Officially the best videogame of all time just because it meant you made a video

Imagine a sprinter setting a world record by a ton while the "established" athletes saying: This cannot be the new standard. They would love to be as dedicated to running as this new guy, but there all those sponsorship events to go. And running is hard.
Well that is what this sounds like.

Love this video format and it’s great to hear your critical thoughts. I’m so happy Larian is finally getting the love they deserve. It’s a shame reading those other dev’s tweets throwing shade. Especially Obsidian.
Div2 is a masterpiece but the Baldur’s Gate will expose so many more people to Larian’s work and I completely agree they should not do BG4. Now that they will have the name recognition, hopefully they can avoid being bought and instead get funding for whatever they want to do next. Oh and a Resident Evil Divinitylink would be amazing!

It's not shade, Sawyer is just saying it's not often devs get to work under the perfect conditions - look at obsidans 'masterpiece' new vegas, that was originally planned by higher ups to just be fo3 dlc, and even then had its dev times cut short. Think how great new vegas could have been under better conditions. People same to be unable to make a distinction between developers and suits.

It's absolutely pathetic how frantically these devs are trying to stamp out the success of Baldurs Gate just so they don't have to work harder to deliver us great games instead of the absolute garbage we've been getting for the past 8 years.

I think BG3 doesn’t set a new standard for RPGs, but Larian and Swen set a new standard for studios and studio heads. Never in it for raw profit or margins or company wealth and value, but for the passion and joy of making games.

Honestly after I got past the headlines and saw the original tweets from Xalavier I see where they were coming from. I just hate the fact these devs say is Larian got 'lucky' but casually ignore their misfortunes such as covid (pretty sure one of their offices literally got flooded too during development).
It also feels like what all these devs actually want to complain about is money hungry publishers that drain all the creativity from their workers.
For fucks sake one of these tweets compared BG3s scope to Rockstar's usual scope! Larian got the rights to make a sequel for a game that was originally made by Bioware... freaking Bioware! Larian only deserve praise.

I couldn't be happier that the devs made such a big deal out of this. If they'd just stay silent, nothing would have happened. They just shot themselves in the foot by trying to convince the player-base of their nonsense.

Hot take: this is a better BG game than the original two by virtue of gameplay alone (I can throw some stones at the story, but there we get more subjective). How and why RTWP was the dominant mode for the industry and was not criticised, but praised, considering how the origin of the game is actually turn based rather than RTWP will always be beyond me. How the fact that BG3 is not RTWP is used as criticism is even more beyond me.

Maybe having six plus years be the standard for production for video games, where you don’t crunch your employees and give them time off specifically to play the game you made should be the norm? Oh and without micro transactions, a half-finished game, and people at the top not shoveling all the profits into their mouth and actually wanting to produce art?

Can't really say anything about Act 3 as I'm still in Act 1 60 hours deep into the game.. but apart from that I agree with pretty much everything you're saying in this video.
Well and I dont like the randomness... I personally would've enjoyed a Divinty 3 more then this from a gameplay perspective, but the DnD universe gave them such an amazing world and setting that already has so much detail and damn they used every single little detail in some way! its absoloutely amazing how much is in this game.
The writing is the same exact kind of amazing we got in DoS 2 as well so yeah and the biggest problem I have with it's size is that I'd really like to see all the characters story unfold.
Nice to have you back making vids as well.

Am I just dumb or none of these criticisms about rpg standards make sense? Its not really that much of a work if you're not rushing to publish games every 6 month. I am an amateur writer so I have little bit of experience in writing. If you have overall picture in your head its not really hard to write alternate possibilities or extensive story, it just takes time. Game mechanics already there so you don't really have to add anything extra except maybe new maps. Even then you don't need to have 100 hours gameplay in your game. Dishonored 1 did the same thing in 12 hour playtime.
I feel like producers need to take some notes here. Just pay your people well, let talented people do their thing and stop pumping the same thing under different brand. Game will be good and you'll get your money regardless.

Baldur's Gate is my biggest gaming disappointment. All the talk got me so excited. I didn't like it. At all. Couldn't finish it. Was I playing the same game as everyone else? Turn-based CRPGs are my single favourite genre. BG3 ain't it.

    "hot take"
hah, ill give you a hot take
this games narrative is a solid 0/10, the writing is so terrible im convinced the writers havent read a single book in their life, I was fully expecting the characters to make baseball references by the end of this utterly forgettable blandfest in which most dialogues make you physically recoil from cringe (also, its funny you said"polished turd" because thats exactly what came to mind when looking for a comparison)
I hated the writing in divinity, but it was at least its own wacky thing contained in the world of their own making
they had the right idea with the strategic-only divinity spinoff before they axed it to work on bg3, storytelling is not their thing
games have been so bad lately desperate gamers will proclaim anything mediocre a masterpiece
    pathetic

    • @Mr.Narmer
      @Mr.Narmer Год назад +1

I've only finished act 1 so I'll withhold judgement for now, but I have to agree that a lot of the dialogue is pretty cringe. The companions are pretty lame for the most part and everyone is so thirsty that you almost have to be careful to avoid romancing the NPCs on accident in some cases. I'm playing a multiplayer game with friends so we skip a lot of the dialogue and we're having a great time. I'll probably do a little more RP on my solo campaign. Even if the writing is all bad, which I've only seen a small portion so I won't claim that, it's still a really well made top down turn-based fantasy RPG with a rich IP. Let yourself enjoy the gameplay then, that's most RPGs. Or don't, idrc
