  • This video shows how to remove the ignition switch, from my 1973 Citroen SM project car. I take the switch apart and clean the electrical contacts, and then reassemble and install. It's a pain in the a$$ !!

Neil, I have been lamenting having to pull the ignition switch from my 1975 Maserati Merak. Same as ignition, as the SM, as I am sure you know. I had been putting this off for about 4 months, because I was going to take the approach of drilling through the steering column. That was something that did not excite me. This morning I saw your RUclips video, spent about an hour this afternoon following your directions, and the lock is out. I really appreciate your instruction, and your detailed approach. Thanks for making my life easier.

I'm going to make you day. To remove the switch first remove the locking pin. Then rotate the key to the ' on' position then rotate the key to the first stage of starting. At this point the locking pin will retract enough to remove the switch. Easy when you know.

ok so what is the locking pin you are referring to? i researched a bunch of forums and asked several SM guys and they all said you had to drill and push down on the locking pin to get it completely flush with the barrel before you can slide it out.

@@neil1 The locking pin is under the rivet you mentioned, it is a shear bolt installed as an anti tamper/theft device. When that bolt is installed it shears off. The locking bar can be lowered by gently putting the key into the start position. At the point of overcoming the tension you can now push the switch out. My switch was severely damaged by electrical heat. I rebuilt it with making new terminals and fitting new springs etc. I have also fitted a second starter relay to take the load off and protect the switch.
