    So who loves timecode??? And hates when your audio is out of sync? Me too! Check out this vid and learn how a sound recordist using timecode can make your life in Final Cut Pro a whole lot easier. Who's got some Tentacle Syncs? Who's already syncing with timecode and editing in Final Cut Pro?

      but one more thing, where's the some extra audio?are those organized in keywords? for example I would use some ambience sound.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  3 года назад

      @@Unitedpersona Yup, it puts a keyword collection together of any audio that didn’t sync up via timecode with your video. Same for any video that doesn’t sync up with audio.

    I have a heavy investment in tentacle syncs and have had then sitting the drawer for a few years cause I could never figure out why i had miles of gaps between my 10 second video clips. I would spend hours blading the gaps out. The synced keyword you just mentioned saved my life, I cant believe how this makes the whole process just work so well!! You have one of the best channels on YT and you should have a million likes. I am subscribed for life and thank you to the priceless content you provided to the community

      So great to hear this, Nick! I love the Tentacle Sync hardware, and both of the sound recordists I work with on shoots here in Omaha use them and love them too. So glad the synced keyword element of Tentacle Sync Studio was a lifesaver!

    Man, this was SO helpful! I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge, as this workflow is totally new to me. I was shocked I couldn’t just sync in FCP. This really helped. New sub!

      I mean, you can sync using timecode in FCP but the issue is you have to do it one clip at a time. If you're shooting even a modest amount of takes or footage it's too unbearable of a process to undertake. For me this app allowed for batch syncing and it saved me HOURS of time.

    DO YOU READ MINDS OR WHAT??? LOL, I packed a TS for a recent trip intending to use it, but needed a timecode process via FCPX. It stayed in my bag because of this. I had no idea you could batch sync. I need to read the manuals more (or just watch your videos!!) Thanks Matthew! 👍

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  3 года назад +3

      Unfortunately you can’t batch sync using Final Cut Pro (hoping this gets added in future updates)… but you can with Tentacle Sync Studio and an XML and you should have a license for the software since you own a TS. And yes, I have been known to have telepathic powers… 🙇🏻‍♂️🔮

    Thank's to you man! You've saved my project! I've just bought a Mixpre II and BMPCC4k and never thought I'll have any issues with timecode. Try to imagine how I was surprised when couldn't find the way to compound 480 audio and media files in single clips. I think FCPX should work on it in the future, since the whole point of simplifying video editing is lost. Thank's again, cheers!

      So glad my vid and Tentacle Sync Studio were able to save the day. There’s another app in the App Store called Media Sync Tool that works with Final Cut Pro as well to sync audio/video with timecode. Thanks for watching my vid and happy editing! 🤘🏻🙌🏻

    How do you do this w syncblue w f3 zoom and prores raw timecode on ninja in fcp? Can tentical do this w my configuration of equiptment? Any direction would be awesome. Thank You

    I can't get my head around the video delay to the audio files. We use multi cams of different makes with different delays. I wish that Sync Studio would do the primary sync using TC, but then use scratch sound to adjust for video delay. Can you advise on how to handle this with the current software?

  • @wretchedproductions42
    @wretchedproductions42 Год назад +1

    Do you have tips for doing this with RED raw footage?

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  Год назад

      I always make dailies with RAW footage so I don't have to deal with managing/editing/syncing RAW footage (even though FCP can play it back without any issue). I make my dailies with Resolve so all the timecode info is preserved, and I run the 4K dailies/proxies through Tentacle Sync Studio. I've never tried it with RAW codecs.

    Will have to watch this later but great timing. Once I understood timecode and seen the tentacle trackE and SynE's I had to buy them. Their whole ecosystem makes using timecode so easy that I was able to hit the ground running with it. Looking forward to seeing your process.Cheers

    Your sound recordist is bound to have multiple Tentacle Sync boxes. Each comes with a Studio licence, so it would be simple for the soundie to donate one of the licenses to you for use on your computer.

    Well done Matthew! that keyword thing is just magical! since I just switched to Davinci Resolve, wanna know if there's a similar function to that?

    I am wondering if the Tentacle Sync solution would work for a multicam, multitrack audio shoot? Say, shooting a live band while recording the audio multitrack in a DAW? Does every single audio track have to have timecode or is it possible to sync them all with picture with just one dedicated time code track recorded to the DAW?

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  3 года назад

      That's a really good question, Les. My first thought is that if you are taking in audio signals from multiple sources WITHOUT timecode but then recording the mix of those tracks with a DAW where timecode is being striped to that NEW audio track...then yes, you should be able to use the Tentacle Sync app to sync that mixed audio track from your DAW with all of your video sources (as long as each video source has timecode). Now, I'm not sure if each camera needs to be using a Tentacle to make this super smooth, and I'm not sure if your DAW needs settings that Tentacle Sync requires, etc. etc. That part I'm not sure about.
      But what you're proposing - in theory - should work as long as Tentacle Sync Studio is seeing video and audio with timecode it understands.
      Again, for our situation we had a lav and a boom going into a field recorder with timecode and then the BMPCC 4K with timecode and it all synced up with the app no problem.

    ultimate fcpx timecode workflow!! lol I want this kind of clean project layout as well!mine is such a mess

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  3 года назад

      Yeah, they can get a little messy. It takes a lot of self-discipline for me to focus on keeping things organized in that “Assistant Editor” phase because I’m so excited to just get started editing. Glad this video showed you some stuff that might help!

    Remembering the old times synching film cameras without TC, even with out slates !!! sometimes an editor/assistant working a whole day synching 2 shoot days of a 30 seg comercial

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  3 года назад

      Sounds like a special kind of torture… If I never have to manually sync with no slate again, I’ll be a very happy editor. 🎬

    What if the audio FPS and the video FPS are different. Will the tentacle sync app still align the video and audio?

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  3 года назад

      My understanding is that the Tentacle Sync app only looks at the timecode. And I believe the only thing that can make the sync screwy when synced using timecode between audio / video is when the sample rate of the audio doesn’t mesh with the FPS of the video. As in 44.1khz can cause sync drift when synced with 24 fps footage (which is why all of my audio is 48khz).
      I don’t know enough about the engineering / technical side of this, but would assume it’s possible that 44.1khz audio synced with timecode to 24 fps footage could experience sync drift if the clips are long (like an interview) but may not be noticeable on shorter clips.
      Perhaps anybody in the comments who knows more about this could weigh in (if you’re reading this)?

    • @manmadewilderness
      @manmadewilderness 3 года назад +2

      My inclination would be no, frame rates must match between sound recorder and camera. Tentacle is pretty clear about that in their setup directions. Try it and find out.

      Thanks, Kent!

  • @manmadewilderness
    @manmadewilderness 3 года назад +1

    BTW, if you check the “open in FCPX” box on the export xml page, you can avoid the import into Final Cut. FCP opens automatically and asks what library you want to import the xml file into. All the sync files are there, along with a project file (which I delete the clips out of because the sound is detached from the picture with no way to reattach.)

    Much too complicated! What do you mean with „favorite“? It must be possible to do it much easier with tentacle sync e!!!

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  2 года назад

      It's certainly possible. I find this works best for my workflow, especially when dealing with cameras that can't receive timecode and have to stripe it in on an audio channel. Thanks for watching!

  • @attcax
    @attcax Год назад +1

    completely useless: in FCPX simply select all the clips and the video files, synchronize and you have a timeline withe all the files synchronized with audio. It would be nice if the software created single synchronized clip

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  Год назад +1

      For my workflow I need each clip synced to audio individually. Having one large synced clip that I then have to Favorite is not ideal for my documentary post work.
