and buy the way if you had the intention to do something bad and you didn't do it you are rewarded for that just imagine how much the mercy of Allah is Alhamdolah Rabi alalamin and Allah knows best may Allah forgive as and make it easy for as amen
as per due dilligence, we should try our best to avoid bad thoughts, but there is a narration which states that bad thoughts that comes to mind is not written down as sin in ones book of deeds, as long as you dont talk/act on it.

say if u went home and u told a family member or someone else that "oh today this person did this ..., it was very silly and rude of them is that still bad??
