The lever is only on "0" when you're doing a straight stitch. All other stitches from 1 to 20 are for non- straight stitches other than "0" regardless whether the knob green or red. (red is back stitches, green - no back stitches).
Also, you only run the thread through the bobbin finger when doing buttonholes.
